And then the LORD David Bowie saith to his Son, Jonny Depp: 'Go, and spread my image amongst the cosmos. For every living thing is in anguish and only the LIGHT shall give them reprieve.'
This is the capper to this bad dream that has been the worst year of my life.

We wake up with a Trump presidency and as much as most just want to take the easy way out and say "fuck you/fuck x voter/fuck x demographic", political engagement starts NOW to seriously look at the democratic party and why Hillary tanked.

I agree, but I also think e.g. downplaying the influence of sexism (e.g. on public image), as some are already doing, is not helpful either.

Congratz america, you just became a second Russia. Actually, at least Putin knows how to behave himself publicly. You fucked yourself and you fucked a good part of the rest of the world and I can only hope that "he tells it like it is" was worth it all. Well fucking done.

America Fuck Yeah!
Democracy ladies and gentlemen!
Everything is going to be all right.
Or maybe another fine american tradition will save us all...killing presidents.

Immorality aside, his death would damage the US democratic apparatus, there's be a huge surge in support for his legacy, his administration would carry on with Pence as president and an even bigger mandate but with a weaker country.

If Zack Snyder really wanted to actually be edgy he'd end Justice League with the team getting together at last, taking one look at America as Lex Luthor or whatever comes to enact their evil plan, and saying "fuck it."

Majority of us voted against him.

Not that that fucking matters to the electoral college.

It certainly isn't, but at this point it becomes white noise for serious looks at rebuilding the democratic party and getting the candidate right for 4 years time. Another campaign led on simply smearing/going after the opponent candidate won't work, no matter how much it may be deserved.

Wait. What?

How exactly does American voting work then?

Each state is assigned a certain number of seats (for a total of 538). The voters in each state determine who wins those seats. The first to get to 270 seats wins the election. So it's possible to get more votes overall but still lose the election.

Really? Education is not important? The more you know...
Bush 2 had two Ivy League degrees....

Did that help?

Also the Constitutional requirements for President are old and were written before college was attainable and necessary for the voting population.

I don't even think it needs to be worded like that, not to mention saying it that way caused many people to go into uproar.

We wake up with a Trump presidency and as much as most just want to take the easy way out and say "fuck you/fuck x voter/fuck x demographic", political engagement starts NOW to seriously look at the democratic party and why Hillary tanked.

It's obvious why she tanked. people want real change (whatever that may mean).

Much like Brexit, I think many people saw this as a chance to give the system a shake more than anything else. Years of dissatisfaction will do that to people, and I understand that desire very much.

My fiancé and I were in bed this morning drinking scotch at 3am in utter shock. Democracy was a mistake. This county and the world are in for a lot of pain.

It is not smearing people, it is necessary for an honest analysis. This is a candidate that just won despite being incredibly sexist and racist, sweeping that under the rug means that the Democrats might very well again have no proper answer when the next election comes. You have to properly assess the loss and take the appropriate steps. Taking the high ground, as many like to do, is not necessarily the right approach. Why do you think the Republicans have been so incredibly successful, despite their actual track record?

I went to bed early, so for a few blissful minutes I didn't know the outcome this morning.

It'll be interesting to see what a Trump presidency really is. Is he really just going to be a figurehead of a Pence Presidency? Does he really intend to govern?

In the short term for our country, I don't think it's going to be that bad. I don't think the more outlandish stuff in his platform will be actualized. And who knows what he actually believes in. The biggest consequences of his presidency will be long term. We're going to be facing a really conservative Supreme Court. We're looking at four years of climate change inaction.

I think the worst thing about his win is what it says about our nation. The racism, sexism, xenophobia. Our acceptance of hucksterism.

I genuinely feel for those people thinking he's going to help them feel financial secure. They're going to waiting for economic relief that's never going to happen. Now we're going to be forced to swallow another four years of trickle down economics.

If gay marriage got to the supreme court again and was overturned what would happen to existing same sex marriages?

The gay marriage ruling went through with Scalia as a judge. It's not at a risk even if Trump replaces Scalia with a mega conservative, which honestly wouldn't be much different than Scalia was.

We lost the dream of a liberal majority court for now, but as it stands the balance of power for these landmark decisions won't shift regardless of who fills Scalia 's seat.

If another one opens up all bets are off, but for now the progress made is safe.

So the GOP holds the House, Senate, POTUS and soon the SCOTUS.

We will be set back by a generation or more.

They want to overturn Roe v Wade. They want to punish a woman for having an abortion. Pence wanted (wants?) to make it a law that miscarriages require a funeral.

The people least likely to receive any benefit from Trump's "policies" are the ones who put him in office. They expect him to turn back the clock on time and bring jobs back to the US. I suppose he can make that happen by turning the US into China. Who is ready for the stagnation of innovation, for an accelerated greenhouse effect?

I wonder what people like Elon Musk must be thinking today.

Which I'll say as I did for Brexit having a protest vote at government when it's something this serious is going for the nuclear route. No pun intended there either as Trump nuke hyperbole is outrageous.

People need to do better at reshaping liberal parties rather than protest voting at the system. I mean the American political system is a disgusting monster, but protest voting for a egotistical billionaire? Great way to get at the "system...".

However I will admit Bernie would have appealed better to these votes, but sadly large portions of America seem to totally want to reject socialism.

The democratic party did not go out and vote for Trump so not sure why you think this isn't a demographic problem.

Either democratic voters switched sides, to Trump or 3rd party, or not enough of them gave a shit to go out and vote. Hillary was killed in the vote, 278 to 218.

This guy's approval rating when he leaves office will be in the single digits. Mark it down.

Not sure.

Republican policies like tax cuts and deregulation may have great benefits in the short term (YAY more money! Yay less taxes! Yay higher profits!), but it takes several years before some of their worst long term effects take place.

Can someone answer me this, if the popular vote isn't the final word, how can you even qualify this as a democracy? Who are the overseers of the Electoral College?

It happens in the UK all the time, Scotland votes for the SNP, rUK votes Conservative and we get a Conservative government because of the size of England. Hence why me and many others want Scottish independence. England votes Brexit, Scotland votes remain, Scotland has to Brexit.

America is kind of like the UK in that more weight is given to some states due to their size.

What your describing is contradictory ideas. The UK has a first past the post system which means if the majority of your country is concentrated in one area it doesn't matter it has the same weight as someone's county in Scotland with a fraction of the population. It's how the conservatives with only roughgly 30% of the vote gained a parliament majority. They one key areas they needed to win even if by the smallest of margins. The Referendum was entirely different it is proportional and thus every vote mattered equal thus the popular vote wins either. it's in this scenario Scotland was worse of.

First past the post benefits Scotland far, far more than a proportional democracy does within the union as it has a large land mass in comparison to it's small population.
