GoNintendo: "Getting the switch at gamestop might be a bit of a difficult endeavor"

I feel Nintendo is suffering from a bad case of burned fingers. They can't afford to have stock sitting unsold at stores. It hurt them a lot with the 3DS initially, before that took off, and it hurt them more with the Wii U. They need to drive interest in their new system every way possible and initial limited availability is an old stand by to drive hype for a product. This isn't incompetence, this is a tactical decision and I can't begrudge them pulling every trick to build interest and one hopes momentum for the Switch. If the Switch fails, you can bet Nintendo as a company will be forced to take a new direction and no, I don't think going third party is on the top of their Plan B list.

As I suspected. Nintendo's going to play the manufactured shortage game like they're doing with the Mini NES.

They'll be able to create hysteria among Nintendo fans which will spill over to people who weren't planning on getting one, but better do so because they're sought after. Sure beats the embarrassment of Wii U/3DS systems sitting on shelves at that their launches.

If this is the game they are playing especially for a global launch they are fucking stupid. Like they need to sell as many of these as possible.
And if I can't go into gamestop, or best buy on Firday 13 and preorder because they have low stock already I'm fucking done before I even started.

The fact that I'v held out on Nintendo hardware for so long is because there hasn't been anything IMHO hardware wise worth getting. This device has my interest and I want to play games I missed out on from the Wii U. But seriously their treatment of the mini which I wanted, and now this if this is true along with their issues they had with Amiibo's is complete bullshit.
They seem either incapable or just ignorant to the demand now for such products. Is this was only why we heard their projections for how many they could produce for the year was only 10m?

This seriously boggles my mind why they still do this shit, Why can't they actually get with the times and produce more than enough for demand. This isn't a Wii U situation, right now Nintendo as a company is on the rise brand wise, so it's going to sell. It's not like they are going to have the Issue Microsoft did with channel stuffing a console no-body wanted.

Eh, that's why preordering exists. I live in a small town, so I'm always number 1-4 on the list. Looks like it could be scalping season again, to the dismay of many on here.

I really have nothing positive to say about this. This is Nintendo poking for attention imo and I'm not feeding into this. This is just flexing muscles imo and while they have the right to do this...I'm not buying it. There's no way that after generations of this, Nintendo can't get down stock right. I don't think there's a company on earth anymore that as big as them in household name who underestimates their demand like this on purpose....not even apple who always has unprecedented demand. At this point it's whatever. I'm not going to fight and watch my computer all day to preorder and I'm not going out of my way to drive to a store to get a preorder only for them to play the lottery game. I don't have the time and this is part of the reason why I'm just done with Nintendo. This is soo lame....

Difference is their brand right now is hot again, people want this thing. Like it's the reason there are so many youtube videos, podcasts, and even regular news outlets talking about the company and the switch. Once they get the price out and it holds true to 249.99 this thing will be wanted by everyone.

Why would they purposely undership to gamestop? I see no reason to give them less than other stores.
Maybe it will be like the Wii. I'll preorder it and everyone online will tell me it won't sell out and I won't have a problem getting it on launch day, and then laugh as I get my secured preorder on launch and everyone waited for the second shipment to finally come in may.

This is pretty much how the launch of any major product goes. Not sure why Nintendo is at fault. They announced that they will have 2 millions u it's for launch.

I have not heard a single person mention the Switch in my daily life. It is hard to really see a good picture of the market when we are in the center of the bubble.

Demand, and they know gamestops have different things that stores do. Like my store was taking peoples names and numbers for when preorder's were live.

They want people to continue going into those stores that they are familiar with and getting updated when there's stock to preorder.

Gamestops are also smaller so they can only take so many orders as their back room can only hold so much not like bigger stores like BESTBUY who have a large warehouse in the back.

Guess your in the minority as news outlets like CNN and the such bring it up when they talk about their stock, the nes mini for holiday shopping, and the new super mario run game. Like you walk into the best buy where I live and tons of employees talking about it, some even feature the trailer in their gaming section.

Advertising has already been going on for this thing since launch trailer.

Your post history suggests to me that not only do you not have any interest in Nintendo products whatsoever, but that you may have an active disinterest.

Just saying.

Jesus Christ NOA, sort your shit out.

When listening to things like the NVC podcast and posts here, it's always complaining about availability, pre-order capability etc. and it's just shocking.

I have not had one issue here in the UK. Got the amiibo I wanted. Got the NES Classic Mini. Got everything I needed with no issues.

People like to praise Reggie but personally I feel he's a fucking twit.

Gamestop is my only real option to get this too. Fuck...

I will offer up any additional preorders I am able to secure. Managed to get 7 of the $99 3DS's and hooked up GAF. Will do the same for this if need be.

Nobody purposely underships. Nintendo wants to sell product. If pre-orders blow out the initial stock, then they'll probably work on ramping up manufacturing of more units.

Many retailers are a bit gun shy regarding Nintendo after the Wii U sat on shelves and didn't sell. Initial orders on Switch might be low in an attempt to avoid getting bit before they have an accurate picture of demand. Nobody wants to warehouse shit they can't sell, and that includes both retailers and Nintendo.

What are you talking about? Wii demand was higher than everyone expected and that over years. Nintendo increased Wii production shipments constantly and could not meet the unexpected demand. NES Mini has been undershipped like Wii, but that is likely because the stores preordered not many months in advanced because no one expected it to take up like this. Production shipments must be carefully planned and production factories must be reserved in advance.

Wii U and 3DS had been overshipped. You could always get them. If I remember correctly Nintendo said they expect 2mio Switch sold at launch period. That is reasonable but if the demand is higher there will be shortages. Nothing new and happens with many electronic devices, from apple to Sony to Samsung. I don't get why some people pretend that this is a "Nintendo thing".

The whole artifically shortages thing is completely nonsense.

Scaplers will beat everyone with bots.

There's no hard deadline coming up that consumers have to buy units for, outside of birthdays though. Scalping opportunities are inherently lower, outside of a somewhat unlikely wii type scenario where it is by far the hottest console on the planet that everybody must own.

The only one of recent that comes to mind is the iPhone 7 and Pixel. The iPhone has always been global but they definitely ship more than 2 million and since apple is much bigger that means that the stock is far larger in every store to cover that. Nintendo and Apple have just about the same brand recognition today than ever before so really and truly, they absolutely get a pass for that.

The pixel unlike the iPhone was only at Verizon and had an excuse to ship so few because people aren't that familiar with a Google Android phone. Sony and Microsoft always has this down without yet Nintendo after generations of this they are still only ships out this few system as if they aren't very self aware of their brand? Come on...I don't buy it at all.

Nintendo KNOWS people want this thing.....and they likely also know that 2 million will not cover it....but I feel like they chose to do this in purpose.

They'll be available at gamestop. Probably only as shitty overpriced bundles with garbage-ass PDP carrying cases, screen cleaners, and the two launch games no one wants.

I wonder how much of that shipment allotment is based on Gamestop's willingness to purchase hardware units.

Of course the narrative will be 'Nintendo underships because Nintendo', but remember that it's a two way street. Perhaps Gamestop doesn't want to get lost in the mire of a flop: see Vita and Wii U.

inb4 angry tweets and articles from game journalists *kek* about scarcity and how 'NINTENDO IS INFLATING DEMAND'. Also, dozens of Youtube videos.

I'm guessing this is more of a low overall shipments to every store due to manufacturing restrictions rather than them purposely shipping less to Game Stop. If the 2 million units for March WW figure holds that doesn't leave a whole lot for just NA. That isn't a lot for Japan either.

Since it's doomed if it costs more than 200$, there shouldn't be any problem to find one in store, right ?

Anyway, I'm glad I live in a country where I don't have to preorder shit to get them in stores at launch.

This as well - the margins of profit where scalpers operate can just as easily be the retailer themself 'scalping' with force bundling.

Do I win a prize for talking about my penis on the Internet???
Makes me wonder what Nintendos realistic launch sales projections are for Switch if they refuse to send even a modest amount of systems out so at least their core customers won't have to worry.

There's approximately no chance Nintendo is going to have sufficient stock. They will lose a lot of money to scalpers, but they don't seem to care.

Preorder early enough on Amazon should do the job, hopefully.

I start work at 10am, the same time our Gamestops open.

Can you pre-order over the phone at a Gamestop? Is pre-ordering online and having it shipped to a store the same priority-wise as pre-ordering in-store?

I'd preorder online somewhere if I decide to preorder. Leaning toward waiting as I'm trying to only buy/play one game at a time and Horizon and Mass Effect take precedent for me.

I wouldn't conflate the demand seen among folks on GAF with the demand among the general population.

It's not just GAF, you can see on various social medias that people are excited about the Switch. We're only talking about the first shipment here, so it will mostly be Nintendo fans and gamer enthusiasts, instead of the mass market at first.

Nintendo never learns.

People want to buy your shit, this forced scarcity only takes money out of your pockets.
Remember that Kimishima says that based on how people react to the Switch this month, they can increase their production orders for the launch month beyond 2 million. They're being overly cautious because of Wii U.

I will be putting my order in at Game on Friday. 8 mile hike into town and back with the dog. That's my day sorted!

Hopefully they aren't in short supply though.

So you can only preorder in-store? I've never preordered a console before so I'm not sure, but that's the impression I'm getting from this thread.
