Rumors seem to be all over the place right now. Sounds like both are at fault and Platinum couldnt deliver what MS wanted and the Studio was probably in way over their head. They released a few games when this was announced and still have a game coming in early 2017. they have like 193 employees and thats what I expect for developing an open world game.

But apparently Platinum couldn't deliver what MS wanted because MS was setting intentionally impossible milestones to work around the contract

The exact same thing happened with Phantom Dust.

can't remember which dev and publisher it was.. maybe bethesda.. anyway they had this habit of disapproving and changing milestones, which put external devs in a situation where they'd have to borrow more money. they'd end up being owned by the publisher - which obviously was the strategy from the beginning. Deliberately not signing off on things is exactly what they did-
Seem like the kind of thing MS would do.
Are you talking about what happened to Human Head and Prey 2?

Why are they deleting all the videos/trailers? Is this a standard thing to do when canceling games? Because it seems like an overkill to me.

Not surprised by this, as the game didn't really look that composed honestly. Guess we will have to wait for the inevitable Switch exclusive from Platinum, but I'm ok with that. Maybe Sony can find a "repurposed" version of what Scalebound was aiming for with the team.

Especially when we all know nothing gets deleted from the internet I especially when you try to force it.

They probably thought they were getting Vanquish, and ended up with

SBE3.gif

Sorry but theres no sympathy here for that. I mean, if they wanted vanquish or something vanquish esque, they should have just said that to them as part of the publishing deal.

What I'm curious on is if stuff like the online co-op was in Platinum's initial pitch or something MS basically forced them to shoehorn in.

Could be a case where Platinum realized they couldn't deliver on their initial pitch, asked MS if they could scale things back a bit and MS refused to budge at all.

Until you and I have the facts, it is probably best to stop the name-calling, corporation or not.

Ok I can name call based on their past history just fine.

Nothing.

I suspect that a lot of MS-shitting has to do with console warz.

Think for a moment, if the game had potential, MS would be supporting it.

There is a lot that we do not know about the situation, but people like the one that you quoted are ready to hulk up...

And you are defending them because...

a bad game apparently

That gif comes from the E3 presentation that had quite a negative response from a decent number of people around here.

I should check to see if the people who were shitting on the presentation at the time are now completely outraged at the cancellation.

Exactly what I and some devs I spoken to feel.

Trying to carve their own niche because they don't feel like they can compete with Sony on the big SP games front?

I'm a bit sad as a long-time Xbox fan who's liked a lot of their SP stuff, but I can see this being overall fairly positive for the brand... if they manage to make it work. I don't know. This generation made me wonder if there is room for all of these platform holders competing against each other. I don't question that there is room for multiple platforms all filling different needs though. I'm just a bit sad that I seemingly won't be the target audience for them anymore... and I personally feel anxious about their probability of success because I don't necessarily think they've been that good in the MP space either for a while, but that could just be my lack of following that space.

I guess I may never get my dream Halo reinvention in the way God of War did.

I think Platnium can't be trusted with a AAA budget (Scalebound) or low digital only budget (Korra, TMNT), they need a happy medium like Neir: Automata.

Crazy that people are taking sides.
We have no idea what the fuck happened. We can only work with what we see, and if the argument is that the game isnt marketable, then that does seem like a fair point.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
What's wrong with slow?

I don't think it looks ugly or boring. you're piloting a fucking dragon

Its beside the point now but one of my issues was the game is that you appeared to be riding on a glorified helicopter rather than a dragon. Very mundane looking when riding a dragon should be an epic exhilarating experience.

Under Mattrick MS was actually opening studios, The Coalition, MS' Victoria Studio, Twisted Pixel and Press Play were all created or acquired during Mattrick's tenure.

Thats not true, Don left in 2013, Gears franchise was bought in 2014 and Coalition was setup.

No ill-will towards Xbox fans, but seeing as big daddy Microsoft wants the gaming division to go that route anyway, frankly I hope that they get out of gaming, at least as far as the console business goes, ASAP. The trends they keep trying to push ever since they entered the industry aren't healthy, this generation less than ever. Especially if those tweets about Microsoft witholding payment and treating Platinum like shit are true. Wouldn't be the first time they did it after all: Phantom Dust.

This is a bullshit, MS contributed massively to what gaming is today especially online and console OS, and they continue to. They saved Titanfall from being cancelled earlier this gen and have done a whole lot of good, just look at BC - the implementation is a template for all others to follow and evidence to gamers that charging to stream games you own or pay a fee to unlock games you own is unacceptable. Put with the pitch fork down and wait for info to come through please.

They need room to breathe.

Look at how fabulous Bayonetta 2 was. That was Platinum totally off the leash.

For all the negative perceptions of Scalebound people had, we don't know how much of that was under MS's direction.

yeah I think that's the one. anyway point is that publishers do whatever they want to. considering ms track record it wouldn't surprise me if they changed milestones, requested changes to the game and so on.

But apparently Platinum couldn't deliver what MS wanted because MS was setting intentionally impossible milestones to work around the contract

The exact same thing happened with Phantom Dust.

"creative clashes" =/= impossible milestones (game had already been delayed by a year...)

And no, we don't know exactly what happened with Phantom Dust so no "exact same thing" nonsense.

And don't act like MS is some terrible beast. Moon Studios and StudioMDHR have been vocal about how MS has been good to them. Are they perfect? Hell no. There are two sides to every argument. Let's wait and hear the details first

Have you seen how many other projects they were developing while doing this game? Impossible milestones probably because they didnt have enough people working on the game. So yeah maybe because the studio couldnt handle its priorities well for a large title like Scalebound.

Was the game being fully funded by MS? If it was, then I suspect it had to be relatively low risk for Platinum if they weren't spending their own money.

They've always been guns for hire. The risk here is PlatinumGalmes now ending up with a huge chunk of their people without a project, and in turn a lack of funds to employ these people due to the game's cancellation. Scalebound seems to have been a huge project for their standards. Under normal circumstances I would imagine they'd try to have a project lined up as development finishes up, which isn't nearly as likely now

For a studio like PG this could be really bad

Looks to me like this project was simply going on way to long, it's been in the pipeline for yolks and probably wasn't nearing completion... Their patience ran out? Can it to stop the bleeding?

The Coalition is just the new name of Black Tusk studio which was founded under Mattrick.

They had a game which got announced and later on canceled when MS bought the Gears franchise and ended it to them.

Zipline studios was founded in 2010. It is now called The Coalition.

Believes Dragon Quest is a franchise managed by Sony
I can't say i cared about Scalebound because i have way too many games to care about this year as it is on PS4 alone including Nier Automata by Platinum.

But the fact of the matter is that MS losing this is a blow to their first party library this year, and its a blow to Platinum's cred as well as their future prospects regarding what they are going to do with all of those developers working on the project.

Its practically a lose lose situation for both parties, and i can't see that as anything more than a very depressing situation.

Why would they have the project greenlit and spend such a period in development only to do that?

Alot of their budget in the late 2000s must have gone towards Project Natal aka Kinect. Specifically Kinect games. Either that or Microsoft doesn't care about first parties outside of Halo, Gears, and Forza.
Yeah there was definitely a change in focus. Still surprised at how much they were counting on Kinect at launch though. It was all preceded by many months of Wii ceding the monthly sales lead to Xbox 360, Wii U not succeeding, and a drop in handheld software sales as the casual audience went to mobile.
