Get your SSDs ready, PS4 Pro supports SATA3

Thanks everyone! Yeah I was pretty sure that I ordered the 2.5 and the model itself on the box said STL2000LM015 but when I finally got it it said 3.5. Cause of alarm haha!

As for the Firecuda 2TB one. I was going to go for that but when I was checking it out last time there wasn't a date about when they would receive more. It just said "currently unavailable". So I went with this one. Plus I have no experience with SSHDs even after looking at them.

EDIT: Still showing out of stock with no availability date.

I was able to snag one on Amazon about an hour before you posted the edit. I signed up for alerts but they never seem to be sent fast enough. Just randomly checked then and it was there.

Can someone please help me know if this is a 2.5 or a 3.5? When I ordered it from Amazon it said 2.5 but the cardboard box says 3.5.

Sorry I'm still kinda new to all this.
That looks fine, don't worry. Referring to 2.5 and 3.5 can be a little misleading if you don't know what the numbers actually relate to as it makes sound like it's only an inch longer in length whereas you could actually fit two 2.5 drive on a 3.5 drive if you rotated the 2.5 drives to 90 degrees.

A 3.5 hdd would be massive in comparison to a 2.5 drive. :)

There's definitely no doubt that there are gains, it's just a question of whether you find the gains worth the price. I didn't go the Evo route as many people here did. I cheaped out and got a Mushkin Reactor SSD with about 860 GB on it. It was a bit cheaper, especially by Canadian standards, but popping it in the Pro has made a noticeable difference. Games like Robinson: The Journey load up pretty fast for VR gaming, and even doing a complete shut down (which is recommended to "clear the cache" and ensure motion tracking is good for VR games) and powering up feels like it takes about as long as bringing my original PS4 out of rest mode does.

So Digital Foundry still hasn't tested this out yet?
They surely have more than 1 PS4 Pro now no?

I feel that if DF are going to test they are at least going to try to do a handful of different sizes, makes, and models of SSD. With SSD prices still sky high that adds up quickly into the 1000s

When they wanted to do a SLI test with graphics cards it took them awhile to source what was needed to do the test, and that was a cheaper prospect. I can see the same been an issue here, so it might be a while.

That's true.

So do we have any benchmarks with the firecuda?
I did the same test that was done with FFXV JD's new game initial loading screen. I can't find the video but iirc the results were:

Stock HDD - 60 sec
SSD - 16~ sec

I got 34-36 seconds with the Firecuda.

I truly think any SSD will give you a great advantage - the Evo difference will be minimal because (again IMO) Pro can't take full advantage of SATAIII so yeah, I nearly picked up a cheap SSD but by time I had funds it had sold out

summary: Pro SSD is 1-3 secs faster :/ SATA3 = pfff.system bottleneck as suggested prior

il pass. ordered the 2TB baracuda from seagate

Odd seen better results from gaffers

That is why I felt testing one model and size was a bit limiting. There should not be a huge different between SSD's but they should have opted to test ones with different read speeds (and or sizes) incase some interesting information popped up.

The limited testing in this video suggest they were expecting a result before they tested, and as a result chose not to dig any further. They are usually very good a going that bit further to offer solid proof.

You can clearly see with the PC comparison that the PS4/Pro is the limiting factor, not the SSD.
They could have gone with a 850 Pro or whatever and it would heve been the same.

In this thread alone I feel people have been reporting better results. Obviously not PC level results, but better than what DF have just showcased.

There is a discrepancy somewhere, which is why I wanted the DF test not to feel so limited.

Thier video does not answer all the questions people have had. Even if more testing gives the same results, the fact that more testing was done would satiate people. DF are usually better at covering all bases IMO.

Their sample size is pretty useless to me. We need at least a dozen games with PS4 Vs PS4 Pro and 5400/7200 RPM HDDs, 5400/7200 RPM SSDHs (think there's only one or two at 7200), and SSDs in both.

There's just not nearly enough info to figure out what is really the best bang for your buck when it comes to what to purchase. I currently have a 7200 RPM 1TB HGST HDD and there's just not any data that tells me if I should be willing to spend more money or not.

I'd definitely be willing to spend money on a SSD if it showed a decent improvement over my current drive in at least a few games (if there was a good enough sale), but there's no data.

I think at this point it's pretty obvious that the cost to value ratio, it's not worth buying an SSD specifically to use in a Pro.

2TB SSHD is your best best if you're looking to expand storage.

Otherwise, you're probably fine with the stock drive.

No need to add another $100+ onto your Pro purchase price.

For all you guys that have the Firecuda- is there any of that random beeping problem that some of the old 2tb seagates had on the original ps4?

I really want 2tb for storage, but Im the type of person that any beeping would drive me insane- thanks!

Haven't heard anything yet...

Had that happen to me all the time with the old 2TB. That's why I bought the Barracuda to see if it happens there. I really hope not.

I give up on the Firecuda. I don't really NEED a SSHD...

Thanks for you opinion. For me it's worth it...I'd rather 'juggle' with 1tb and cut my load times by ~30%.

Do I need to deactivate the pro as primary before the upgrade? I shoud have the 2tb firecuda by Friday.

No, you don't. I swapped in an SSD on my Pro, but kept my original PS4 as the primary. After updating the firmware, I just deactivated the original as my primary and activated it on the new Pro, and there were no problems.

Obviously. But not everyone is concerned with the best cost to value.

One thing they didn't do was test games with Pro Patched, which from the sound of it might be opening up the pipe a little bit. Which would make sense if there is an expectation of higher fidelity assets and textures.

I was expecting more testing as well, but I do realize how much a PITA it is to do so, especially with one unit.

Welp...the 2tb FireCuda changed from "currently unavailable" to "In stock, but may require an extra 1-2 days to process" so I impulse purchased it for my Pro haha...Amazon gives me an estimated delivery date of November 23rd for anyone interested

Just ordered and it gives me a delivery date of Nov. 22nd (I have Prime).

Okay okay fine! I bought the Firecuda 2TB! Coming on Tuesday!

But is it worth it??? I'm not sure at all. I have no experience with SSHDs! Don't know if I should keep this!

Why is it better than the Barracuda which I JUST got today???

What I've gathered (I could be wrong here):

If you play a single game/use the same apps a lot you should see a difference since the flash portion of the drive has "smart" system that determines which programs you use the most and puts that data into the flash storage.

If you play a variety of games a lot you might not see much difference in performance.

I just snagged one too. Got tired of waiting for them to get back in stock at Amazon Japan.
Now, I have to back up and restore everything for a second time.
Doh!
