Beatmania IIDX Community Thread: Deluxe Sound Sensation

We generally don't talk about piracy here, even for things as old as this. Tis against the site TOS and will get you banned. I'd edit that post out if I were you.

Fair enough. FWIW I don't pirate (modded ps2 was done ~4 years ago for my import of kh2fm) but like, is there any reasonable method to actually obtain IIDX games, or "not really".

And iirc it's not piracy talk or emulators or such as a topic that's banned on GAF, but posting torrent links and going "lol I'm just going to pirate that shit" will eat you a ban. I was moreso asking if I was SOL and running into a moral dilemma or if there was a way to obtain them for not obscene prices, rip. Alternatively, could git gud on the US one then play it at an arcade, hm

A lot of the old PS2 versions go for cheap. They'll get pricier, though.

Meanwhile, Empress seems to be going for $100+ on eBay (which makes sense considering it was the final game + contains another disc with 98 previous songs). DJ Troopers seems to be going for around $70ish, with Gold being around $50-$70.

The newer the game, the more expensive it is.

there's plenty of BMS files out there that are free to grab and play in a simulator like lunatic rave 2. just gotta get a USB adapter for your controller. it's if you wanna play official konami stuff where things get more shaky

but rave cannon is objectively better

peace, love, unity, respect. the four elements of speed rave.

I dunno, that one was cool, but I always liked the remix of Yell Dead Cell which was acutally from MGS2.. the other one was acutally from MGS since MGS2 hadn't been released yet at the time.

whoops i totally thought the theme didn't even appear in a game until MGS2. shows how much i know about the series lol

Funny about that. Last I recall, Empress was $150+ on the cheap side. It was $80 something new when I bought it, but I finally bit the bullet(and glad I did).

Part of me wants to get 10th & older for completion sake, but then I remember that most of the songs that I care about are pretty much already on 11 through 16 as revivals or on the bonus Empress disc. I'd basically be rebuying songs I already own.

Also damn, really glad I got said games when they were new, can't believe how much some of those go for nowadays, especially Empress, but I guess Konami didn't print a lot if it was the last console release.

>newer more expensive
THIS IS SO ILLOGICAL
My guess is as the series went on, sales weren't as strong, which would explain why after 16/Empress (which I should mention came out THREE YEARS AFTER THE PS3 LAUNCH), there hasn't been a console release since & they did that bonus disc that's basically a "best of" compilation. Heck, 12th/Happy Sky came out a month after the PS3 launch.

We're on the 24th arcade game, they've skipped out on releasing 8 games for consoles. I still wish for just a hub game, then each style is a DLC pack.

24th is SINOBUZ. There was also that one on PC that came out last year that costs about 1600 yen per month, but I don't know much about it.

The older games had larger print runs, and I think Konami ended the console releases with Empress due to a combination of PS2 support winding down and the arcade cabinets moving to a per-play fee structure (although that didn't fully happen until Tricoro, if I remember correctly). So with previous releases they would sell the kits and that was the end of that, but now releasing arcade content elsewhere can result in negatively impacting arcade revenues even if it's years after the fact (although there's got to be some inflection point, as they still do mobile releases for jubeat and Reflec Beat and there's also IIDX Infitias).

And honestly, $100 for Empress CS is actually fairly low -- I remember seeing it go for $200 or so on a fairly regular basis.

Just be aware that anything before IIDX Distorted CS (or thereabouts?) is going to be completely unplayable on anything other than a CRT, as the older releases had no display lag adjustment to speak of.

Luckily for Konami, INFINITAS doesn't eat into their arcade market because it's apologetically awful.

Off-topic, I wish this was a Bemani OT so we could talk about Pop'n Music more. :(

Bah, Distorted is probably the start of my favorite styles (I think DJ Troopers is my favorite, with Empress & Gold not far behind), but at least I know now that half of my games will still work on my HDTV.

i'd imagine they could maintain a pretty healthy CS environment if the turnaround between arcade release and CS release wasn't too-too long and they had a decent amount of CS exclusives (even if they're just crossovers or something). they could even use the song pack model like their mobile games if they consider that more suitable.

meanwhile infinitas is on resort anthem and the single exclusive is a long version! oops!

i'd totally rant about the past couple pop'n releases talk about pop'n if there was a thread

Happy Sky introduced display/timing options, so you should be good on 12 (including DistorteD) and above.

I just bought a cabinet with 18 Sengoku Retsuden that will be here in March, so I know i'll be dying to talk more about Pop'n around then.

Maybe wait on Random, as it might give you some very awkward note combinations if you're still learning how to play.

Phew, alright. Guess Red is the only one that won't work on my HDTV, but honestly, that's fine. Despite being my first import title, I don't think it's held up as well. Though I have noticed it helps playing as many songs as you can so you can learn new patterns & gives you more ways to practice. Plus it was fun going back to a previous game & realizing your skills have improved when you clear songs you previously had trouble with.

so do i use random

im so bad :x
I would recommend against it, personally. I think in the early difficulties, especially below 7s, it's important to learn the songs the way they are.

The only modifiers i'd recommend at any level are speed mods and sudden/sudden+ (even this can wait).

Oh, big tip! Get used to using as many fingers as you can. I'm trying to teach myself to use my ring fingers now and it's really hard after years of only playing with thumb/pointer/middles.

random is for people like me (even though i don't use it i know i should) who are breaking in to very high skill songs and need to be able to adapt to super complex patterns

unless you're playing 9+ don't bother

DJMAX player here, what is the best beatmania entry for newcomers? There is PC versions?

if you wanna give it a go for free I can help you get BMS (beatmania emulator, pc) set up, there's a yearly song competition so there's lots of play if you want to get a feel for the game

otherwise you're gonna need to get a ps2 and import, I would say anything 12-16 is fine, my personal preferences are 14 (gold) and 15 (dj troopers)

so anyways, anyone else been playing sinobuz? I've been tripping to R1 occasionally and I managed to lamp the sinobuz A folder a few weeks back
Cx7HvpNWIAEPxoq.jpg

only clears i'm missing from the songs i have (haven't finished the event yet) are sarutobi champion
goddamn bpm gimmics
and HADES
FUCK THE ENDING

tracklist is fire, easily the best since tricoro; best song is

I uhh
scratch with my pinky
and then thumb/pointer/middle and on the far right the outside part of my hand similar to my pinky.

I haven't played much more than an hour and a half though, just got it yesterday finally <_>

Sheesh, the last new style I played was Lincle when I was in Tokyo in April, and I barely got to try the new stuff since I was already like four mixes behind and mostly played favorites from those styles.

that is a perfectly acceptable hand position

don't let anyone dilute you into thinking that hand position is the end all be all though, I'm a literal mess and play freeform half the time and I'm clearing midrange 12's

I've been playing six years and I'm just 10th dan, if you're in a hurry to truly git good you best temper your expectations.

Play a little bit every day instead of huge sessions, you'll probably get more from that.

The fact you're using your pinky to scratch is already a good thing, you need all the fingers you can. Took me a while to learn/get used to using just the pinky compared to the entire hand.

and then one day you'll come full circle and realize that you need to full hand scratch because songs like re:bouncekiller exist and the only god that can save you is your right hand being good enough for 7 keys so you can scratch 24ths at 143 bpm
i lament as i resent the 60% finish i got that goddamn song earlier today

I play so infrequently that I tend to atrophy in skill during breaks :( I only just re-earned 5th dan this week, which is still below my personal best (6th dan in tricoro, even though I actually skipped tricoro 5th dan lol).

I agree with this. I don't mean you should learn a specific hand position, but make sure you don't lock yourself into thinking that key 1 and 2 can only be hit by your left thumb (or whatever rules you set for yourself). I got stuck at 7/8s for a long time because I refused to change it up.

I need to head to Round 1 soon and figure out what Dan I am these days. I would guess 4 even though i've been playing over a decade. :(

I need to see what Dan level I am in each game. I remember getting a decent ways in, but usually would get stuck around halfway because of one song that had an annoying end part.

It's a mode where you play 4 pre-determined songs on set difficulties which is kind of used as a way to determine how good you are. "dan" is basically "rank", with 10-dan being the hardest set of songs on their hardest difficulty.

Usually, you can unlock custom stuff for your UI like note splashes (the effect when you hit a note successfully) or special result screen pictures that you can see in the gallery.

whos dan
whats a dan

Every game has something called "class" mode which is a system for ranking players

If you know how martial arts belts work then congrats, you mostly already understand this

The ranks start at 7th kyu (white belt) and once you hit 1st kyu, the next rank is 1st dan (first degree black belt). That continues until 10th dan, and until COPULA there was only one rank beyond that, but now one must complete chuuden(lit. "mid way", it was added as a stepping stone because the gap between 10th and kaiden is notoriously large) and then kaiden (the final rank, lit. "initiate into an art")

Each one of these is a course of four songs that varies from version to version, played with a special version of the hard guage, all you have to do is keep the gauge from reaching zero through all four songs (it carries from song to song) and you earn the rank

I've spent like.,,..a decade being gatekept by either The Safari (7th Dan) or Gigadelic (8th Dan).
I have never cleared Gigadelic SPH.
