Steam Winter Sale 2016 thread of hoping for better deals elsewhere

Picked up Doom and Abzu on the final night...

Also bought and finished Regency Solitaire. Highly recommended, and it's only a few bucks. I guess it's like Golf solitaire or something like that (according to my SO)?

Any game that is like souls and has online CoOp?

Err... Necropolis kinda? I hear its still a bit rough even after the recent update tho.

Salt and Sanctuary has coop and its dark souls like (but 2d)

I haven't played it, but I've come across Necropolis a few times, which seems to fit the 'co-op focused Souls' descriptor. The Brutal Edition seems to be a significant patch that has improved a flawed base game, and even though most recent reviews are positive I'd do a bit more research to see exactly how the coop functions, because a lot of the complaints still seem to be centered around the wonky way the game handles saves, leveling, and coop.

Okay, last purchase time. Do I get:

  1. The Witness (I love Myst-like games)
  2. Grim Dawn (Diablo 3 is finally dead to me, and I NEED a replacement that's not PoE)
  3. Slime Rancher (It's cute and is sitting at Overwhelmingly Positive, I'm curious now)
  4. Overcooked (Would probably only play this single player, but may pull my gf in to try)
  5. Curious Expedition (I've heard good things and like the style)

Do not do not do not do not buy Overcooked to play single player, it's couch co-op at its finest and isn't going to be fun by yourself.

What are other western visual novels besides VA-11 HALL-A and We Know The Devil? Any others with more realistic art akin to The Silver Case?

I already got VA-11, thinking of getting We Know The Devil and either House of Fata Morgana or Silver Case, to get into visual novels

Christine Love's stuff, particularly Ladykiller in a Bind and Analogue A Hate Story (though I prefer Digital, which isn't a VN)

Anybody here lives in Japan? I'd like some help getting The Sims 3 bundle, which is around 4$ in the japanese steam store.

Nah, SteamDB doesn't calculate regional bundle prices correctly.

SteamDB assumes bundles contain same subids in every region, which isn't true at all.
This means they show much lower price if there's regional packages in use.

It's actually unavailable in Japan, as The Sims 3 isn't sold there.

Is Dark Soul 3 the worse PC port of the three games? Even after turning lighting to low and telling Windows to free up more RAM (because apparently DS3 needs a fuckton of RAM?), I'm still getting crashes and straight up hard locks where I can't do anything but signout/signin or restart my computer. Does anyone have any ideas on how to alleviate these issues beyond maybe rolling back drivers? Luckily none of these crashes/freezes have happened at critical moments butt hanks to the server shit, just starting up the game is grating.

I have this in my cart:

FFIX

Half Genie Hero

also thinking about throwing in VA-11 HALL-A

I've also got Trillion Deluxe Edition in my Indie Gala cart... I've only got 10 hours to make a decision.

The Witness is probably the best designed game of the last two decades. I have a low opinion of gamers who don't appreciate it. You level your mind up. It is insane.

Decided on making some expensive retro gaming purchases because I'm stupid. Anyway, ended up really narrowing down my purchase list to Satellite Reign, Downwell And Pixeljunk Shooter Ultimate. I'll get either Tesla Effect or Stealth Bastard Deluxe Bundle to finish off this list. Undecided though..

Not sure if serious.. I mean, it's just a mediocre puzzle game with a walking simulator with fancy graphics thrown in as enjoyable filler between levels.. Feel free to have a low opinion of me if you will, but I just don't "get" what you "got" from the game.

I got a gift card as a present after making my initial purchases. Grabbed Stardew Valley and Telltale Batman. I played Stardew Valley for six hours straight.

Va-11 Hall-A or The Silver Case?
va11111111halla is really good, even if you're like me and don't like visual novels there's just a great style to that game that makes it really good. the soundtrack and the pixelart is so fucking great and the characters are all likeable and u have a cool cat and you can decorate your room

i have some disagreements with its design but it really is a brilliant game

my #1 since i beat it and it hasn't changed since

It's tied with Stephen's Sausage Roll. 2016 was an amazing year for puzzlers
i really want to try that out

i heard it's kind of super frustrating tho, idk if i'll enjoy that

In that case, how I can tell where it's actually the cheapest?

I do not own it and did not play it, but having watched lets plays, the whole thing seems to get very boring after you do the same puzzle the first dozen times..
let me assure you it's not

first it's not the same puzzle a dozen times, there's many different variations on the core panel maze mechanic that gets into really wild shit

and i mean really crazy stuff

and second this is a game that the beauty lies in actually playing it. there's a process in which you discover and master the game's mechanics that it's tremendously absorbing to the point of obsession. it's fantastic and incredibly rewarding and when you find yourself solving with else the puzzles that felt insurmountable i found there to be a bit of a transcendent state thing going on in a way i've never had with any other game before

and the game knows it and rewards you for it in an extremely clever way that you already ruined for yourself by watching other people play it

this may all sound very pretentious and it kind of is but that's truly how the game felt for me

and i feel you're making a really strong statement and getting yourself in an argument for a game that you haven't personally played and have no stakes in

probably not the wisest of ideas!

The Witness was fantastic. I thought it would just be line puzzles and was skeptical pre release but it was much more than that. The way the island is so so meticulously designed with perspective, colors, sound, etc. Really blew my mind, the graphics were utterly gorgeous the whole time at 4K. I was really glad I bought it and still remember fondly that experience playing The Witness as a personal experience of challenge I went through back then, more than just a normal game.

Probably Obduction, and I bought that day one. :)

Witness is puzzles on an island with secrets. I'm good with calling that close enough to Myst to pique my interest.

Have you tried Quern - Undying Thoughts? http://store.steampowered.com/app/512790/

It's good and mostly free of "wait, THAT was what I was supposed to do??? Who the hell came up with this crap" moments. To me, that's the most important characteristic in a myst-like game (I pride myself on having beaten Riven + Obduction without any external help). I really hate when games have puzzles like in Deponia or ASA: A space adventure.

Joke post?

The Witness is not a game for everyone, not everyone has to like it, but there's nothing mediocre about the game whatsoever.

geeze, is almost like you lost a vital part of the experience by having someone solving the puzzles for you or something ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Ah man. You screwed yourself out of an amazing experience. Like I said, you literally level yourself, as a human being and not a player in the game, up. You can tackle everything from the beginning but you can't because your mind is still level 1. As you go through the game, you start to figure it all out. Then you get to be OP and solve whatever the game throws at you. Maybe.

The Witness is sheer genius and a master class in game design. Everything is accessible but because you yourself are weak, you cannot solve it until you gain XP. Absolutely insane.

aka I have no idea what i'm talking about.

I don't own many things but I can judge their benefits just the same, no need to be anal about it. I came out and said my opinion is not based on gameplay, but watching it. That doesn't mean I'm not entitled to it.

geeze, is almost like you lost a vital part of the experience by having someone solving the puzzles for you or something ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Eh.. They were not interesting to me in the first place, to be honest - I wouldn't have enjoyed them if I solved them. That was my point. I'll just say it wasn't for me, and leave it at that.

Pretty happy I was able to stick with my first purchase a week or so ago with the Steam sale and haven't picked up anything else that I had a minor urge to get.
Got two Assassin's Creed games (Rogue and Unity) and Ori and the Blind Forest.

Almost broke down and got DOOM and the Witcher 3 DLCs, but I'm going to wait until after I upgrade my PC to get into those games (hopefully by the summer sale).

I usually go crazy with PC since console sales aren't that great, but I was impressed enough this year to buy a decent spread of games across XB1 and PS4 in addition to my PC.

Nominations for DLC and Early Access, that's an interesting twist. Time for Battle Brothers to shine (or get robbed).

For Battle Brothers to have any chances it would have to be quality only vote, not popularity + quality combined. That's why it's Uncharted 4 and Overwatch that win most of the awards that are voted by the public, they sold more than other games at their quality level.

That's also why I'm really surprised that Infinite Warfare and Far Cry Primal didn't make it to top 50 at Eurogamer. People really wanted to forget those games quickly even though they sold plenty of copies. Usually just selling enough copies gets you to a top 50 list.

Well this was the first time I felt the need to refund a game through Steam, and that game was Watch_dogs. I could not get the audio to work in the game. The audio does work while in the main menu, but as soon as I start a new game/continue, silence. No music, no sound effects, no voices, zilch.

While trying to find a solution to fix the issue, I come to find out that others have also complained about this issue since around the date of this game's release! And of course, there's no real solution to fix the problem. it seems that the game has a xaudio2 bug that causes the game to not play audio in (some?) surround sound setups. Some people were claiming that switching to stereo would finally make the game play audio (which to me is not a good solution). however, even when I changed my setup to stereo, the game still refused to play any audio while in game (and that's through optical, HDMI, and USB headphones). So I ended up asking for a refund.

Now I'm wary of buying any new Ubisoft titles, since I've read that people have been having this same issue with other newer Ubisoft games.

Other than Christine Love's stuff, I can vouch for these:

But you should really start with The House in Fata Morgana. Really.

Just use the refund option for any other Ubisoft game that have this issue for you.
