ArsTechnica: Hackers unlock NES Classic, upload new games via USB cable

And even i am moderately surprised
yeah, so the kids sat playing Tetris on the Hackicom Mini , mother in law popped in and sat watching and recalled how she remembered my wife as a youngster playing the game.

Eldest son talks smack about how my wife was probably terrible at Tetris after which she administered a horrific lesson in how you do Tetris correctly accompanied with a lecture in what will happen if my son tries to take her on in any game within the house.

Apparently there's going to be a Halo show down today - in which my wife has promised she'll deliver an epic smackdown without firing a shot.

This alone made the price of the Famicom Mini worth every yen.

Anyways, Quite interested in establishing a "Best of ! 30 essential additions" and a "Hidden Gems ! 30 surprises you might not know about" NES/FC comparisons

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Hakchi 2.02 released

Just from looking at it, it seems this release allows you to set the number of players as well as whether or not they're simultaneous - I think this is just for the UI to change the color of the "2P" icon.

It appears a lot of fixes were made to the process of actually flashing the custom kernel file, so those that had errors with the previous version might find this version useful.

It's just another menu option.

The thing to take care with is probably just making sure you have multiple backups of the original kernel.

The whole thing looks simple but convincing the Mrs's is another story. Lol

She's certain I'll brick it and we'll not be able to get another one.

re: bricking worries -

if you take a dump of the Kernel (which it forces you to do) then if you screw something up (which i did) then tool gives you the option to rebuild the original kernel meaning you have a back up.

I mean - you might be able to completely screw up the unit so you loose the USB attachment mode - but it would seem hard to do.

Like i say - i've got the unit to the point it would just error out without starting and was able to easily recover.

Was able to install an additional 36 games on mine using the hakchi2 tool without any issues.
Is there any way to remove a specific game from the original 30 using hakchi (I want to get rid of punch out)

Could you remove all 30 and add back the other 29?

Yeah I am considering checking off that original 30 option and manually installing them individually...I want to swap out for Mike Tyson AND get rid of a few games such as Final Fantasy to free up a few more slots as well.

Thing is that the screensaver function cycles through those 30 games and I don't know what that would do to that feature.

I keep following the instructions here, but get a "failed to write to pipe"' error when I do to dump the kernel. I open hakchi, select "upload selected games," follow the instructions to plug in console via usb, hold reset, push power, and let go of reset. I hear a chime and a progress bar starts, then the error warning. Am I doing something wrong?

So happy with this. Got this working and added a bunch of games and got my nes wireless controller from amazon. Can play everything across the living room now- that thing is great too- press down and select and it resets the system so I don't have to push the button in the console- makes having this many games much much nicer now.

Which one is that? Seems like a worthwhile investment.

I wonder if it's possible to inject additional emulators in there? I know the processor is more than capable.

Why? One of the main points of this is that it's using a Nintendo developed emulator and the use of the controller (D-Pad, B, A, Start, Select). Might as well go with the previously mentioned and heralded tasty Pi device thing.

So this should also work on the Famicom Mini, right?

I tried to run Cluster’s Method on my Famicom Mini and although every single step seems to go fine and no errors occur, when I hook it up to my TV none of the new games show up...

Any ideas what I might be doing wrong?

Hakchi2 2.05 now includes FDS support. Cluster says the NES Mini already has the bios necessary to run it.

Loaded Metroid FDS, ran perfectly, even had the extra synth.

Have you tried waiting at least 10 seconds after you're done before disconnecting?

Oh, hell yes!

VS. Excitebike here I come!

BTW, how does the disk swapping work?

Or you think they would leave a backdoor in because such a "feature" might increase sales?

Knowing Nintendo, no, not really. They always prioritize the security of their hardware and software over the interests of the hacking/modding/emu communities, which they actively disdain.

Besides, NES Mini sold more than they could make even before the hack.

Anyone any idea how to make the FDS covers not distort when hakchi uploads them? The upload tool seems to stretch them vertically.

Yep, doesn't make a difference.

It's really weird since every step goes perfectly; the games just don't show up on the console. I guess it's better than accidentally bricking it though ;)
