I wonder if the base station will allow for external drives, with SD cards used for a portable selection of games. Thankfully capacities have grown though.

External drives on the dock would totally go against the philosophy of the Switch being a device you can dock and undock at any time.

The information may not be wrong. If the source is working with unfinished OS and it lacks a browser, then they are simply relaying current information. Things change and if the OS isn't complete, then stuff can be added as launch nears. The info could be accurate at the current time, but it may not be an indicator of what comes at launch.

He shouldn't make a splash about it not having a browser and a Netflix app to begin with, telling people multiple times, that he wouldn't bet on it being there at launch because of what his source is telling him. I mean, relaying information like this and it not turning out in the end will reward him a ban, why the gamble?

So the current rumor for storage is Micro SD card support right? I'll be really interested to see how digital games fare on the Switch if this is the case. The most reasonable price I've seen on Micro SD cards are 128Gb units for $40 and under. Once you jump up to 256Gb it seems to quadruple in price.

If the "Deluxe" model of the Switch could give us 128Gb of storage, that wouldn't be too bad. It would just feel weird now that most consoles let you have Terabytes of storage available. I suppose the hybrid form factor will be worth the trade off in the end. There's also the idea that TB Micro SD cards are coming and could be viable options down the line.

How does everyone else feel about this? I'll probably just grab a 128Gb for now and wait to see how the tech advances. It just doesn't seem to make much financial sense to grab a 256 any time soon.

Still a lot better than the Vita proprietary cards that stopped at 64GB for about $100.

The problem is Vern seems to be claiming that Nintendo's philosophy with the Switch is to make it primarily a games device and they are actively and intentionally deciding to withhold a browser and support for apps like Netflix. Which, A) is crazy to me, and B) doesn't strike me as something a developer working with a Switch devkit would know.

I'm willing to make some sort of bet here that the Switch will have a browser at launch (edit: within 1 month of launch) and have Netflix within the first few (edit: first 3 months) months after launch.

One of the interesting side effects of limiting storage expansion to Micro SD cards is that not all Micro SD cards have good read speeds. In fact, many of the cheaper Micro SD cards have outright bad read speeds, and considering read speed is one area where the game cards and internal flash memory for the Switch will have a major advantage over PS4/XB1, it's a bit disappointing that Nintendo will likely not be able to actually take advantage of that... advantage. Since you'd likely need to support any type of Micro SD card.

Why would a devkit have a Netflix app on it in the first place?

A) Ubisoft has publically stated something that kind of contradict this, that Switch will appeal not only to core gamers.

(not) Fun-Fact:
3DS didn't launch with a functional browser or eShop and Wii U needed a big day one patch for BC and other features.
Would explain the rumors, but hopefully they don't do that again. Wii U's launch was pretty bad due to all the updates

My 3DS has a 128GB card in it, and I paid $100 for it a few years ago. The fact that it's down to $40 is insane to me

SanDisk has a 200GB model for $62 on Amazon right now

Most likely no external drive drives. Makes no sense. What if a game runs and you take the switch out of the dock? The only storage will be sd and game cards.

well, i rather have to copy a game from the hard drive to the SD than download it everytime i want to play it.

External drives on the dock would totally go against the philosophy of the Switch being a device you can dock and undock at any time.

i mean you could select what games you want to have always available or something, because deleting and redownloading games will be a chore

This is basically what I'm saying. The devkit lacking the functionality of a browser right now may not serve as a indicator of what the future holds.

Netflix is an entirely different matter.

I want more Platinum games, Nintendo got a taste of the action genre dont leave it behind :'(

I want Nintendo to be a time capsule to SNES->PS2/GCN gaming in general, including your character action games, turn based-RPGs, platformers, Nintendo style adventure games (Zelda/Metroid), etc.

Moreover a portable HD time capsule :).

Really I want lots of Nintendo and lots of Japanese third party games. And I want them to be good and to cater to my tastes :p.

I don't think I'm risking a ban saying the general direction that the OS is going in, plus adding my own speculation. If I am then umm, ok I'll stop. I didn't know that only completely and wholly uninformed people were allowed a Monopoly on making predictions.

Apologies for riling people up. Like I said yesterday, let's wait and see. If I hear something 100 percent though I'll fill you guys in if its wanted.

It's one thing to speculate/express just your personal opinion and another thing to suggest you have information from reliable sources.

If you hear something 100% go first to a mod to vet you and your sources.

Edit: especially mixing information from sources with your own info without mentioning which is which is very disingenuous.

If there's HDD support, I'm sure Nintendo will create a data managment tool that will allow you to move games from the HDD to the SD card and viceversa.

Like antibolo says tho, it goes against the core concept of the console so who knows..

I know that the information is reliable. The direction of the OS and features, as I said from the beginning. General direction. The rest I believe I made clear was my speculation. I said it was my own prediction based on what I know multiple times. If it wasn't clear, again, I apologize.

Edit: once again, I went to mods with offers of proof of a few things about two months ago now at least. They said they aren't in the business of vetting users.

After the disaster TVii ended up being I'm pretty sure Nintendo themselves aren't interested in building those app experiences for some time at least. But since they're partnering with Nvidia on the hardware and DeNA on the online structure we'll see what the end result is going to be.

In other news, I'm selling off my Wii U before Christmas and going by the interest in generates on eBay it will greatly boost my Switch fund. Other than for the money I wanted to sell Mario Kart and the like to not play them until March so they can feel somewhat fresh again on Switch with the additional content.

What do you exactly mean by the direction of the OS and features?

That's definitely a good point! I don't consider myself a tech snob, but the pricing I provided seems to be for higher end Micro SD cards. Did Nintendo have any limitations on their SD card support for 3DS? Things like transfer speed?

Still a lot better than the Vita proprietary cards that stopped at 64GB for about $100.

No doubt! Proprietary memory really sucks. I'm so glad that Nintendo hasn't gone this route in terms of external storage. In fact, they've actually been quite progressive. Wasn't the Wii-U one of the first consoles to allow the use of large external drives?

My 3DS has a 128GB card in it, and I paid $100 for it a few years ago. The fact that it's down to $40 is insane to me

Memory certainly drops in price rather quickly once new models come out. That's why I don't think this question will even be an issue in a year or two. At the moment, it looks like we'll have limited options at launch. As for the 200Gb card, I saw that as well but wasn't a fan of the reviews and transfer speed.

I said it already here, focus on games and not to expect many or any third party entertainment apps (at least at launch). I also mentioned how much RAM for the OS which I believe other "insiders" also later confirmed? I think i was first... I don't know I don't really follow these threads much just pop in every week or two to see what's new.

Plus just because things may have been true 1,2,3 months ago it doesn't mean they are true today or things true today will be true at launch. It's best to just wait for Nintendo to make their real announcement.

I'll head back out again for awhile too because I'm not helping anything, just making people angry or whatever. I don't think I've said anythjng worthy of a ban, that'd be a steep price to pay for making educated guesses and making it clear that's what they are. Sorry people.

Your edit: I wouldn't expect a mod to post without proof, so he'd have to vet me. Anyway. Keep up the speculation. A month to go!

Did anyone in the UK get an email from Nintendo about a prize draw to try out the switch in London? There's an "enter here" button on the email, but there isn't actually a link - the email's just one big image. Is there an actual link to it anywhere?

Click the "View email in browser" link and then click from there. Just worked for me.

No known insider has confirmed this as far as I know.

Quite convenient.

This is not what you said last time you went away for a while to let the things calm a bit:

I was not vetted. Prior to when I entered this thread and confirmed the specs and mentioned a few other things, I did PM a mod and told him i had some info i wanted to share anonymously. I was then sent to another mod for discussion. I was told they don't want to get involved and post on a user's behalf. I do have some proof I would have been willing to share under the right circumstances. But those circumstances obviously didn't work out so I just instead chose to come in here and confirm basically what's already known, as well as a few other details.

Why so serious. It's either discussion based on assumptions (no hard info) or no discussion at all until the event.

And I did discuss with you based on assumptions. That's not a problem.

Pretending to be an insider is pretty serious though. See 10k. Or Verendus.

In this case it's Vern seemingly mixing some inside info (which no one can verify) with his own speculation and not doing a great job of distinguishing the two types of info.

Like, you have a source saying that the devkit has no browser or similar OS features, or your source is also saying that they know somehow that Nintendo is positioning this as a no frills gaming device? It's hard to tell based on his posts, and even harder to put much faith into it based on the fact that no one can verify that he's in a position to know these things.

- Ok. I don't pay attention I thought others had also said the same. We will see when they release the specs anyway. Would you rather i had it said that? Thought you guys wanted info.

- It doesn't benefit me in any way to contribute things I know obviously, so why stick around? I have other things to do.

- I said I went to mods, obviously they'd need to vet me before they share something anon for me. Why else would they post info for a random user if not having vetted me first? Not sure where the part you don't understand about that comes in. I'm not gonna post PMs.

And I did discuss with you based on assumptions. That's not a problem.

Pretending to be an insider is pretty serious though. See 10k. Or Verendus.

I don't think I ever claimed to be an insider, though I'm not sure where the line is drawn on knowing more than the general public vs being an insider.

At skittz, I tried to make clear which was speculation based on "guidance" vs what I know for a fact. Sorry if I wasn't clear. I said I personally wouldn't bet on a browser or Netflix, not that they definitely aren't there. Again, sorry to make everyone all upset or whatever.

Since they will be marketing this as a console I fully expect it to come with one pro controller. They may get the price to 299.

They have the joycon grip controller, though. I expect them to include only that in the base package, since it is a controller. Will personally get the pro controller, but I don't think they will drive the price up by adding a pro controller in the package.

I wouldn't expect that. You'll get the middle part that combines the two joy-cons instead.

I agree with Pachimari here. If anything, I think we'll get the Grip as they've shown that off in all of their promotional images. That and Nintendo will want to charge $50+ for the pro controller on its own.

I'm gonna disagree. The pro controller could wind up being cheaper than past pro controllers though, but I really wouldn't expect one bundled with the base SKU at least.

This whole marketing thing is silly too. They're calling it a home console in the west and a handheld in Japan because those are the types of devices those regions favor. Iwata explicitly talked about being able to market products differently to different regions for this exact reason. It has nothing to do with what the device will be, just how they want to position it.

I think my hype is too high for this console. Not sure why I am looking forward to in so much. I don't really like portable gaming much and have always felt the DS line steals too many good games from the Nintendo home consoles. So my hype is because I can finally play a real Pokemon on my TV.

All of those handheld ports is the fuel behind my excitement, hoping for less DS only games.

I owned a 3DS for a while but the small screen is not great for my poor eyesight and the Wii U gamepad size is not ideal.

I'd say if you have information which is relevant to the topic at hand and you can't share it due to NDA or secrecy in general (i.e. you'd get someone in trouble) then I would consider you an insider. That's how I see it anyway, others could see it differently.

As for the information, I'm just confused about what you've been told versus what your speculation is. I've looked over your past posts and it doesn't seem clear at all. Were you told that the devkit has no browser or apps like Netflix? Were you told that Nintendo's messaging to developers about this device is that it's a gaming device and will not feature multimedia apps like a web browser or Netflix? Or is that second part your speculation based on the devkit not having those features?

And I don't think people are getting angry or upset here, I think it's more just general confusion. These are features which are virtually ubiquitous to any consumer electronics device, have been on all of Nintendo's previous devices, and based on what we know are incredibly easy to implement. So coming in here claiming that we won't be seeing them is a bit of a bombshell, especially when we don't know which part of your conclusion is based on inside information and which is personal speculation.

I hope that clarifies my position.

At this point, I'm sure both console bundles will come with the Joy-con grip. It seems too vital to leave out (at least where the Switch is being marketed as a "Home Console".

I'm like 95% sure that is the case, regardless of the marketing terms being used, because the grip is the only way to charge the joycons when they're not on the device. So in order to actually use them consistently with the Switch docked, you need a charger like that.

I 100% agree with you here. I initially thought that we'd only see the Grip included with at "Deluxe" model, but the charging scenario you mentioned seems to rule that out. I'm betting that a "Deluxe" model just has more memory and Splatoon. I think you were the one who suggested it might be 32Gb vs 128Gb which I can definitely see as well.

Man... I just want to pre-order this thing.

Yeah but the grip was with two additional joycons so it might be a bit misleading.
Unless they're giving two more joycons with it, which would be awesome but I doubt it.

I think that was moreso for display purposes. It's a better visual to have the two joycons on the Grip, as well as attached to the Switch than fumbling them around in a quick demonstration. It's also likely that the extra joycons weren't sync'd up to that Switch, which would explain why they avoided talking about the Grip.

Has this product ever been patented in territories where Nintendo will be selling the Switch?

I don't know. But I see how it's a very pertinent question.
