That's a lot of removed silence.

Just checked out Magnus Archives and really liked it. Having never listened to any horror podcasts I really liked the atmosphere they built. Need to check out some more horror ones.

I see no option for remove silence on my app? Android.

I just want to let you guys know the latest Reply All episode is amazing and you should all listen to it.

Also, I've really been enjoying the first few episodes of Heavyweight have been pretty good.

It's hard to hate on Gimlet for cancelling Mystery Show when they consistently output such good content.

I'm just now getting into podcasts due to the Beastcast. Now I've got like 20 podcasts on my Overcast app and I'm completely overwhelmed. How do I listen to all this shit? Almost all of them are two-three hours long. I have dailies like NPR I listen to while I do art but I'm completely overwhelmed. Combined with the amount of tv I'm trying to catch up on and fucking hell. HELP.

What podcasts are you listening to that are 2-3 hours long? Most I listen to are 15 to 45 minutes, with some lasting an hour or longer, and most are weekly, every other week, or monthly

On my podcast list for this week:

Marc Maron - 1 hr 41 minutes
Waypoint - 1hr
Stuff you missed in history class (what are the best episodes of this?) - 50 minutes
Combat Jack - 1 hr 25 minutes
Filmcast - 1 hr 20 minutes

Stuff like Tfe Read are two hours but it weekly.

NPR daily stuff combined is like three hours I think?

Breaking it down maybe I'm just overwhelmed by the sheer amount more than anything? Yet I want more. Listening to bomb cast as I play DQ Builders demo and it's almost 3 hours. The giant bomb vr stream is six hours.

HELP.

Listened to a few episodes of the Stuff You Should Know podcast. Still undecided on it, honestly.

I appreciate the varied subject matter and research that goes into the show, but I just can't get over the fact that the hosts sound like sleepy robots speaking in run-on sentences that just kind of trail off. I'll probably get used to them if I listen to a few more.

It can be tough. To be fair, I listen to podcasts almost all day, so I go through like 10-12 hours of series a day.

Really, it comes down to what you listen to. You just have to be more selective and listen for longer on a daily basis if you want to fit more in.

That takes away from music listening time. :(

I feel I have to recommend the hilarious anecdotal/talkie The Filip and Fredrik Podcast.
ff-podcast-600x600.jpg
It's two guys from Sweden that has a history and love relationship with American pop culture and each episode the talk anecdotes from their many travels to the US and other places around the world.
I would suggest starting with the episode You Had To Be There on which they tell the story of when they first arrived in New York and then in LA, coming to terms with the "Americana" way of life.

I gave the episode a download. Looking forward to hearing about what Swedes think about NYC since I'm always fascinated by how people see stuff that we native New Yorkers take for granted or don't notice. Their most recent episode on Japan sounds hilarious.

I'll make a recommendation:

I just discovered A Phone Call With Paul yesterday by way of Junot Díaz sharing the most recent episode that he was in on Facebook. Basically the premise is that host Paul has given a phone call to all kinds of famous writers ranging from Neil Gaiman to Jhumpa Lahiri in the middle of whatever it is that they're doing right that moment.

Paul is a human literary book who cites lines from books and famous writers left and right. It's worth a check if you're into fiction books or what have you. Will give a listen to past episodes so I subscribed. I would recommend starting with the Díaz episode then going from there.

A few impressions on some podcasts that I checked out by way of this thread:

Invisibilia-Fantastic series. I've listened to a few episodes and I'm in love with it. The clothes one was pretty fascinating and eye opening as I felt bad for the guy who continues wearing his sunglasses all day and even to sleep.

Israel Story-I listened to the bus episode so far and I like the fact that the host is self-aware of the This American Life comparisons since remarkably similar. There's was even a Torey Malatia shout out in the end of the episode. It's pretty damn solid stuff all around. Will listen to more episodes.

All my favorite true crime podcasts have gone the way going with commercials that interrupt the story. All the same fucking ads too.

It is kind of funny how the entire medium has like the same 5-10 sponsors

My Brother My Brother And Me, and Hello From The Magic Tavern have had unusual sponsors, a kinky online store and Cards Against Humanity respectively

True crime garage is shilling for Bras and psychics

My favorites this batch

PsychTech/Headshots - Same hosts for both, with backgrounds in psychology, biomedical engineering, and game design. Discuss relevant topics and Black Mirror in the former, current game news through a psychology lens in the latter
History om Fire - Takes an episode or two to get used to the accent, but it's great history tales.
Twilight Histories - History (and alt histories) told through a "You are here" perspective
Checkpoints - Great interviews with developers about games that had impacts on their lives
Backseat Rider - NBC reporter turned Lyft driver interviews his various passengers about a different theme each episode

When you've heard it one podcast, you've heard them all. Risk! (the storytelling show) has kinky online stores as sponsors. I like the fact that Bill Burr ribs on sponsors or completely eviscerates them sometimes. Does anyone even use psychic services these days?

Will check out Backseat Rider since it sounds fascinating. I currently have 41 podcasts in my rotation but only listen to half of them. I might have to do some house cleaning and delete past episodes.

Got a favour to ask of you guys. A friend wants to get into podcasts, but we've got nowhere near the same tastes.

Anyone in here listen/can recommend any podcasts that's fall under philosophy or self help?

Anyone with some good political podcasts to recommend? I don't listen to many but I kinda want to now that, well, you know.

And it's been a while since I've thrown out a recommendation, so here's one I've enjoyed listening to so far. The Nickelodeon Animation Podcast, a podcast featuring interviews with some of the great minds behind classic and current Nickelodeon animated series like Hey Arnold, Rugrats, Doug, etc. and also some interviews with voice actors as well. I'd recommend it to anyone that has nostalgia for those old 90s Nick shows or just anyone that's interested in how animated cable television series were produced back then.

"Political" is a pretty broad term. You want news, analysis, gossip? The "Current Events" section of the OP is a good place to start.

Broadly, I'd recommend Slate's Political Gabfest; On The Media; maybe Vox's The Weeds (I only just added that one, not sure yet if I like it or not); The Axe Files is a really good interview show usually with political operators but often with politicians, too; FiveThirtyEight Elections is good (gets into political reporting in addition to just the polling/modeling talk) but it's probably ending in a few weeks; Keepin' It 1600 on The Ringer's network is an unabashedly Democrat pod (run by former Obama staffers) that can get a little inside the beltway / gossipy but the hosts are good; Slate's Whistlestop is maybe my favorite pod right now, but that's political / campaign history.

Pretty much all of those are left-leaning or at least strongly anti-Trump. But it should give you a start. Personally I get most of my right-leaning media in text form but I'd love to see some worthy right-inflected podcasts recommended here if anybody has any?

Also shout out to poor Jacob Weisberg who I guess is on the hook to produce several hundred more episodes of the Trumpcast.

Thanks, yeah I realize now that I was being a bit broad, but news and analysis were pretty much what I was looking for. All of those sound good to me. I'll check some of them out for sure.

And yeah I agree, it would be nice if anyone knows of any respectable right-leaning podcasts out there to recommend too.

You can listen to podcasts at 1.5x to 2x speed if you want to fit even more stuff in.

1.5x works fine to me, anything more sounds like gibberish to me.

Talking Simpsons is the podcast I'm enjoying the most these days. Part of it is because they are getting into peak simpsons. The last episode was on Marge vs. The Monorail. Days like this make me wish I had cable so I could watch the Simpsons marathon. I should also check out laser time's other podcasts at some point.

Flipping through this thread this week and I saw someone mention Four Finger Discount, a different Simpsons podcast. I tried it and its pretty good but I prefer Talking Simpsons. Crazy that they're lined up since their last episode was also Marge vs. The Monorail

Anyone looks for some great laughs should check out the Cave Comedy Radio podcasts.

The Last Podcast on The Left is great and goes into conspiracy theories/ serial killers/paranormal, pretty dark humor and is the funniest podcast I've listened to.

Stumbled upon 2 fantastic podcasts recently and couldn't help but bring them to the attention of Podcast Gaf:
Supercontext Podcast - Is probably one of the best media casts I've listened to. It's basically intense dissection of different books, comics, films, TV and music beyond just whether or not it's good or bad or the feelings it stirs but how it was made by our culture and feeds back into that culture, What some of the choices in the media mean, where they come from and the circumstances under which it was created. They've covered stuff from The Dark Knight, to Hannibal to SPECTRE and the comic series East of West. Of course the hosts are 2 40+ white guys but thankfully they are and always attempt to be self-aware, progressive and bring differing insight to what they discuss because some of the things you think they'd like being pop culture nerds are actually things they take alot of issues with. In fact, that self-awareness and progressiveness led them to recommend the other podcast:

Politically Re-Active: Despite it's start this summer, I'm still shocked I never knew this existed. Hosted by W. Kamau Bell and Hari Kondabolu, 2 of my favorite current minority comics discussing politics with guests like the likes of Roanne Gay, Jill Stein, Rachel Maddow and Shaun King.

Side note is that as a budding writer, Supercontext has been insanely insightful in grasping ideas like theme, characterization, & tone more so than alot of podcasts just about the craft since it breaks it down using alot of media I'm familiar with

Supercontext sounds fascinating. I listen too many riffing on bad movie and general TV episode analysis podcasts; this sounds like a nice palette cleanser. Thanks for the heads-up

So I finally updated my iOS recently after putting it off for ages, and holy shit the default Podcasts app is now utter garbage. It's basically unusable.

Any suggestions for actually good podcast apps on iOS? Preferably one that allows me to carry over my downloaded episodes so I can keep the now-archived Hardcore History stuff I have?

I use Pocket Casts. It's my favorite of the apps that I've tried. It gets updated often with improvements and features

I use downcast. It's a paid app but worth the few dollars. There's an option to import media, but I've never tried it.

I use Pocket Casts, as well. Tried for a long time to just use the default, but man, it hurt. I found out after the fact I could export the OPML file containing all my subs (using iTunes, since it isn't within the app on your phone), email it then click the attachment and open it in a new podcasts app.
