So if all of it is true then where does Microsoft fit into the "Fuck platinum" scale?

Better or worse than capcom/sega? Id say decisively worse.

Oh man. I need to reserve judgement until proper stories get out but this is just bad vibes all around. I'm not forgiving Microsoft if this really turns out to just be them screwing PlatinumGames over

How is he not saying anything? He talks about withheld payments, unrealistic milestones and other info. Whether it's true or not remains to be seen, but hopefully the full story will be unearthed.

He said he felt sick. I was expecting Kamiya locked away in a broom closet Konami style. What he said was typical.

The thing that really worries me about this is what it could do to Platinum. :(

What I mean is that if the rumours of Microsoft moving the goalposts and knowingly setting unachievable goals are true then the contract termination could be positioned as Platinum's fault. We'll never know the terms of the contract but if Microsoft had lost interest in this game being released then it could well be beneficial for them to end it in this manner and blame it on Platinum not achieving goals rather than just stating they didn't want to fund it any more.

Depending on the contract, it could be possible that Platinum are beholden to Microsoft and need to recompense them due to it being positioned as their fault for not achieving the set goals, rather than the reverse if Microsoft just said they weren't paying for it anymore.

Clearly, there is a hell of a lot off supposition in what I say and I'm basing it on stuff that we don't even know is true but we do know that Darksiders didn't survive Microsoft moving the goalposts several times during the development of Phantom Dust.

Seeing that the top people in Platinum that were working on the game seemingly vanish a few weeks ago and them possibly taking time due to mental issues brought on by this could mean that they have very good reason to be doing that.

Again, I'm not saying that this is what's happened, it may well not be, hopefully this is not what's happening at all.

If that's the case, let's hope journalism can save Platinum.
Worse, they're fucking with people's mental health.

I don't remember it being that bad with either Capcom or Sega.
I'm also reminded of Yasumi Matsuno's health being the official explanation for kicking him off of Final Fantasy XII.

I don't see how it's embarrassing for Microsoft. What if the game was a dud and they escaped the backlash and low sales?

No Man's Sky was a dud, and Sean Murray's integrity was damaged.

I will not comment on NMS I don't think the two situations are related.

But for better or worse this was a high profile project that MS as the publisher couldn't steer across the line. That's the job of the publisher, ultimately.

The game was supposed to come out in 2016, then was delayed to 2017 and now is cancelled.

It's embarrassing. Full stop. MS will want to ensure that we all forget this game ever existed.

Now if you want to suggest that releasing a dud game is more, equal or less embarrassing for them that's fair...I suppose.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.

Hope we get to find out just how fucking specifically insane the impossible milestones were. It's especially sad that Kamiya and co probably tried to achieve them because they believed in the project before burning out and realising MS had set them up to fail.

Scumbag company. Doesn't deserve anyone's support. Phil probably realises its a setting sun on Xbox now with stupid lazy shit like "better 4 the gamers".

There were a lot more consoles sold when gears 3 came out then there are Xbox ones right now. The 360 was the console everyone had. That isn't the case now with Xbox one. That plays a huge factor in games sales.

No it does not .
There are many games this gen that sold more than the ones before with the user base being smaller .
UC4 is a eg of this , the fact is gear and halo IPS are getting smaller for what ever reasons .
This game is just another one showing what problems MS has this gen when comes to games.

Pelase don't take what I say as read. I was just reading what people were saying on here and discussing why it would benefit Microsoft to set unattainable goals.

I could be completely wrong, I often am and I really hope that I am here. :)

Looking forward to MS getting exposed once again in a full editorial. Scum company as per usual.

MS may very well be a scum company, but lets not pretend they're an exception rather than the rule. It wasnt long ago Shu was backing the bus over the devs of No Man Sky, for example.

The whole industry is pretty cut throat. You make bad shit, you're going to get torched. Only difference us if you get the chance to release first ir not.

What a mess.

can't remember which dev and publisher it was.. maybe bethesda.. anyway they had this habit of disapproving and changing milestones, which put external devs in a situation where they'd have to borrow more money. they'd end up being owned by the publisher - which obviously was the strategy from the beginning. Deliberately not signing off on things is exactly what they did-
Seem like the kind of thing MS would do.

Yes. That was allegedly Bethesda with Human Head during the development of Prey 2.

Damn man, how many games has Microsoft Studios cancelled over the years. Feels like so many. Still remember being hyped for True Fantasy Live Online only to have it cancelled.

Feels bad, hope this doesn't affect Plat too much

EDIT: ugghh reading through more of the thread and some of those tweets, unfortunately thats what I was afraid of, MSFT meddling ruined this.

Was the game being fully funded by MS? If it was, then I suspect it had to be relatively low risk for Platinum if they weren't spending their own money.

Kamiya is a vet in this industry, he has worked on all kind of projects, RE2 had a really rocky development (let's remember that Mikami scrapped the current version of the game, the one known as 1.5 when it was like at 60%) but he managed to pull throught and released one of the best PSX games.

He's not new to the pressure of the industry, so something really fucked up must has happened for the guy to had to take a rest due to mental health.

Nothing.

I suspect that a lot of MS-shitting has to do with console warz.

Think for a moment, if the game had potential, MS would be supporting it.

There is a lot that we do not know about the situation, but people like the one that you quoted are ready to hulk up...

I honestly don't think potential has anything to do with this decision. I think working relationship...creative differences and market conditions are the buzz words that will fly around this pile of dung for a while.

I'm really upset that this has tanked, as I was really looking forward to it!

Wish one of these "in the know" guys would write something, rather than talk amongst themselves with clickbait tweets though.

Rumors seem to be all over the place right now. Sounds like both are at fault and Platinum couldnt deliver what MS wanted and the Studio was probably in way over their head. They released a few games when this was announced and still have a game coming in early 2017. they have like 193 employees and thats what I expect for developing an open world game.

I will agree with previous poster the size of people who own xbox is smaller. But I would argue also having Multiple halo games and gears games with spin offs are bigger culprits. They need to either leave them alone, reboot them, or have the studios create new IP's.

Platinum had a good run :/ shame what's happened them the last few years, they really tried but no one bought their shit so they were forced to make shitty licensed games and go the ARPG for their bigger titles. Nier seems like it will be good but Scalebound was not going in the right direction imo. I'm not upset about the game being cancelled just that platinum is in big trouble now.

Used to be a passionate Xbox fan, the others too but these days with Xbox I find myself just puzzled by a lot of stuff particularly the UI or just downright underwhelmed.

Haven't been impressed with Phil Spencer much either, I appreciate backwards compatibility, it's cool but I don't think it should be at the forefront of your brand for months, which from E3 2016 to new year, it's what they have had to shout about the most.

For all the people who say about the wealth Microsoft has, this lack of studios discussion or the studios they do have pumping out the same franchises, never seems to go away, I remember the last couple of years before Xbox One, they were getting called out for it then too and their supposed direct competitor with said less financial power has more than them. Says a lot to me.

Vg charts isn't legit. They make their numbers up. So that 617K number is BS.

You just quoted an article that quoted ********. C'mon man, if you're gonna make a statement AT LEAST use better sources

are we quoting ******** numbers now ? or only when it suits our narrative ?
I removed it. Is there evidence Gears 4 sold anywhere near 4 million in its launch month though?

WOW Microsoft! I look at things through a focal point, so to speak. But, you gotta wonder about the little guy. A lot of young developers were most likely on this. Where will they go now? *This opinion of course, is based on Micosoft at fault here; Possible/Unlikely?

What is the next step for Platinum and Microsoft?
