Christ. Grenade launchers? Tracked armored vehicles? .50 Cal weapons? Fucking weaponized aircraft? If they want military equipment then they may as well be considered a branch of the military at this point.

Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, Police.

Is crime in America this bad that you need military equipment. I mean our police has AK47 but at least we have the excuse of not being a first world country and is a shit excuse at that, plus we had Boko Haram. Does anything in USA justify this, from the John Oliver vid i'm guessing no since isn't crime in US overall down.

My parents live in a town of 2,500 people and they just got a fucking armored car.

The fuck do you need an armored car for.

If there is even a single black or brown person that lives there, that one person is more dangerous than all the others combined. They gotta be prepared for if that guy takes a walk outside.

Nope, crime has been going down for years in most states. Cops just want to play soldier.

I am going to make it through this year if it kills me

Well, they are a paramilitary force already.

I'm actually surprised bayonets are still used, is there any tactical reason for them today?

No. The military spends a few hours out of a couple of days "training" on them, mostly because the pugil stick beatdown that it culminates in is a good way of promoting aggression and getting away with having recruits beat each other senseless without Congress complaining too much.

It isn't. Our police aren't facing criminals armed with rocket launchers and IEDs. Some cops just want to live out their fantasies of playing soldier while in the comfort of their small town of Whereverthefuck.

For you.
You can never be too prepared when shit hits the fan.

The more cops have access to weapons which can stop terrorists and possible terrorist attacks which target innocent people, in their tracks., the better. But if only they get proper training to know how to use a fucking grenade launcher lol.
They'll kill many more innocent people than those terrorists will, you can damn well bet that.

Nah, it has nothing to do with crime. It's about ill trained fuckwits trying to go on a power trip and enact their psychopathic tendencies on innocent people without going to jail for it. The requirements to be a cop in the US are way too fucking low.

Bayonetes and grenade launchers, really? What the fuck? And why would the police ever need bayonetes?

So they can stab some people in between shooting them. Don't want shit to get monotonous.

Now on a more serious note, what the fuck ? I can't fathom a logical excuse for the need for grenade launchers and the rest.

They're hypothetically useful if you're worried about running out of ammo or being physically overrun, which are constant threats to police officers and in no way an indication they think they're going to be fighting huge mobs and mowing down civilians in droves.

If the police feel they need this to complete their mission they should have access.

Trump ran on law and order.

It's weird that there are people who see a militarized police force as a good thing. Basically rich white people who the police serve first and foremost, I suppose. Oh, also stupid, poor white people who voted for Trump.

Bayonets are stupid and wanting them really just shows that the police are pursuing this stuff out of gee-whiz wannabe soldier syndrome rather than any practical needs.

Bayonets are a joke in the military. Bayonet training is the single most hilariously outdated and useless part of basic combat training, and it's really only kept in because we all kind of like taking a day off to beat each other up with pugil sticks and pretend like we're on American Gladiator.

That's not my point though. I agree they have no practical use, but simply owning one there's nothing inherently wrong with it. Modern bayonets as well as historically accurate reproductions, and authentic ww1/2 bayonets are available to collectors as well as the general public depending on the state of your residence. I simply don't get why bayonets were included in this restriction in the first place.

They're a waste of money and would be the police equivalent of running with scissors?

They have no purpose other than stabbing people.

Why don't police carry cavalry sabres? You can own them, they're often used in historical reenactments and parades. and certainly have collector's value.

Maybe it's because the idea of a police officer hacking at people with a cavalry sabre is goddamn horrifying?

President Barack Obama issued an executive order restricting that access in 2015 amid an outcry over police use of armored vehicles and other war-fighting gear to confront protesters in Ferguson, Missouri, after the fatal shooting of Michael Brown. Since then, federal officials have recalled more than 1,800 items, which have been destroyed through target practice or otherwise disposed of, officials say.

...

Since then, the Defense Logistics Agency has recalled 138 grenade launchers, more than 1,600 bayonets and 126 tracked vehicles — those that run on continuous, tank-like tracks instead of wheels — that were provided through the military's 1033 program, agency spokeswoman Michelle McCaskill said.
So for the last year, nearly 90% of the things the federal government has recovered from local police departments that it gave them are bayonets.

If it's not being payed for by the department why would you care? A private citizen can own a bayonet, why can't a police officer.

Also once again I'm not advocating that police be equipped with bayonets just that it's absurd they were banned in the first place.

Wait. What? So the PD supplies officers with bayonets? 1,600? These have to be old pre ww2 surplus or something.

They already have tanks, armoured cars, and more gucci kit than a SOF team, WTF else do they need to add to their arsenal? 50cal machine guns and rocket launchers? America is turning into a terrifying police state.
