VA-11 HALL-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action |OT| Do Androids Drink To Electric Beats?

I got this game a couple of weeks ago, and have played through it 3 times since (still working on getting all the achievements). My first time playing it, I just blew through it in two days, which I regretted the instant the credits started to roll. In hindsight, I wish I had taken my time with it, but I was just so invested and I really wanted to see more new pieces of dialogue as soon as possible.

Although I can't help but raise an eyebrow at how they advertised this game. Specifically how much they decided to use "waifus" as a selling point. I mean, they're not wrong, but that just seems so bizarre, and I can just imagine people seeing that word and immediately being turned off of it. Hopefully not.

Anyway, I really liked most of the characters, and I thought the remaining few were just okay. But Jill is definitely my favorite out of all of them. I like her design, as well as her sharp wit and no-nonsense attitude. I can also relate to her in so many ways. Like how she's easily distracted, doesn't like getting up early, has a childish sense of humor, had a breakdown because she wasn't sure that what she studied in college was something she wanted to do for the rest of her life...

...

Oh, and we're both 27. There's that too.

EDIT: Also, whats the name of the song that plays during the credits?

The game is full of references to Internet culture. The advertising is absolutely in line with what the actual product is like, so I thought that they did it perfectly.

People who are put off by that wouldn't have really liked the game.

Wow thanks. I tried extracting him out of the background myself in photoshop, but it didn't look too good for some reason. Some aliasing or feathering issues.

I decided to go with this jill avatar that I cropped out of one of the ingame scenes.
He's a bit fat for the avatar dimensions though, so whoever wants to use it probably should figure out a way to fill in the rest of the ears for better proportions.

I'm very LTTP because I had intended to wait for this to go on sale before jumping in, but impulse bought it the other day and am wholeheartedly glad that I didn't wait a moment longer.

Only on chapter 2 but this is the front runner for my GOTY, and Jill is handily filling out the spot for favorite video game protagonist.

Question about the end of chapter 1 - does the number of beers you manage to drink affect the content/length of the conversation at all?

I didn't notice any difference in the dialogue between drinking 1 beer and 6 but while I wasn't outright skipping text, I was only absentmindedly reading. Maybe drinking all her stash might do something?

Yes.

Most importantly it affects the ending of the conversation. If you have Jill remain sober, then
she and Dana will make plans for a vacation, which (I believe) unlocks one of the epilogue slides at the end of the game
. If you get her drunk, then
Jill will tell a funny story in regards to her first time having sex
.

If you have Jill drink enough beer, she'll also comment on
how hot she finds Alma
in the middle of the conversation. If you keep her sober than she'll keep that to herself.

Do you happen to remember what the
funny story about Jill's first time was about
? Not sure if I remember seeing that, though I did get the
Alma comment
.

It was about how awkward it was considering she apparently burst into laughter when she saw her boyfriend's thing.

Odd, I don't specifically remember anything like that. I basically stopped as soon as Jill's face turned red though.

You have to drink through the entire case of beer. She gets quite drunk and expresses that
penises are weird

Also in the 4th playthrough and still discovering new things. For example the jerk who comes in on day 1 and insults the bar and such.
Give him sweet drinks instead of his hard manly drinks.

I just finished my first run through the game and
got Jill making up with her ex-girlfriend's little sister
ending
(and then a vacation with boss)
.
Is there anything resembling a walk through with each character's flags and what drink should be served?

This looks really intresting. I'll have to add it to my wishlist for now.

This reminded me of a particular bartending anime that you guys might want to check out. It has a rotating cast of troubled characters who drop in and get served a particular drink. I remember loving it back when it aired.

Bartender (2006)

Just a bump to say the game is on sale on Steam right now, 33% off. Might end up picking this up.

Still no Mac demo available though. :(

Yep, I just did. I'll go right to it after I finish Silver Case.

Funny, I'm playing VA-11 HALL-A and just bought The Silver Case to play afterwards.

Anyway, this game is absolutely fantastic and I wish I saw it being discussed more. I can't wait for the Vita port to be done so LRG will (hopefully) release a physical version.

Sooo, does this game like, take place in an alternate reality where men and women's positions in society are swapped or what?
Like, in one of the threads someone mentions that they are a guy and everyone else in the thread says he is just saying that for attention.

The board is a parody of 4chan's /r9k/ board IIRC, but with genders swapped.

Anyone on the fence should buy this game. It showed me how you actually write fucking characters instead of goddam tropes. Also, the soundtrack is godly.

You still have a good bit to learn if you're still thinking of tropes in a pejorative sense.

This game came out in a conversation, and I was surprised to know it was made by fellow Venezuelans. I hope this government didn't do anything to their profits (but knowing them....).

I'll play the demo and then buy the game, even if I don't like it, but I'll probably will since I did work in a bar for a while in the same country lol.

I was impatiently waiting for the PSN port but last week I finally caved and bought it on Steam. Everything about this game appeals to me. I'm almost done with my first playthrough and I have really enjoyed it. Great PC98 aesthetic and the music is top notch. Sometimes the writing is a bit heavy handed or samey but overall it's good.

This game is great, the first game to help me out of my relapsed WoW addiction.

I like so many things, the music, the characters and setting, the clever new way choice works in a VN. But what I really love is the artstyle - reminscent to PC98 style classics like Snatcher. Just plain beautiful.

Just finished it for the first time yesterday, rushed through it in 2 days which is kind of a bummer, but I'm looking forward to playing again for the other endings and achievements (my pc has been offline so long the achievements didn't work)
Really a fantastic with great characters and an amazing soundtrack, I actually bought the soundtrack before I played the game :p

I'm in the middle of my first playthrough and I didn't save money. Didn't think the rent would be so high, but I guess I was wrong and my first ending is going to be the bad one.

It is weak that this game went on a daily sale but not on sale for Thanksgiving :/

The devs are in Venezuela; they need the cash. I HAPPILY paid full price for this game.
Sorry if it sounds rude but I don't care. They put out a product. I may buy the product. I don't get involved in their personal situations. It also isn't as if they didn't previously put the game on sale. Moreover, Steam sales have historically demonstrated cash surges.

Good games should get recognized but preferably for the game itself. IMO.

It's been on sale and it'll be on sale again. I don't really see the point in going into the OT just to complain you missed a window. If for nothing else then for the fact you'd probably find more sympathy in one of the sale or haul threads.

And yes, games should be recognized for the game itself. Not just because you saved 40% on the original MSRP.

I didn't message them. I posted my disappointment with it not being on sale on GAF and somehow people told me to care about Venezuela. Venezuela sounds more off topic than the price of the game. What if it was on sale and I posted about that? Would it be off topic? You don't have to defend everything. Relax. I am sorry my post offended and hurt you in some way. It wasn't my intent. I wanted to express excitement for the game and dismay at it not participating in the Steam sale.

Thankfully, I have a strong suspicion the game will be discounted for Winter Sale. I'll grab it then and hopefully a bigger crowd will be here in the OT. Looking forward to it.

I wish more games took such risks in their art styles.

LOL at consumers thinking they're charities or something. Whatever.

Normally I might maybe agree with you, but I think it's important to support game developers who live in areas where there's not much representation. We tend to get games that only tell certain stories, and from certain cultural viewpoints. That puts a limitation on the perspectives and creativity we have access to in the medium.

Granted, VA-11 is not a fundamentally Venezuelan game AFAIK, but perhaps they'll do something that shares that perspective down the road.

??? I'm buying their game. I don't understand this sort of mentality. If they don't want to sell it at that price, it's fine. Keep it at whatever they think it should be.

I really don't want to get sucked into this discussion. I don't care to debate economics with gamers. I just want to talk about the game itself. Sorry. I will bow out of this line of discussion.

Wasn't going in on you, just sharing a different viewpoint. Have fun with the game.

Thanks. I'm looking forward to it. I'm not sure where I first learned of the game but it's too bad sites like Giant Bomb haven't covered it. It just oozes style and charm.
