SUBMISSIONS ARE NOW CLOSED

You can post lists for fun if you want but they will not be counted after this point. Please make no further edits to your lists.

I don't have a specific date for the results but I hope to have them by the weekend. Thanks for participating everyone!

We had a couple threads on music in 2016 already, but this is the one where you post your official list and the results get tallied up at the end!

RULES!!!!

Please follow these or your list may be thrown out !!!

 • Use correct spelling.
 • No abbreviations.
 • If your list is not clearly ranked it will not be counted.
 • Only albums released in 2016 - I'm not going to be too picky as long as there's a case for it (a greatest hits collection would probably not be counted).
 • EPs are allowed.
 • Try to avoid singles, but again I won't be too picky.
 • Post as many or as few albums as you like, but only the top 25 receive points.
 • You can edit your list as much as you like until the deadline.
Use this format:

1 | Artist | Album
2 | Artist | Album
3 | Artist | Album

I won't disqualify you if you do 1. Artist - Album or something like that, it's just not as easy for me to tabulate.

Point system is simple:

1 = 6 points
2-3 = 5 points
4-6 = 4 points
7-10 = 3 points
10-15 = 2 points
16-25 = 1 point

If you have issue with that let me know, I'll consider other systems as long as they are easy to use.

Lastly, posting comments is encouraged! If you post comments with your albums, I will include some of them in the final results! It also makes the thread more fun to read and will help your fellow Gaffers key in on some recommendations. Album art is cool too!

Check out this post from 2014 for an example of an ideal submission!

Check out this post for an example of a standard valid submission!

That's it! Have fun everyone, I look forward to seeing what you enjoyed in music this year!

Oh cool, I've been waiting for this.

If tl;dr, here's a handy playlist!

6uwoXwV.jpg

1 | Kero Kero Bonito | Bonito Generation
Makes Intro Bonito sound like a tossed-off collection of leftovers, which it actually kind of is. Bonito Generation is relentlessly upbeat, often goofy, and never very far from another killer hook. It's the album you always hoped Kero Kero Bonito would make. (Trampoline, Lipslap)

2 | Yosa | Orion
Without much fanfare, Orion snuck into my rotation time and time again. Laid-back hip-hop beats that beg for an endless summer of youthful indiscretions. (夜明け前, Navy)

3 | brinq | Magical brinq Tour
Imagine the glorious synthpop of CHVRCHES, but with a bit more house and a lot more kawaii. That's brinq, and while the formula occasionally becomes overbearing, when it hits, it hits like the atom bomb. (baby baby, Time to Say Goodbye, bonus non-album track: ミュージック イズ マジック)

4 | NZCA Lines | Infinite Summer
Austere, space-age synthpop for a utopian future we'll only ever get to imagine. (Persephone Dreams, Two Hearts, Jessica)

5 | chelmico | chelmico
Carefree Japanese rap duo. Hooks and rhymes in equal measure. (ラビリンス'97, Love Is Over)

6 | ASEUL | New Pop
Fractured post-midnight electronic pop from South Korea. (Give Me Five, Dazed)

7 | MCpero | の一人遊び
Now that Daoko's gone major label and mainstream pop, we need a new rapper to claim her throne. MCpero's my pick; more attitude and a weirder sonic palette, but still with a pop sensibility. (SKIP, 天の川)

8 | Honeyblood | Babes Never Die
What I loved so much about Honeyblood's first album, the brooding post-grunge intensity that reminded me so much of angst-ridden adolescence, is mostly gone here. In its place is a fresh energy that cuts deeper and hits harder. (Ready For the Magic, Sea Hearts)

9 | Beth Orton | Kidsticks
I wrote Beth Orton off shorlty after the milquetoast Daybreaker, and found no reason to come back during her self-imposed folk exile. Fine music, I'm sure, but not for me. Whatever the reasons for her return to electronic music, getting Beth Orton back at this late stage feels a bit like a miracle. (Moon, 1973)

10 | Sunny Day Service | Dance to You
It has the same gently nostalgic vibe of other jangly-guitar indie pop bands like Real Estate, but also some additional quality--an extra burst of energy, an added dash of soul. Maybe it's what happens when a decades-old band reunites and finds its stride again. (セツナ x2 because idk, I'm a boy)

11 | Charisma.com | 愛泥C
Maybe the most reliably entertaining Charisma.com release to date. (サプリミナル・ダイエット, 自撮ール)

12 | Suiyoubi no Campanella | UMA
No one else sounds quite like Suiyoubi no Campanella's heady mix of house beats and KOM_I's impish rhymes. Less immediate than some of its predecessors, UMA nevertheless shows evolution. (ツチノコ, チュパカブラ)

13 | Carly Rae Jepsen | EMOTION Side B
If only everyone's cutting room floor scraps were so catchy. (Body Language, Cry)

14 | Especia | CARTA
Especia's swan song showed the group's willingness to experiment with their sound, sometimes for the better (Interstellar) and sometimes not (Clover). And when they reach striking distance of the vaporwave-idols sound of Gusto (Boogie Aroma, Aviator), the formula Especia built their name on still shines. (Aviator / Boogie Aroma)

15 | Parakeet | KASA
Drenched in reverb and mid-90s guitar crunch like candy coatings on a Tootsie Pop. (Monsoon, Pink Noise)

16 | Tacocat | Lost Time
Feminist power-pop from the band that brought you the new Powerpuff Girls theme song. (I Hate the Weekend, Dana Katherine Scully)

17 | Gurr | In My Head
If riot grrl and surf rock had a child, this might be the result. Never has a German band sounded so much like they should be in Southern California. (Moby Dick, Walnuts)

18 | Shiggy Jr | ALL ABOUT POP
It rarely comes off as anything more than a collection of singles and should-be-singles, but when the singles sound this good... (恋したらベイベー, サマータイムラブ)

19 | Rainbow Chan | Spacings
Here mostly on the strength of first single Nest, one of my favourite songs of the year. (Nest)

20 | Trails and Ways | Own It
A bit more rock and a bit less bossa nova than first album Pathology, Own It doesn't quite reach the highs of its luminescent predecessor. (My Things)

Have to re-listen to a whole bunch of stuff, though. Random aside: if you'd told me a year ago that I'd ever like a new Beth Orton album again, I would've called you a big fat liar.

Shifting gear now, it's time for some psytrance. This list would probably have a lot more of JOOF on it if he ever actually put albums out. This is his third in 25 years and he decided to really go for it in a wonderful way. The tracks are dark and unforgiving, with some fantastic bass lines and build ups and some truly aggressive and energizing tracks.

Stand Out Tracks:
The Imperial Echos Of Devastation (2016 Rework)
Planet X
Desert Rider

05 | Anderson/Stolt | Invention Of Knowledge
UKINEhkm.jpg

Jon Anderson is a giant in the prog rock world and it's wonderful to see him back in full on 70s Yes mode with this new release. This time he's collaborating with Roine Stolt of Flower Kings fame, and it's a perfect match. This is full on 15 minute hippie prog with lots of nonsensical lyrics and great guitar and keyboard work to back it up. Anderson's voice is still great, which is pretty amazing at age 72! Much better than the last few albums Yes have put out.

Stand Out Tracks:
We Are Truth
Knowing

04 | 3rd Ear Experience | Stones of a Feather
XV4m7iwm.jpg

Yet more space rock, I'm starting to see a trend here... This southern Californian group, along with around 20 guests, returns for their 4th album. A great release with some nice variety amongst the tracks. Tracks are given space to breathe and there are some lovely quiet passages that give way to great build ups that really pay off well. Also features a great 20 minute jam taken from a live show, really driving and rocking the whole way.

Stand Out Tracks:
Space Tripping (Live)

03 | Causa Sui - Return To Sky
vP7FQuhm.jpg

Causa Sui are another space rock band that I discovered only recently, but which has had a big impact on my listening habits. After pouring through their back catalogue a number of times I was very happy to hear that they had new material on the way for 2016. Return To Sky is a wonderful album, with some fantastic guitar riffs and also stellar keyboard work, something that I often find is lacking as bands concentrate more on guitar and bass work.

Stand Out Tracks:
Dust Meridian
Dawn Passage

02 | Øresund Space Collective | Visions Of...
HVcL4SZm.jpg

I discovered space rock (a sub genre of psychedelic and progressive rock) in 2015, but 2016 was the year that I fully embraced the madness of this awesome genre. Øresund Space Collective are one of the great space rock bands, sitting on the jam band side of things. They never play a song twice, always performing new jams at every live show and studio session. Visions Of... is a triumph of jamming and space rock, with the 42 minute title track rolling along with a wonderful feel and sound. Above the Corner and Around the Corner are 2 sections of the same jam, this time pulling on funk as the main inspiration. These two are my favourites from the album.

Stand Out Tracks:
Above the Corner

01 | Radiohead | A Moon Shaped Pool
oAafsfNm.png

I've been a fan of Radiohead for about 10 years now and this is probably the most warm and inviting album that they've ever released. After some highly experimental and sometimes impenetrable releases it feels like Radiohead have finally opened up a bit. It's just great to hear guitar in a Radiohead song again, and the orchestral arrangements by Jonny Greenwood are a wonderful addition.

Stand Out Tracks:
Ful Stop
Daydreaming

1 | Frank Ocean | Blonde

The first time that I listened to this album was the day after a huge house party that I hosted. I saw it posted on Gaf that the album was out on Apple Music and I rushed to tell my hung over housemate who's a huge Frank Ocean fan. We hooked up my phone to a speaker that was still plugged in, and we listened to the whole thing front to back. Halfway through, my other housemate's mom who barely speaks English came in and remarked that we listened to good music.
That day is seared into my brain, and over time, the album itself was too. More than any other album in 2016, Blonde spoke to me. If I was having a bad day, turn on Blonde. If homework was driving me up the wall, put on Frankie. If I was walking down the street, start bumping Pink + White.

It's just that good. Also, The vinyl needs to get here yesterday.
Standout tracks: Pink + White; Solo;
everything but Facebook Story (why Frank?)

2 | Bon Iver | 22, A Million

This album took a bit to click with me, but the moment on 29 #Strafford APTS where Justin Vernon's voice gets all warbly just spoke to me. I was driving back from my girlfriend's school (which is a 3 hour drive) and the album just encapsulated how I was feeling in the moment. That was when I knew that this album was going to be high on my list at the end of the year. For Emma, Forever Ago is on my all-time list, and 22, a Million is making moves.
Standout tracks: 10 d E A T h b R E a s T ⚄ ⚄; 29 #Strafford APTS

3 | The Dear Hunter | Act V: Hymns with the Devil in Confessional

When a friend showed me The Dear Hunter for the first time, I wasn't quite sure what to think. Here was this band with a complex 6 album story arc which hadn't even been fully released yet. When Act IV dropped last year, I started to get into them a bit more, and when Casey said that they were releasing Act V this year, I started to think it might not be of the same quality. I was so wrong. If you haven't listened to this band yet, I implore you to give them a shot.
Standout tracks: Light; Gloria

4 | The Hotelier | Goodness

Quite a reversal in tone from their previous work, Goodness is the most hopeful album from The Hotelier yet. Love the way that songs flow into one another.
Standout tracks: Soft Animal, Piano Player

5 | A Tribe Called Quest | We got it from Here... Thank You 4 Your Service

This album came out at the perfect time. It feels like Tribe modernized, but not too much. Hits especially hard with Phife gone. Feels like an album we didn't deserve, but got anyways.
Standout Tracks: Space Program; Black Spasmodic

6 | Radiohead | A Moon Shaped Pool

Standout tracks: Glass Eyes; The Numbers

7 | Danny Brown | Atrocity Exhibition

Standout tracks: Ain't it Funny; Really Doe

8 | King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard | Nonagon Infinity

Standout Tracks: Gamma Knife; Mr. Beat

9 | Whitney | Light Upon the Lake

Standout tracks: No Woman; Dave's Song

10 | Childish Gambino | "Awaken, My Love!"

So much music I absolutely loved this year. Let's break down the top three.

1 | PUP | "The Dream is Over"
- It seems the past few years there's always one summer rock album that I live and die by. From Fucked Up, to Titus Andronicus, to The Hotelier, to The Hold Steady, I'm glad to say there's a new release I'll never ever stop bumping. This album is the best I've heard from front to back, song to song. It never stops giving. It is 10 anthems for every feeling and I'm glad in exists.

2 | Bon Iver | 22, A Million
- The first time I heard 22 (OVER S∞∞N) I listened to it about 10 times on repeat. The haunting feel, the cold sound to the lyrics, and yet how approachable it felt . . the album doesn't stop for me.

3 | Kanye West | The Life of Pablo
- No More Parties in LA. Real Friends. FML. Wolves. Fade. Ultra Light beam. Pt. 2. Waves. I feel like that's all I ever need to say. This album is uneven, atrocious in a few spots, but the high are so high it overcomes the lows.

4 | James Blake | The Colour in Anything
5 | The Hotelier | Goodness
6 | Weezer | Self-Titled (White Album)
7 | Hamilton Leithauser + Rostam | I Had a Dream That You Were Mine
8 | Radiohead | A Moon Shaped Pool
9 | Chance the Rapper | Coloring Book
10 | Danny Brown | Atrocity Exhibition

Use correct spelling.
I already see the disqualifications.

Here's my list, I will probably make some edits as well as add comments after I catch up on a few things :)

23 | Carly Rae Jepsen | EMOTION SIDE B
24 | Vince Staples | Prima Donna
25 | Jeff Rosenstock| Worry

Here is my top 20, with a link to one song from each of the top 10 anyone wants to hear some new tunes and discover some stuff.
1. Jeff Rosenstock | Worry
a3395996241_10.jpg

Essentially Anxiety: the album. Jeff Rosenstock writes lyrics like nobody else that are sad, hilarious and instantly relatable. Plus the songs rule.
Check out: I Did Something Weird Last Night

2. The Falcon | Gather Up the Chaps
The-Falcon-–-Gather-Up-The-Chaps-cover.jpg

The Falcon is a supergroup featuring members of The Lawrence Arms, Alkaline Trio and The Loved Ones that has been around for more than a decade and JUST put out their second album. A greasy, dirty rock and punk record with some of the funniest, most depressing and depraved lyrics I have ever heard. There is really no better punk record this year yet it flew under the radar. Stop sleeping on this.
Check out: Hasselhoff Cheeseburger

3. NOFX | First Ditch Effort
NOFX_First_Ditch_Effort.jpg

Who would have thought NOFX would put out their best record 33 years into their career? It doesn't make any sense, but this thing rules. Instead of the usual, juvenile NOFX affair, this thing is dark, heartbreaking and deeply saddening and it somehow works.
Check out: Generation Z

4. PEARS | Green Star
a4084201462_10.jpg

If you like punk, hardcore or metal go listen to PEARS. Then go see them live. This thing is a ripper.
Check out: Green Star

5. Direct Hit! | Wasted Mind
a1940515274_10.jpg

A concept album about psychedelics and superpowers and who knows what else wrapped neatly into a super catchy and tight pop/punk album. Every song will stick in your head.
Check out: Villain Alcoholic

6. Against Me! | Shape Shift With Me
Shape_Shift_with_Me_artwork.jpg

I loved Against Me!'s last record, Transgender Dysphoria Blues, for how raw and emotional it was, but the songs felt a little underdeveloped. This new one still has the emotional, angry appeal that one had but is more diverse, catch and relistenable. Great stuff.
Check out: Dead Rats

7. Childish Gambino | Awaken, My Love
Awaken,_My_Love!.jpg

I had no idea how I would feel about this album but it really is something else. Gambino can do funkadelic and prog. Who could have guessed.
Check out: Stand Tall

8. Metallica | Hardwired...to Self Destruct
I am astonished at how much I like this. I haven't really cared about Metallica in a long time but this hits all the right notes (unlike Kirk live). Thrashy but groovy and catchy with way better production than the last record. Plus THE RIFFS. SO MANY.

Check out: Atlas, Rise!

9. Brian Fallon | Painkillers
brian-fallon-painkillers-album-new-2016.png

Essentially a new Gaslight Anthem album but with more acoustic guitar and that is fine by me. This thing is just so light and catchy and the production is stupidly good. I can listen to this album on repeat foe hours without even noticing. It really snuck up on ke.
Check out: A Wonderful Life

10. PUP | The Dream is Over
a3806482547_10.jpg

PUP are from right near where I live and I catch them live all the time and their live show is insane. However, their first album didn't capture that energy fully. This one does. PUP is blowing up finally and I couldn't be happier. This record slays and deserves all the success it can get.
Check out: DVP

11. Descendents | Hypercaffium Spazzinate

12. Thrice | To Be Everywhere is to be Nowhere

13. Every Time I Die | Low Teens

14. Chance the Rapper | Coloring Book

15. The Bouncing Souls | Simplicity

16. Death By Stereo | Just Like You'd Leave Us, We've Left You for Dead

17. Kendrick Lamar | untitled.unmastered

18. Chris Farren | Can't Die

19. Frank Ocean | Blonde

20. Useless ID | State is Burning

Subbed! I'll post mine a bit later. Going to be a really hard year to judge. I swear every time I pull up my list.

Damn, I don't think I could even do 50 if this 2014 or 2015. You must go real hard. I might have sort of listened to 50 in a year before not 50 I like enough to rank.

50 ain't shit. My list is like 170 I think. Top 50 will all be things I really like.

Damn, what do you just listen to music all day everyday? 50 sounds like a lot considering most people in here aren't going past 10.

I listen to a lot and I almost solely seek out new music from the current year so it starts to add up quickly. I do graphic design for a living so I play music while I work.

I usually listen around 4 hours a day I would guess, more on the weekends. So reaching 50 albums that I really like isn't too hard. The one I posted I still had to cut off some really good albums.

It'll probably be a couple of weeks before I have my list totally sorted and ready to go. I think I'm a masochist.

15 | Japanese Breakfast | In Heaven

Album title is Psychopomp. Just want to make sure it gets the points it deserves!

Damn, what do you just listen to music all day everyday? 50 sounds like a lot considering most people in here aren't going past 10.

I usually do a top 100, which I think is reasonably since I listened to over 250 albums this year. Even then it's still really hard to narrow it down. And no, I don't have a life lol

50 is like the minimum amount of new albums I listen to each year lol

That's why I'm surprised when I see super short lists. People either don't like anything or just listen to old stuff haha
