Deep Fear is totally playable in Japanese. Lots of spoiler free walkthroughs out there of you get stuck. Not a difficult game by any means.

^hype!

so i'm playing Shining Force III: Scenario 2 with the fan translation, right? and man, what a translation effort it is!

so i was running an old ass version (like 2 or 3 i wanna say) and in an early town, text started skipping & a slight error or two had shown themselves, so i hit up Shining Force Central (awesome community, wish i'd get approved there!), and not only are they on version 18(!), they literally have a program that lets you pop your disc into your PC, it grabs the files & patches them and makes you a bin/cue file to burn! it's impressive enough that the effort has gone on thus far (and the changelog shows some great stuff that was done too), but they literally couldn't have made this any easier. i'm just so impressed with their efforts, wish they had a tip jar!

related: i should see if we have a shining force community thread here on GAF!

Both of those are probably the 3D games that are closest between the two systems. Unless comparing non-direct ports like Dead or Alive.

And for me it was anything to avoid that horrible segmented dpad (though of course now I have a Saturn controller for PS...)

Probably already discussed but what's the overall consensus with Resident Evil on Saturn. Better than the PS1 version?

Mostly worse.
Played it only recently for the first time on Saturn, played it countless times on PS1. It's a completely fine port, not the slowdown mess Tomb Raider is for instance. Absolutely a safe buy if you want the original experience of RE1 vanilla (aka no auto-aim). Backgrounds look nice and sharp on a CRT using RGB scart!

The people at Shining Force are phenomenal. I used to post there years back but got too busy with graduate school and haven't really been back. I think I also got in a couple arguments with people in off-topic.

The amount of work they've put into preserving and translating the games should be celebrated though. The only complaint I really have is that they gave me a reason to not focus as much on studying Japanese.

Early in Shining the Holy Ark, you meet one of the main baddies in the town of Enrich. The first thing she does is kill a puppy. I can't think of many games that more explicitly say "this is a bad guy" than that.

for real, i gotta try to sign up there again when im done just to say thank you, back when i was sour grapes about the saturn i told myself it was so shitty that SF would never see a proper ending out here, and now it does!

Enable the "CC" button before playing. I hope you guys enjoyed these. This is probably the last one for a long, long time.

oh man, needed this today - thanks so much!

That's because everyone already has a DVD player now!

But in seriousness, I'm kinda surprised too. I'm guessing because a lot of Americans bought it to play games like Madden, which don't really hold up in the nostalgia department?

^it's been a minute, but that's a real gem

the best part about Shining Force III scenario 2 translations is seeing the battle/dialogue from the other side. i loved when Nier & others did this, this was brilliant for that gen...just sucks when your protag is silent (...) but you see what the one from the last game actually said! and now you're like oh shit what did prince Median say when we ran into him in part 1 again? man dudes are chatty when they're NPCs

like every time i mention an RPG or some other shit my man mike comes in and drops a fighter and gets way more replies

I GET IT Y'ALL, CAMP WEEABO IS EXPENSIVE but it's a side of the saturn too (;_;)

much love mike, i still need to unlock pepsiman

LOL. Sorry man I wasn't even intentionally doing that!

The only "weeb" game I have is Sakura Taisen. Still need to get around to playing that, but gonna be annoying having to use a translator.

see dudes like cj_iwakura adore sakura taisen, i've yet to play any of em but that consistent love has always made me curious about that series

Yeah it's funny it rarely gets mentioned here even though it was probably the Saturn's biggest series outside of Virtua Fighter.

Oh and I'll probably import Magic Knight Rayearth soon.

Haha yeah, I wish they hadn't been silent as protagonists. It felt a bit weird. But yeah it was pretty ahead of its time with this save-transfer feature and multiple POV story!

That's one of my favorite things about SF3. It really makes me want to replay them over and over. It also makes me hate the parts where the leaders aren't together. But with enough interaction you can create a voice for them and fill in what you think they might say.

haha this is 100% what ive been doing, i make them cuss a lot in my head too

I'm getting some choppy lines with SSF. What's causing this?

tumblr_oicae50Aho1slig2vo1_1280.gif
The last version of SSF is kinda bad, IMO. Going even one revision earlier clears up a lot of these "random lines not rendering" issues for me.

It's been a GOOD while since the last SSF revision...

Give the mednafen sega saturn core a go in retroarch, far less input lag than ssf and very accurate. Probably more taxing on the cpu than ssf but should be the go to for emulation, no need to mount discs etc either. Feel free to drop me a pm in you need a hand with setting it up.

For anyone who might be looking for them, I've moved all the Segata Sanshiro videos under one playlist.

All the other recent translated videos have been placed under the Sega Saturn Media playlist.

If I ever find another volunteer translator or can afford to pay one, I've still got a bunch of other great stuff filed away. Interviews with Kondo on PD Zwei, Mizuguchi on Sega Rally, Naka on NiGHTS, a number of things on Kenji Eno, office tours of Sega, WARP, KAZe, Capcom, Compile, Game Arts, etc. Maybe some day!

Yeah, I already know about it. Tried Die Hard Arcade in it in RetroArch; wasn't too fond of the non-integer nearest-neighbor upscale, but it seemed okay otherwise?

So Panzer Dragoon Saga is awesome, ya?

Has anybody emulated it and wound up being unable to play the Guardian Dragon fight? Does anyone know a workaround?

I really need a better CPU. My system can't handle Mednafen. I still hope to see strides with Yabause, I like its Open GL mode when it works.

anything different about sega rally netlink edition?

The price?

[edit]

Compared to the original US release, netlink and 3D controller support, slightly better graphics. The original EU and JP releases had the graphics, and the Japanese Plus added support for the 3D controller.

3D controller support isn't really interesting imo. The port was designed for digital inputs, analogue doesn't add anything, except maybe jittery controls. I didn't like it at all.

If you can play imports, don't bother with either American release. The cheap one was rushed and the expensive one is expensive. Get a Japanese disc, everything is in English like every other SEGA arcade conversion. If you can't play imports, the difference between US and JP are minutes and the gameplay is intact = it's still a fantastic game. Don't get the PAL one unless you're in PAL land playing on a PAL console. It's optimised, and well optimised: the additional scan lines show more of the scenery and the timing is identical to the 60Hz version, but the bottom of the screen will be cut on a 60Hz console.

Been grabbing a few Saturn games since they are cheap, always wanted them, and LOVE the cover art for a lot of them (X-Men Children of the atom -woah-)

but...

I don't own a Saturn haha.

What's the best emulator at the moment for a Windows 10 system, i5, 1070 ect PC. And what are the things I should know before buying a Saturn these days? talking potential hardware issues to look out for, accessories I would be better off having. Are there versions of the console to avoid? and so on.

Been eyeing the one at the used shop for a solid year now (live in Japan.) Always wanted a Saturn as a kid but never got it. Fill me with info Saturn gaf!
