ArsTechnica: Hackers unlock NES Classic, upload new games via USB cable

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
After 90 I started getting random C8 errors.
I've pruned it down to 88 and had no issues, I figure I'm hitting the threshold though.
That being said, I'm happy with where these developments have gotten us, the only other thing I'd want is that seizure protection modded out. Ruins Ninja Gaiden 2, any time you get a Cross (Not Cross/Boomerang) in CV1/3 and even the title screen of Bump N Jump.

Oh that's what that is. Yeah, it's pretty annoying but it's kinda cool in a like retro psychedelic way.

I hit exactly 88 myself...However I forgot one box art because I was going to do it manually since the Google search built in didn't work for it. LOL My OCD is killing me, is it possible to fix with a reflash? :)

Yup, I've loaded mine with games three times now.

I wonder if it will crash with 89 games.

Hey, I sent you a DM about this, but can you test Battletoads again? It crashes on level 2 on mine.

Mine also crashes on Level 2.

Does it mess up any save states when you reflash? And when you guys say "64" or "88", is that with or without the original 30?

I own a Raspberry Pi and a HTPC, and I think the NES mini is great. Much easier, and cheaper than a pi + case + controller.
Considering the Pi can emulate a multitude of systems I'd say a one-stop-shop like the Pi with bluetooth, wifi, multi-boot to whatever OS/function you want, etc - is a much cheaper option.

Any word on how Splatterhouse or Sweet Home run?

I'm really thinking of waiting this out so a list can be compiled of all the working/non-working games.

So far all the Japanese games I tried such as Kid Dracula, Gradius 2 and Splatterhouse aren't compatible due to Mapper limitations. :(

Anyone figure out how to properly retitle the Mega Man games?

Recca doesn't play nice with the seizure stuff either, bummer.

What if you used Roman numerals?

I'm fixing mine now, don't use Roman Numerals, Mega Man 2 stock uses 2.
You'll also want to copy ™, or hit ALT+0153 to make the TM. That's what throws it off.

i think that's to do with having characters in the rom name that it doesn't like.

On boot, yeah. Recca caused that until I took out the ' but I had Kung Fu loaded and it would load sometimes, and sometimes throw C8.

Anyways, i'm attempting to pack in as many low size roms as i can to see if there's a clear limit

I solved the Mega Man numbers problem by using Roman numerals for 4-6; no big deal, and with the TM thing properly included in each title they sort correctly.

Also beware of lower case Js - those won't display on the Classic for some reason. Make those games all caps (though you won't be able to fit subtitles in the interface for the TMNT games in all caps.)

Nice, going to do that now

1943 shows as '3 - The Battle of Midway' for me :/

yup - i just dumped a load of Roms onto it

187 games now installed but nothing runs - so i guess we're probably bound by the GUI array or something...

hey ho.

TBQH I don't think there's even 70 NES games truly worth playing anyway.

include FC in that and you'll easily burst 70 games.

So has anyone who attempted this in this thread actually bricked their NES Classic?

Hard to brick it when the tools are there to do it properly ;)

Ha, good eye. I'm missing lowercase j's too. Weird!

I'm just trying to think of reasons here, but is it possible these errors occur because the game tries to match the edited title name with the title found in the ROM itself, and when unmatched it throws out an error?

SNES on the other hand...

I have exactly 90 NES games plus a few stragglers to boot on here...Wasn't too bad once you find a list, then again, I still own my old carts from 30 years ago too. SNES would actually be harder for me since I was more of a Genesis fan even though I owned all of them at launch.

Then again, at the end of the day, I'm a Commodore 64 guy. :)

But as for NES, I have games such as Popeye and Donkey Kong 3 on there...good times.

I'm trying to do it on a second NES (family member), but I'm getting the failed to read from pipe when I try to dump kernel again. Anyone do two different NES classics from the same machine?

Never mind, I think it worked when I deleted (moved) my old dump out of the dump folder.

Remember guys, this is only the *start*.

The teardowns revealed that the NES classic has an AllWinner R16 SoC.

That's a Quad core Cortex A7 with a Mali400.

ARM CPU, sure, but Double the GFLOPS of the Wii.

Nintendo could make an SNES, N64 and Camecube Mini with exactly the same hardware. All they'd have to do was upgrade the NAND.

Hacking wise, it would be possible to get the thing running Dolphin.
This would never run GameCube games at anywhere near reasonable performance levels, even at 480p.

I own quite a few NES sports games, and IMO NES is an insanely good console for those. It gets overlooked because of how great other consoles were in that area (Genesis, being a brief direct competitor, overshadowed it).

But yeah, tonight I added all my sports games: Baseball Stars, Bases Loaded, TSB, Blades of Steel, Nintendo World Cup, Tecmo Soccer, Tecmo NBA, Cyberball, RBI Baseball, Tecmo Wrestling, and a TSB with updated rosters for good measure.

So good.

Maybe this could be done with ROMs of multi-game carts?

I see, but the limitation is from the UI apparently and not the NES Classic's capacity to store more games. If I read you correctly, you would have ROMs with multi-games, but the 61st game and everything afterwards would not be displayed.

DCharlie

And even i am moderately surprised
nope - the roms are displayed for me, but they just aren't running ... i think?!

Anyways, trying some of the XX-in-1s that seem to have mapper support now....

DCharlie

And even i am moderately surprised
yeah, so 76-in-1 loads but trying to start a game dumps you back to the menu screen.

Reduced back to 78 games and everything is working again too.

I'm almost tempted to just buy a Famicom Mini and do this, since it doesn't seem like the NES Classic is ever going to be easy to get at retail.
