In the end you were completely right. I just didn't have my RAM seated properly (both sticks!). I completely disassembled my PC, reapplied thermal paste to the CPU, tested my PSU with a paperclip, and was testing a bare bones rig on a cardboard box, and it was just the stupid RAM not being pushed in all the way.
Fractal design define S if you want a tower form factor, or node 605 if you want an HTPC form factor.
Am I allowed to cross post an item for sale in here? If not, let me know and I'll remove this..

I've had this for maybe a year or so now, and it has worked flawlessly. I only played League of Legends my PC and never even overclocked my CPU. I doubt the fan has so much as turned on. I have all of the cables and accessories but not the original box. I do have a box from my new PSU though so it can be packaged securely.

If $300 is your budget I'd say get an AMD 480 or GTX 1060 if you'd rather go Nvidia.

Would be fine, though they would all run at the slightly slower timings of the newer sticks.
Just finished my first build ever. Took about 4 hours on my own with no breaks. I didn't encounter any major issues beyond a loose cable here and there. I'm quite pleased with myself for being able to manage this so well. I guess binge watching build videos on YouTube paid off. I just tried running DOOM at max settings, and it was glorious. Now I'm just trying to see what all I can do that I couldn't before. 144 Hz is pretty freaky at first.

What games do you like to play? As long as you're willing to lower settings I think the 1070 would still be pretty potent at 3440x1440. I use mine at 2560x1440 and I'm very satisfied.
I'm not sure if you'll run into issues with ultrawide compatibility in games though, so that's something to consider.
Not sure what to do with my Seagate 4TB HDD.
Put it in my build, copied all my files to it. The next day it disappeared from My Computer and showed up as failed on the diagnostics. So I formatted it and created a new volume and it's working again.
Is that considered fixing it or should I not risk it and just get a replacement?

So, I almost died about 4 days ago, had emergency gall bladder surgery, had grandpas funeral 2 days later, doctors still trying to figure out a problem with my heart... I am pretty doped up atm. I apologize if this question seems really obvious but I am trying to stress as little as possible.
I was able to grab one of the crucial 750GB SSD's on black Friday. I want to use it as a dedicated modding hard drive for use only with games that I heavily mod. Atm that means Skyrim.
So, my question is. How do I install this thing? Literally just like I did with my Samsung evo 500GB SSD when I built my rig? Just plug and go? Anything else I need to know?
EDIT: Am I going to have to delete and reinstall all of my Skyrim stuff onto the new drive? I assumed that would be the easiest right?

You'll need to go in to Disk Management to initialize it, but yeah, that's pretty much it. Then when you install something on Steam you can point it towards that drive.

I'm ordering parts for my build mentioned below, but I am having second thoughts about my PSU. Will 550W be suffucient, even when overclocking? PCPartpicker says the entire system draws 310W and when overclocked it should be around 400W, but I would like to be sure.
Is the 550W version OK for my build or should I go for the 650W? What are the advantages of going with a higher wattage PSU?

Hi. It's really, really big. I didn't expect it to be so big as it sits over the ram slots in the motherboard. But it's performance is excellent and keeps the CPU in the low 20's. Truth be told I can't hear it. The only thing I can hear from my PC are the 2 fans at the top. The cooler itself as far as I can tell is near silent.
I play pretty much everything. What hit do you think it would take, using lower settings? That would really suck to not be able to run at the very high points.
Also, what sort of issues with the Ultrawide issues? The thread on UW monitors is pretty dead so getting the info is slow/stagnant.

Check out the review, they have tested an OBSCENE number of games and the RX480 comes out on top in a vast majority of them.
Install some small game on the new SSD
Move the Skyrim files to the new steam folder that was created.

If it's installed on Steam, no you don't have to. Just use steam mover to get it to the new folder/drive.
I am flirting with building a PC when I return home next spring. I planned on using Haz's list but I noticed it has been a while since he has updated it. Is there anything that would be significantly different in the great value section when I construct my PC in early 2017? Like major price differences and better parts per value now compared to July?

Zen will be out for desktop by then so you will likely be getting double the bang for your buck CPU-wise. Also expect Vega and the Pascal refresh to hit H1 2017 so GFlops/$ will also go up by around 10-20%. I would wait unless there is something you desperately want to play before spring.
Excellent to hear about Zen. I don't expect to build my PC until March at the earliest. Always good to find ways to save some extra $$$. Anything left over might be invested into a PS4 Pro or a Switch.

i5 6600K with an RX480/1060 and 8-16gb DDR4 2400-3000MHZ would do the trick. But for only $700 he's really going to be struggling to get something that's going to be worth it for video editing.

Thanks! I actually misspoke when I said he wanted to do video editing, more photoshop/illustrator work and some gaming. I dropped the GPU to a 460 since he really doesn't care much about playing on high settings at 1080p, and instead went with a 6600K, which he can save money on because we live near a microcenter. I've used the rest of your build though, thanks for the link!
Didn't have enough confidence in AMD and the Canadian dollar to wait on a build, myself. Also the synthetic benchmarks I'm seeing for the 7700k...well, I'm glad I didn't wait. Remains to be seen how it really ends up but I doubt I'd be able to get anywhere near the prices I got from black friday for my 6700k build anyways.

Exactly what GTX 1070 is this?
The graphs look ok, it seems the nasty points are where the fps is holding at 60 but the frametime is varying from 5-30ms. Thats whats causing the massive stuttering feeling.
Its either the game, you have an EVGA 1070?, some RAM issue which causes game to break at some random time.
In nvidia control panel, set the global settings to default. Set the game settings in nvidia control panel to follow global settings.
If this was a motherbaord issue i expect it would manifest in all games. With RAM issues it can be random depending on how the game handles it, and its memory allocation.
Have you dropped the memory frequency to 2133Mhz? Try giving the RAM a bit more voltage than spec. 1.3v should be plenty. If its rated at 1.35v, give it 1.37v.

The fury's were going for around $250 on newegg and other places not too long ago. I've picked it up and saw a ~20% increase over my 390. Its on an older architecture though and its only 4GB of VRAM.
