Yakuza 6 is coming to the west

Making the PS4 an essential purchase when I finally jump into this generation of video games. Glad to see Yakuza is being kept alive. Now I'll need to find a way to play Yakuza 5 when I finally return to the states.

I always feel like it's 2004 when I read stuff like this.

Perhaps its because some of us prefer to own the products we purchase and not simply rent them. But hey, to each their own. Fact is, if they are willing to put in the effort to provide a physical release (or allow Limited Run Games to do it for them), I will happily spend my hard earned money on it day one on release. If they don't, I'll wait until it drops or, like Yakuza 5, becomes a PS Plus title.

as someone who owns a huge physical collection & champions the format: you're cutting your nose to spite your face, and this logic can very well be the end of some of your favorite niche series down the road.

Y5 was late as fuck, but it was only full price if you didn't pre-order. the cost of localization was prohibitive, sega had already undergone a huge shift in the years prior (focusing on more viable franchises), and like Shenmue 3, this literally only happened because sony's building the list project undertook efforts to bring beloved fan franchises back, while obviously minimizing the risks.

obviously i'm ecstatic to get Y0 as a physical disc (with bonuses even!), but if the series had stayed digi-only in the states, am i really prepared to let it die? we'd not be here without that support, just like Phoenix Wright & other fanbases. there's tons of people who'd kill for a non-physical shot at Phantasty Star Online 2.0 & such.

Dead Souls put really low #'s on the boards, and the series itself looked dead out here. i guarantee your hard earned money wouldn't go nearly as far with most other series, it's not about effort, man: it's about either being a fan and supporting what we can get - and in this case, being rewarded with future entries, and physical releases too - or just watching another series stay in japan and saying you're a fan, but only if they're willing to risk further loss to appease you. i'll never understand that.

I hope your favorite franchises die because of comments like this.

Really, you might as well say "I refuse to support developers".

Hopefully there are physical releases of 6 and Kiwami. I refuse to pay full price for digital.

Buddy, there was no choice with Yakuza 5. It was digital or nothing. I'll almost always take physical if I can, but they were never going to do that at the end of the PS3 console life. Reducing around 25% of the cost due to retail (and possibly higher including distribution) would have been a huge reason for Sega to finally bring the game over.

If people purchased the original yakuza games on PS2 the PS3 releases might not have been delayed as much, but we can all make it right by preordering 0, kiwami and 6.

And I'd imagine that if we have a physical version of 0, we'll get them for kiwami and 6.

Yah I have a preorder for 0 and will do the same for Kiwami and 6 when/if available. As for Yakuza 5, there are plenty of other avenues to cut cost, such as allowing a third party to take on the cost of distribution. Limited Run Games has shown an interest for nearly two years. But I agree, things should be supported, and i will do so an appropriate price for digital.

If they can't put in the effort, even in a limited run, then I say let it die. I certainly won't lose any sleep over it. There are plenty of other publishers/franchises that will happily cater to my needs and will be rewarded for it.

If small developers like Krillbite and Campo Santo can find a way to release physical copies to those who want them, then surely a studio the size of SEGA can as well. Anyways, enough with that, lets continue talking about Yakuza.

We are talking about Yakuza. You know that series with digital releases and late localizations that only gets localized because devoted fans keep buying the games digitally?

That Yakuza?

If I'm not mistaken Yakuza 5 was $40 on release and even lower ($34) if you had it pre-ordered. I honestly think that was a good price for a game as big and as content packed as Yakuza 5.

we're spreading the gospel as best we can, man! the number grows everyday...i told john hardin, we know it's a niche series but there's a lot of room for growth here, i honestly think an action beat-em-up RPG in the vein of River City Ransom, SOR etc has way more appeal here in the west than it's caught so far, hoping to see more love!

well, we got 0's announcement first, and with a physical too! so yeah, while i feel pretty confident 5 only happened with it did with sony's help, all the magic that happened today is painting a great picture for the series out here going forward...we just really have to make sure to capitalize on it!

Numbers are growing because of your great Yakuza series starter guide! And everybody else on GAF is getting in on supporting a series that was basically on life support for Yakuza 3 and Yakuza 5....

I think it can definitely be a pre-eminent series in the west but the marketing for the game has to change. I think Dynasty Warriors finds quite a lot of its success in - Look at all those cool moves I can do, I'm such a badass, and with the latest Yakuza 6 gameplay trailer, I'm seeing some of this awesomeness with the crowd clearing moves. Then there was also a lot of that wackiness in that trailer too like fighting a shark, webcam chat, which I do think could sell to western audiences looking for a fun game.

One thing that does hold it back a bit from mass success is that its a title with no apologies for being Japanese and all things Japanese culture and that's always going to be tough in today's market with so many western games. Sega need to do a better job at reaching out to those people who are a bit hesitant and remind them at the heart of it is a fun game.

Yakuza 6 is looking like the most improved game of the series yet. I'm hyped.

woah can't believe we're getting 3 localized Yakuza games in 2 years haha

I'll get them all for sure! :D

yes, it was $34 for pre-order, the game was also on plus during the past summer.

So what % of the Yakuza games are going to be on PS4 in total?

What notable games are missing?

Just the spin-off Ishin is missing.

0, Kiwami (remake of 1) and 6 are all on the PS4 and getting translated into English. Ishin is on the PS4 but only in Japan. On the PS2 you have Yakuza 2, and on the PS3 you have 3, 4 and 5 (along with side stories Dead Souls and the Japan only Kenzan). Then on the PSP you have two more side stories (Black Panther 1 and 2). Its quite possible 2 gets remade like Kiwami onto the PS4 to bring it in line with the rest of the series, I don't think its unrealistic to believe that Sega might announce this as a Japanese release next year (with a hopeful translation following in late 2018/19).
That just leaves 3-5 in the main series. Team Yakuza have mentioned in the past that they'd like to remake all the games in the series (whatever that exactly entails) and release them on the PS4. So by the end of this gen we might be lucky enough to get the entire main series on one console.

Cool. Having the whole series on PS4 would be amazing.

I've only played some of 3. It was awesome. I want to jump back in but might leave it a while.

I am so happy right now! More Yakuza! I've started playing 4 a while back and it's an awesome journey so far.
I cannot wait for next year.

As someone who's never played any Yakuza games before this makes me very happy. So let's see....

Yakuza 0: Jan 2017
Yakuza Kiwami (1): Summer 2017
Yakuza 6: 2018-ish

That spreads it out nicely.

Joke?

So does Kiwami feel like 4 or 5 or like the original?

I mean, did they work on gameplay and convenience stuff, or is it just a straight up graphical update?

I still cant believe that we're getting to play 2 Yakuza Games in the same year and know that the next one is coming too. Man, what a great time for videogames. Couldn't be more happy.

Kiwami is basically Yakuza 0's engine (combat, gameplay, graphics, controls and all) with the story from the first game. All the fighting styles and heat moves from 0 are in and many of the mini games from 0 also return (bar the awesome arcade stuff, players get screwed on that front).

So its far, far more than just a graphical upgrade like other remasters, this is a straight up remake of the original game and is better for it (no more lock on issues in combat, far more heat moves to use in battles, no more static camera angles).

As a big Yakuza fan, I love what they're doing. I just hope they don't forget about the other games in the #buildingthelist hashtag, like, you know, Legend of Dragoon? :D I bet it has thousands of requests by now.

with three games coming in a calendar year im curious if they're internal market research indicate a greater demand for the games

anecdotally it would appear there's more interest in the series now than there's ever been in the west

Is the plot in Yakuza games actually good? Or is it more about the combat and zany mini games?

its amounts to a crime soap opera

you see plot devices and macguffins repeated game to game

This is amazing! Day One for both. And Zero obviously.

For anybody on the fence, please buy these damn games! They're like mixing Streets of Rage 2 with action-RPG mechanics with a hugely detailed world, cool gang underworld stories filled with manly melodrama, and the most amazing, fleshed-out minigames. There's honestly nothing else like them.

Can't wait to help Kiryu run the world's best cat cafe.
