Ventura Beat: Nintendo Switch graphics are based on Nvidia's Maxwell Architecture

I'll wait for Laura to say something.

But Venture Beat doesn't seem to know what they're talking about with power of the system.

Added another paragraph to the OP. Basically said Nintendo wanted to move from Wii U and couldn't wait on the newer chips. Speculated that it might be closer to Xbox One but not sure.
This may be OK, and the Switch’s high-definition visuals may still be satisfying to a lot of gamers, who will also appreciate its dual purpose of being played in the home as a console and on the run as a portable system. But the Kyoto-based Japanese company was in such a rush to replace its failing Wii U that it couldn’t wait for the updated Pascal version of the graphics technology, sources told us. This means that the Switch doesn’t have as much visual horsepower as the PS4 when played on a television, and it may not be able to handle 4K graphics, either. If Nintendo had waited for Pascal, it would have had to push back the launch date of the Switch. We’re not so sure if the Switch is weaker than the Xbox One, as the performance may be close.

it better be affordable. I'm not spending £250+ on old Nvidia tablet tech. Also explains the big arse vents on the unit.

Uhh, rather it is Maxwell or Pascal, it doesn't tell you how powerful the system is. One is just on a smaller process and is much more energy efficient than the other.

That affects how much power can be put into the Switch's power bracket.

So yes, in certain ways it does tell you the limitations of the console

However, it means little until we get full confirmation of this, and it will still have meant little considering it still means Switch can get Xbox One and PS4 games with some condensing.

Bolded is ???.

Pascal is a die-shrink of Maxwell, what is this paragraph even. This is a nonsensical quote that makes zero sense.

Yeah, the piece isn't great. The quote about how it will be fine for "cartoon-style" graphics doesn't help anyone either, it just gives people incorrect preconceptions.

it honestly means nothing. We have other good sources saying otherwise. Honestly we have a month to find out.

Dean Tak is solid writer, and his sources could be good, but that article was so poorly written it hurt my head.

We honestly have no idea if anything is true. Less than 4 weeks, I think we can wait.

I thought the writing was a bit off as well... Its one thing to report on a story like this, but the article seemed overwhelmingly negative. I don't follow this guy normally, but is he normally more objective?

I hope most of you guys are not serious.

Pascal vs Maxwell is not about the graphical power.

It's more about power consumption. This article is.. questionable.

both of these are the right way to go about this.
The right way to go is assume disappointment with nintendo and hardware power.

Whatever is the truth you should keep in mind that this thing will be less powerful than you want and less than a ps4/xb1 anyway.

They want it cheap AND make money from it on day one. Expect the screen to be cheap too, especially since it's an easy selling point for a second version later.

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
Freak, smartphones will end up catching up to the Switch in power >.>

Current smartphones already have more power than whatever the Switch will be packing.

Running a game with respectable 3D graphics while having a respectable battery life without overheating, well that's a totally different story.

The whole tone of the article, if quoted directly, sounds like it was written by someone who hasn't the faintest idea what they're writing about. In any case, I couldn't really care so long as it looks good and has a good library of games. If it was a portable Wii U quality device I'd probably still buy it.

I don't think this writer knows the difference between Maxwell and Pascal, because they are drawing power analogues when the design differences as efficiency gains with identical architecture on a smaller die.

Also what is this Xbox1 scale, you're not getting that with an old Maxwell chip.

Started reading the article, got to that, laughed.

Yeah, I'm taking this with the truck load of salt. They probably don't know what they are talking about. Probably talking about information based on dev kits.

Yeah almost seems like a bot article.

That makes no sense.. Its not stronger to put out PS4 visuals but closer to Xbox One..??? When Xbox One and PS4 already close.. the fuck? lol

And in a limited power consumption device, more efficiency for the same power draw means more _____?

Core Duo started out as a mobile part. Turned out efficiency meant fitting more power into laptops, and Intels direction changed ever since.

Not saying the article is right, but when you're so power use limited, power consumption and end performance go hand in hand. We've seen this countless times and it's why major chipmakers have gone "mobile first". Even in higher power draw environments, efficiency intrinsically tied to performance due to physical power draw limits.

Yeah actually he is usually pretty good in that he is well connected and well sourced.

But reading this it is clear he is out of his element, and honestly seems out of the scene with regards to Switch.

Again, truck loads of salt, we honestly have no idea.

I'm honestly in this thread just because I knew someone would bring the DBZ comparisons. Those always crack me up.

I don't believe anyone at this point.

and here is why nintendo loses in the spec war post gamecube. They could get rid of most rumor mongering releasing typical stats and saying deal with it. Anyone bitching or whining form then on can be called out too be it press, devs or consumers who don't really play nintendo systems for whatever reasons.

That makes no sense to me. Nvidia is revealing a new Shield TV this January, and that's not going to have the same X1 in 2015's Shield TV and early Switch dev kits. The new chips therefore exist now.

Given Iwata also said the goal is to make forwards compatible software with the NX platform and software that's more "portable" (i.e. Not tied to a single hardware spec) it's not like devs won't be able to target moving goalposts for final Switch gen1 hardware.

But... But It had the power of a PS4 in my dreams.

Hm, if I stay in bed all day, I can live a day-dream where Switch has Scorpio power.

Thanks for the tip, mate! Does anyone want to join me for a local Coop session of Red Dead 2?

Not really sure what to make of this one. I don't particularly trust it more than any other source, so I'll just wait for actual confirmation.
