The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition PC performance thread

Shit, no point me even trying on my 3gb 970m then is there. :(
Control Panel and force Skyrim to use the dedicated.

960m and runs at 30+. Probably what you'd expect on consoles without an FPS lock on.
How do I check (or change) which GPU the game is running on? If it's running on the integrated CPU graphics card, that would explain my performance issues.
There should be an activity monitor you can activate... somewhere. But you can also go into control panel and see which the software automatically selected, and if it auto selected Integrated that'd say everything.

Haven't got it yet, been in two minds because it's a laptop. But generally yeah I set pretty much everything to dedicated. Thanks.

Picked up an Elder Scrolls Anthology key today for cheap, downloading the game now - will see how it runs on a 2gb 960m - this card can run vanilla skyrim at 1080p 30 locked...

gave away the keys to the kingdom.
my time in the OP was short lived...lol

Nvidia 970 and a 8320, solid 60 across the board with everything on ultra high except for shadows, which are on high.

Holy shit, I forgot what the original menu even looked like. SkyUI where are you?!?

Runs at 30fps part of the time on my i5 4690k/290X machine and 60 the rest. Weird.
Wish it would stop dropping down so low, changing LOD/Shadows/Godrays settings did next to nothing to help.

Any ideas as to what I can do to fix this? It happens when looking in certain directions but only when in fairly specific areas (but there are a lot).
Like it would drop low when looking toward Whiterun and its field from the river that runs behind it, but if I took only a few steps forward, it went back up.

Well, after playing some more time, it definitely looks better than vanilla, especially in forest areas/high foliage density areas but once you go in towns/more "sterile" places, you can see all the flaws and how dated the engine is.

Regarding the multi-threading, it's just as I expected from Fallout 4, not the best, but places like Dragon's Reach's stairs are now smooth when you look at the city, none of my cores where saturated (47% at max, 35ish on the others) and the framerate was locked at 60.

Now to test the stability of the game by loading Cheese Wheels in Whiterun!

Rock solid 60 FPS here, everything maxed including AA at 2560x1440. Borderless window.

That's not weird, double buffered Vsync cuts your framerate in half even if your GPU has actually only dropped a single frame. Try borderless window mode, that should be triple buffered.

The Fallout 4 SLI bits seem to work well (as probably expected). I get around the same usage on both cores of my 690 (roughly 60 - 85% depending on what's on screen). I'm getting some stutter as I move around but that's likely because of testing max settings with the card's paltry 2GB VRAM, otherwise it's a smooth 60fps.

For some reason it cuts my fps in half. But i didnt even have a profile for the game by default, is that just me?

I made my own profile and copied some of the settings from the Fallout 4 one. Are you using borderless windowed mode? That caused massive stutter for me and a much lower framerate. Switching to fullscreen fixed it.

Got it working after rebooting my PC.

Ran it maxed settings at 1080p.

i7 970 hexacore 3.2Ghz
Nvidia 960 GTX 2GB

I get about 40-45fps in the opening ride with all the god rays, it dips to 35-ish for a few moments when the opening village is in view.

Once in the village 52fps on average.

During the dragon attack around mid 50s hits 60 fps frequently, and solid 60fps when inside.

Yep, started with fullscreen. I changing dx1x to killing floor bits, then changed dx10 # of gpus to 4 and predefined sli mode to AFR.

i7 2600k, 16gb ram & a GTX 970. Everything on max at 1080p. Runs a solid 60fps. Only seen it drop to 55fps during the Alduin opening but it's been steady. Just got to the first town.

The game is a little but prettier and crisper, but I don't see a huge difference tbh. Unless I'm misremembering the original.

Mostly getting around 70-100 FPS at 1440p, but I get occasional stutter when roaming around the open world.

Is this normal? I'm new to PC.

I think so, I have about the same setup and it runs really solid.

If you use vsync it should keep it at a smooth 60fps

Locking the fps to 60, disabling gsync, and maximum performance in nvidia control panel resolved my stutter. Im on a gtx 1080.

Ah. I thought it might be some kind of v-sync related issue, but I didn't know it was turned on by default. But it does still do the same in borderless windowed.

Disabled V-sync. Definitely was the issue, now I just have to cap it to 60fps.

Dunno if you're using G-Sync, but doing the following fixed my stuttering.
Found this G-Sync fix:

Works for me :) Phew. This was my only real issue. Capped to 72 fps via RTSS and working perfectly so far.

Also be sure to lock to 60fps. Running over it will cause physics problems.

That's Skyrim. I'm getting something around an average 50/45 outside and like 130 inside. Physics are all fucked up, taking damage walking over bones.

Edit: I'm running FastSync btw, you gsync guys should try that with this and see if you're still getting low framerates

Ultrawide is still slightly broken. While it works compared to vanilla Skyrim, there are a few menus (talking with someone + item menu) that are zoomed in too far. Hope modders can fix those. SkyUI should definitely fix the item menu as a side effect of what it does tho.

That being said, the mere fact that it works at all in Ultrawide and doesn't require Flawless Widescreen like before is a godsend.

Mine did that too in a cave.

I was like WTF? No enemies around, just walking and the blood splatters showed up on screen and bones bounced off of the wall.

That happens in the original. I died once due to that. Still wasn't as bad as Fallout 4's completely out of nowhere completely die. I didn't even hit on something.

Whoa, I didn't bother with this until now because I'm not even using a gsync monitor... but this shot my framerate up from around 30 fps to 130+ fps without a cap.

It disables the refresh rate lock (the game's built-in version of v-sync), that's why. Be sure to cap the game to 60 fps if you haven't already; the physics system can go bonkers otherwise.

No hbao+? Buh...

Seeing as the remasters were mainly created with the AMD backed consoles in mind, I can see why it didn't include an Nvidia effect. I am glad they added an SSAO solution though. I believe the original didn't have one at all.

Titan X (2015)

running max settings at 1440p. Just finished tutorial. Averaging 70-90 fps with gsync

BUT the game occasionally drops down to 8 fps for 3-5 seconds. Is it cuz of loading? Anyone else having this issue?

Cool thanks for finding this., I'll try this tomorrow. On the other side of things how did this pass qa? It like they said it's the pc version so f*** it.

I have played for an hour, getting solid 60fps so far at 1080p/Ultra.

Tips and tricks:
Skip the intro video: Open Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition\Skyrim.ini and add SIntroSequence=1 to the General section. (Credit to jony_m.)
Just a small edit/tip.
You can use "SIntroSequence=" instead of 1, and it'll achieve the same results.

Seeing as fallout 4 got it in a later update, maybe the se will as well. I hope anyways.

Found a crashing fix from right here on these forums.

The game was crashing about every 15 mins for me. I checked my windows event logs and it showed that xaudio2_7.dll was causing syrim.exe to crash.

Did some googling and found that this has plagued many people on Windows 10 over many games. I then also found a post from neogaf detailing how to fix it.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1148961

Basically what you need to do is disable the TabletInputService (Touch Keyboard and Handwriting Panel Service)

Hope this helps someone!

Ah, good to know. I can't imagine anyone fussing an additional character, though. ;)

Agreed. I just wanted to mention it before it got out of hand and people began to believe that putting 1 did anything at all except point to an non-existent file.

Vanilla, Gsync on with the fixes from main page and ipresentinterval=0 I pull 84 to 120 fps in Helgen on one 1080 at 3440x1440.

2nd 1080 shows no activity however.

And yes I know the game is built for 60fps but I want to see the raw performance difference with same settings from 2011 Skyrim to SE.

Anybody else getting a weird type of shimmering filter on the ground when they walk around? Reminds me of some No Man's Sky shit.

This runs well for me on a 4790k and 980 (like it should honestly). It looks better than vanilla but worse than modded skyrim. The volumetric lighting looks nice at the right time of day.

The DOF however looks low quality and it certainly doesn't look like the bokeh found in ENB or other games which I think looks amazing. I honestly think it's just their bog standard Gaussian blur type dof implementation that they had in the original Skyrim too.

The upgraded water textures are also so-so compared to the modded ones. I do feel like the overall image quality is less crisp than vanilla Skyrim because of the TXAA vs MSAA thing, but it kind of makes it look more modern I guess. Movement also tends to make the scene blurrier than it is while standing still. I'm assuming this is down to their implementation of TXAA because I've seen similar things in other games that use TXAA.

Dense shrubbery looks moderately better but it's still a far cry from modded. I was also dissapointed to see that the default value for uGrids hasn't been bumped up so long vistas still end up giving off that barren hills type vibe.

All that being said, I think I would like to replay this version if the texture mods (because who boy there's some ugly shit going on) and SkyUI get ported over.
