Get your SSDs ready, PS4 Pro supports SATA3

Say wha-?! Care to explain?
Pretty sure Sony either moved up the date or just doesn't care. My local targets and Walmart have the pros but their computers say not to release until 11/9, which Best Buy also shows.

I'm amazed we don't have any tests yet.

It's weird, you'd think it'd be a fairly easy click winner - once DF did their initial tests, time a few games - slap in a SSD, re-try those games and give an 'preliminary results' type write up.

Would take a few hours tops and (as I said) win loads of clicks.

Oh, man, if this becomes true for my local Best Buy I am so there. I preordered my Pro from BB for delivery, though. :'(

SSD? Naah, I would prefer more of those zoomed-in comparison screenshots that show 2 different angles ( ͡ ° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I know. It's a bit mind boggling.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

They probably will be spreading the content over the next few days. A few videos each day.

Can't wait for my PS4Pro to arrive tomorrow so it won't be used until my 2TB Firecuda arrives which i (pre)ordered yesterday...

a few hours tops lol ok sure

Seems reasonable. Testing methodology:

Select a handful of games that don't have Pro patches, are preferably disc based to speed up install, and have reasonable loading times (e.g. Bloodborne, Witcher 3, GTA V, etc.).

Decide upon an easily reproducible loading event for each game.

Test them on a regular PS4, record results.

Put an SSHD in PS4, record results.

Put an SSD in PS4, record results.

Test them on a stock PS4 Pro, record results.

Put an SSHD in PS4 Pro, record results.

Put an SSD in PS4 Pro, record results.

This of course assumes that they haven't already done easily reproducible testing on a stock PS4.

The HDD swaps can be done in a few minutes, the longest part of the process is waiting for the disc to be copied to the HDD each time.

Yeah, assuming common sense is used and a 'priliminary result' is what's aimed for why not?

They have the machine and have installed some games - then whilst doing initital tests they also include times for loading those games. So the first part is already done. Next step is to plan a simple 3/4 tests including those times already taken and delete as much of the unwanted data as possible from HDD - ok so starting point has cost next to no time.

Next, backup to external SSD, swap the Pro HDD - revert data back - run tests - post results. A few hours tops. Then repeat with a SSHD. Ceratinly could have been done by now.

Edit - actually endlessflood process was quicker, I was just thinking how I would do it so I didn't lose data.

DF are always meticulous in the way they go about their testing (it's why they're respected as much, right?) so I would imagine it's going to take longer than a lot of us expect. They also said they only have a single unit (although I would think that will change soon, if it hasn't already).

With that said, I wish they'd bloody hurry up!

I don't understand what's taking so long. Most sites that have a Pro have already done HDD testing previously. Why are they not just re-testing on those same games?

I agree. Popping in an SSHD is a cinch, as you can swap the original and SSHD at will to compare. Either the news is bad, or there's an embargo still.

I would cut them some slack. Maybe they don't have an SSHD or SSD ready to go wherever the PS4 Pro is. Or they're waiting on a Firecuda to arrive. Or they're completely preoccupied with the shitload of games that come out this time of year. Testing is tedious work...

Do we really need 20 different sites showing us how Skyrim gras looks on PS4 Pro? At least one of them could be smart enough to work on actual new information

DF have already stated they only have the one Pro console which they are sharing between the various team members, using if for video capture and other tests.

Testing several drives with multiple games will take a very long time, format the new drive, install the OS onto each drive tested, install the games on each drive, patch each game to the same version etc., that's all before doing any actual speed tests.

This was posted about 30 minutes ago?

How to cut PS4 Pro load times by half.

https://youtu.be/LsVZji072AA

I can't watch youtube at work, what it say?

It's comparing a few game load times with a Pro on stock 1TB vs 240 GB SSD.

Differences come out as follows:

4 seconds faster in Bloodborne
2 seconds faster in Hitman
3 seconds faster in inFamous
7 seconds faster in RoTR

These improvements aren't big enough to shell out for an expensive SSD in my opinion. I would love someone to compare these stock Pro times with OG PS4 too though, just to see if there is any improvements out of the box.

Of the 4 games they tested, the only one that got close to 50% was Tomb Raider at 48%.

Bloodborne managed 23.8% faster (14.32s v 18.8s)
Hitman managed 20.3% faster (5.64s v 7.08s)
Infamous manged 25.1% faster (9.56s v 12.76s)
ROTTR managed 48.5% faster (6.88s v 13.36s)

As someone who had a SSD in my PS4 at launch and then removed it for other uses since the speed difference wasn't enough, I'm not going to bother this time unless more (new) games start to show more results like ROTTR.

an SSHD would once again be the best compromise.

I'm sure DF will have a more exhaustive batch of tests though.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!

Witcher 3 should be the reference standard for testing. No other PS4 game demands load improvements more than that game.

That test shows that there's no improvement with SATA 3 over the standard PS4 with an SSD installed. It's still bottlenecked.

So while you do get faster load times, it's not a huge difference.
