So how is JBs doing?
I would have thought they took a fair chunk of the VG dollar.

They do okay, they don't deep discount like Big W/Target though. They're pretty smart about looking at the market from a long term perspective. They've branched out a fair bit too over the last few years rather than just focus on entertainment media.

Thanks for the insight. It's insane how many eb stores can be maintained with their generally absurd prices. Target has been pretty good for a while with pricing, but I can totally understand how K-mart, Target and Big W struggle in the market. They just never really managed to establish an image of being game suppliers (and an often lacking range doesn't help).

Other retailers sounds enticing. My wallet weeps.

It continues to boggle my mind why anyone ever shops at EB and how its even a going concern given the pricing. I don't think I've ever bought anything there. I've at best window shopped. Especially given any location EB is at there's a department store like Target et all that's cheaper.

Of course thinking about it, I was mostly a PC gamer first so local game shopping opportunities did dry up a long time ago, and I've been digital only for probably a decade on PC and 3-4 years on console.

But growing up I remember I was mostly shopping at department stores (like Grace Bros, K-Mart) and sometimes places like Dick Smith. That and mail order places.

Which I frankly find bizarre. They need a name change or passing all the non entertainment business onto Good Guys.

Speaking of which, what kind of splash do we think Amazon's reported expansion into Australia will have? They'll surely be doing tech I imagine, yes?

I suppose it depends on how they get the stuff into the country. If they are still dealing with the same handful of importer/distributors it might not be a huge amount but at least it will piss off Gerry Harvey!

Pissing off Gerry Harvey should be everyone's goal.

EB price match basically any retail store so complaining about them selling at RRP doesn't make much sense. They in general have 10 times more stock than anywhere else and they also have a no questions asked 7 day return policy. It's actually the best place to buy games here really, not sure why people complain about them.

Many EB Stores are drongos when it comes to their price matching policy: they won't price match unless the competitor is in the same shopping centre and has confirmed they have stock. For example, EB Games at Birkinhead Point are in a shopping centre where they have no competitors selling video games, and thus refuse to price match anyone. EB Games at Leichhardt did the same thing. I've had EB Games at Miranda call a competitor to confirm stock levels near Christmas time, and when the competitor didn't answer they refused to price match because they couldn't confirm stock levels.

After all of these time wasting experiences I stopped shopping at EB Games altogether. Similar experiences are probably why people complain about them.

Oh man ill be picking up titanfall 2 and watch dogs 2 for those prices. Will jb price match if target sells out? I dont really like dealing with eb workers.

EB probably won't price match that. Apparently they don't price match clearance sale prices.

Eb games and JB's are right next door to each other where I usually go. Last time I tried the guy couldn't get through on the phone so put a jumper on to cover up his shirt and walked next door.

EB Games - We'll match any advertised price*

I'm still waiting for his public response to it all. Guess that will have to wait till it opens and I guess ACA has him on whinging.

Given the supposed wait so they can do groceries I am kind of curious to see how say Aldi responds given they are the retailer chasing lowest prices.

I imagine it will kill my packaged goods type grocery shopping elsewhere, especially if they launch Prime here.

I'd much rather support the shop that is offering the best deal.

No idea, depends on how big a splash they want really. They could basically take over any markets they want due to how cutthroat and hyper effective they can be. End result will be Amazon basically BEING the retail market.

I assume they'll ease into it, get a feel for the regulatory situation then push hard once they're sure the authorities are happy with how they are operating.

What are their workforce practices that are considered particularly shady? I've never really paid much attention to them.

The strapping GPS units to workers to make sure they are working hard enough, taking the most efficient routes not going to the bathroom too often is straight out of 1984.

New Zealand has recently banned Zero-Hour contracts, another in a long list of achievements that should embarrass the Australian Government.

I must be lucky with my EB, I ask them to price match all the time and literally have never been refused. They don't even bother checking half the time, though it is in a shopping centre that has all of Target, Big W and JB.

I am sure it will have an impact on retail, but will it really be that great? Online purchases are still dwarfed by retail purchasing here, at least that's what a recent report led me to believe. Maybe this will finally put the squeeze on distributors to drop price gouging in this country, interesting times ahead.

They are going to have retail locations, including fresh food.

You think Amazon and you think electronics, games, books, DVD/Bluray since that what they ship to Australia. Once you have access to everything, you tend to buy a lot from them. Over the last few weeks from Amazon (using Prime), I had a 30 litre bag of Cat litter delivered to my work as well as a pack of three microwaveable soup cups, pet toothpaste, dishonoured 2, a ps4 pro, an ice scraper for my car, a one litre bottle of maple syrup and an inkjet printer. And I watched Grand Tour.

So they are cunts, but they are useful cunts.

Oh, didn't realise they will also have retail outlets, that changes things, at least with retail outlets though that means local jobs.

For me personally, I already buy a lot of my material items through Amazon, I guess that will increase somewhat. If something is 10-20% more at local retail I will usually just pay the extra, but when it hits 30%+ it's hard to resist importing.

edit: reading more into it, it appears (a lot of it speculative) that Amazon certainly has a had a negative effect on retail in the US, and that is a place where retail has a lot of similar pricing to Amazon, but potentially not the same level of service and certainly not convenience. The effect here could really be much more dramatic, especially if they open up a retail outlet and start conditioning people to order from them online. What would an Amazon retail outlet look like? Would it just be 100 touch screen terminals with their webpage :). They would probably be looking at a potential sale of BigW as a site of interest.

Thanks for the well-wishes all, was a perfect day where everything happened to work out even better than planned.

Now just have to get this "new house" thing sorted.

So I'll probably still be fairly quiet around here for the time being, at least until that's all done too.
