KS8000 settings for gaming at 4k/HDR

I like DTS, seems to give my speakers a deeper punch.

Are quick google supports dts as well. All these years I never bothered to look it up.

Dies anyone know what to do with the brightness and hdr sliders in forza 3

It wants me to turn brightness so the box labeled 1 is barely visible. Which makes no sense. And hdr brightness. Wtf?

Thanks for the replies.

I am actually using a One S with this TV rather than the Pro this topic was intended for.

I have UHD colour switched on and the console plugged into the correct input.

Will post a video tomorrow anyway to get further opinions.

Have you tried calibrating your TV with the Xbox One S calibration settings? It helps a lot.

There was a discussion on this. Warm2 is the standard.

If you flip between the two it absolutely looks yellow. There is no doubt. That's just the way it's supposed to look.

U tried.with warm1 and certain things didn't look right so went right back to warm2

My Xbox One is set to warm1 as per its calibration suggestions.

Yeah I see in the xbox calibration it says warm1. Interesting. I'll take another look. I don't trust that calibration so I don't use it.

I have no idea if consensus is its good or not tho

It actually gave me results almost similar to other professional calibrations I've used so it seems good enough. Try it.

I just did. Everything was similar except color tint. Few notches off but if that's what the xbox wants that's what I'll give it.

I think I'll leave the ps4 at my disc settings.

I will give warm1 another shot as well. Won't hurt me.

Now back to my search on how to adjust forza 3 hdr settings.

Nice.

I think someone here had issues with forza looking dark set the hdr brightness to max and said it looked fabulous. I don't have it yet though so I can't be sure.

Yeah the hdr was unimpressive in forza. I believe someone said the settings are borked even in this thread but I couldn't find it so I might just have to make a thread and ask.

Til than I'm gunna okay some uncharted with warm1 and see if I like it more

I know the whites look whiter extra but I just wonder if that yellow hue is supposed to be there to look more realistic. We will see.

Yep I think I'm back on the warm1 train. It just does look more realistic I think

After carefully looking at different pictures and games, I decided "Native" is definitely not the way to go and went back to "Auto".

Native defiintely pops more but it's oversaturating the colors and you are losing a lot of detail and color grades. It's very similar to Dynamic Contrast just with color instead.

I'm pretty happy overall. I'm still a "Standard" purist but I might be convinced to go to "Warm 1". I admit it looks more natural but it still bugs me.

There was an 8 page thread a month back on color tone for games.

Everyone was every different setting. Now you guys make me who back and go through it again.

Truth is I have no idea what setting is correct and I'm trying to figure it out myself.

I loved that movie.

I'm going to be as patient as I can and try and wait for some good 4k movie deals.

Really want one tho to see how good it looks. Are all 4k movies hdr as well?

besides someone saying they played tf2 has anyone played any fps like destiny and cod on this tv. How is the input lag on those games online?

The input lag on this tv is great. Most hdr tv's have bad input lag in hdr mode but this one is awesome.

I think I figured out HDR for forza. Leave the brightness slider default and crank the hdr slider to max

Seems right anyways. Hdr actually looks good now on it.

Also sticking to warm1. It just looks better than either standard or warm2 imo. And if that's what the xbox calibration says than that backs it up even more.

I dont think so. It explicitly says on the cover if its HDR ready.

Oh yea... I forgot about the HDR slider.

Not necessarily. The vast, vast majority do support HDR (I can't think of one that doesn't have it) but not all list it on the cover.

If you're looking for movies just to show off how good your TV can look, I'd recommend starting with The Revenant, Lucy, X-Men Apocalypse, Pacific Rim and The Shallows.

I'm a little confused as to what I should be setting HDMI black levels to, both on my PC and the 55KS8000. Auto on the TV and Full on the computer seems to make everything like oversaturated, and crushes things a bit.

...and for an even more noobish question, not quite related to the topic - watching HDR video from my PC on this TV, is that possible?

Auto is defaulting to low which is limited. You want normal. Then turn your dynamic contrast to off.

Yes, warm 2 on the set itself when using apps looks normal and natural. Warm 1 is definitely the choice for consoles

Agreed. But now I have to remember to switch it when I play movies on a console.

Wish I could go back to being ignorant lol

Had a wierd experience. Trying to run my WOW disc on ps4pro to calibrate the sound would not play in dd or dts.

I just gave up but really don't understand why.

So hopefully the audio delay is good already.

I always ran optical straight from system and now that I'm going through the tv optical just made me nervous.

I've been shopping for a 4k set recently. It would primarily be used with my pc but I've been told not to go with 4k tv's for pcgaming. Does anyone have either first hand experience with this tv+pcgaming or have an opinion on using a 4k tv with a pc?

I apologize for the super off-topic comment btw, I just haven't been able to find any solid advice regarding this issue I'm having

Super sorry if this has been answered but has anyone tried comparing HDR between the standard PS4 and the PS4 Pro? I'm not sure if it's just wonky settings but HDR really doesn't look great on my OG PS4 (Shadow Warrior 2 looks great on PC).

I just want to get one variable out of the way.

I use this tv as a pc monitor every day and it's great. Supports 1440p too.

Ok, here's a video that shows the issue I'm having with this TV. Normal or specific to my set?

Unfortunately YT's compression has minimalised the issue when I move the phone towards the TV screen at the beginning but you can see it as clear as day when I fire up Forza.

If anyone could comment or compare it would be much appreciated.

Why do you have backlight at maximum?

Simbo

Because Forza is an HDR title and maximum backlight + contrast is recommended for HDR material.

Outside of game mode the TV will automatically max out the backlight and contrast when it recognises an HDR source.

What are your Xbox One's video settings?

Also, have you tried calibrating using the Xbox One's calibration?

My output settings are 4K resolution, 10 bit colour and Standard black level. I have tried all of the various settings and get the same every time.

Someone on another forum loaded up Forza and got exactly the same. Could just be a limitation of this model? A tad disappointing if so....especially considering this is one of their premium UHD sets.

Yup! This is exactly why I was asking, saw this link posted on avs forums and was wondering if the ks8000 was even able to display it at all.

Doesn't seem like much at the moment, but was hoping to at least find out is we are capable of even getting this to work through the TV youtube app.

Note that the KS8000 YouTube app hasn't been updated to play HDR.

Ahhh, just saw your reply after posting this.

This was the confirmation I needed, thank you :)

Guess we'll just have to wait a bit longer then.

This is weird. I have the OG Xbox One on 10 bit and PC RGB and no issues (also tried standard and still good). Can you try turning off HDR see if you still get banding? Maybe it's an HDR issue?

I have the KS9500 but from what I've read they're similar to KS8000.

EDIT: Ahh wait. When I do what you did and have the settings screen minimized like that I do see banding, but the moment I click and go full screen it's gone. Hmm...

I've always had banding with the Forza intro. I assumed it was just a problem with the game itself. Other people not seeing the banding? Is it fixable on the KS8000? I'd like to know how to fix it!

Anyone routing audio to a non-HDR receiver using the ARC feature? I feel like my surround sound is lacking some punch since I started doing that.

I am, but in not really an audiophile so I can't tell too much. I actually need to check my amp to see what is picking up.

Presumably it's better to output PCM out of the PS4 through ARC and then let the receiver deal with it, rather than output DTS or Dolby Digital from the PS4?

I'm not really sure what settings I should be playing with. When the PS4 was hooked up to the receiver the display on it used to say 'PCM'. Now that it's hooked up through ARC the receiver display says 'DTS Music' or something like that while playing PS4. I'm not an audiophile either so I'm not sure what I'm doing.

I get exactly the same. The banding appears when it's minimised. Do you not get that effect when loading up Forza? Assuming you have it of course. It's worst when the Microsoft / Turn 10 splash screen appears.

I don't think it is fixable.

Now that I've highlighted the issue there are loads of others who have the same.

I believe it is due to the poor bitrate / codec being used.

So isn't the backlight supposed to automatically adjust when watching hdr on netflix? Started marco polo season 3 and it doesn't. So i don't think hdr is working with it.
