GoNintendo: "Getting the switch at gamestop might be a bit of a difficult endeavor"

I have no idea where you heard 10 million. That's an absolutely ludicrous amount.

Oops, just checked, this source expects 10 million sold by year one:

http://nintendotoday.com/analyst-nintendo-switch-could-cost-250-and-sell-10-million-in-year-one/

The same site has a Nintendo rep saying Two million shipped in March. Hopefully that means there will be all two million available at launch:

Lol wasn't that a rumor from like Early last year?

I need to be able to get this day one this time. I'm not going to have Nintendo Wii shit happen to be. I have some Amazon gift card credit to use!

Same site? You are linking two different websites.

First one is a projection by Macquarie Securities analyst David Gibson , expecting Switch will sell 10 mil units year one.

Second is based on a official statement by Kimishima, CEO of Nintendo, who says 2 mil units will be first shipment in March.

I'll be attempting my own pre-order on Friday at my local GameStop. I get off my night shift at 7am and will probably try to grab a quick breakfast and just get in line outside the store. Hoping these reports are false, but given that it's Nintendo, I wouldn't be shocked if they turn out to be true.

It might not even be Nintendo's fault -- I could see the possibility that GameStop has a deteriorating or strained relationship with Nintendo at this point. Nintendo takes up a ton of shelf space with amiibos that don't sell well now, constantly difficult with supply when products are actually in demand, etc... And I mean, look how much GameStop really gives a crap about Nintendo? The WiiU, Wii, and 3DS shelf space COMBINED barely matches the size of the PS3 and 360 (last-gen) sections at my local store and the store I used to work at.

I bank more on Nintendo being bad with supply, though. I think GameStop would be willing to give a new platform a chance coming from any of the established manufacturers -- Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo... Just saying I wouldn't be shocked if GameStop is getting kinda sick of being one of the faces of Nintendo's supply ineptitude.

I'm going to have to wait for the launch lineup reveal. Leaning towards just picking up the inevitable limited edition Zelda bundle though.

Wherever you read that, you got to ask them what drugs are they taking, because that's some good shit.

So has Gamestop communicated anything to consumers about preorders? It occurred to me while driving this morning that this presentation will be ending at around midnight on the East Coast. That means they'd have to communicate openings before the event which is a bit unusual?

Pre-ordering in the US sounds fucking terrible. Gamestop here in Ireland have had pre-orders up for over a month. Does Nintendo not allow them to that over there or something? If that's the case, how come they don't care when it comes to Europe.

I think they're trying to limit the wait list for pre-orders. They've done a good job of curbing that with the PS4/XBone but with the Wii, that thing had a fucking money down wait list lasting through the summer at my local store. It was crazy.

Conversely you could have stores just taking preorders before they've received their official allocation number from Nintendo. Thus they may not receive enough to cover all preorders day one, and just have to fill them in the order they were placed as more shipments come in.

Retailers in the US seem to have mostly stopped taking preorders until they know how many units they're getting day one as it was a mess with things like the 360 and Wii where it took months to get enough units to cover all preorders that were taken.

Come Thursday night I can give some approximations as to what stores should be looking at for allocations.

Keep in mind they will be approximations, I cannot tell you what every store in the US will be allocated, but I can give a rough idea. Allocation will vary by location due to how much that store makes, how well Nintendo does there, etc., etc..

Stay tuned :)

This is obviously what Gamestop do here, I may be not 100% guaranteed one but I'm fine with that. To me that's better than the stress you guys are going thru.

I'm getting anxious I miss the boat on amazon preorders. Will be setting my alarm for 4am UK time as I assume the preorders will go live during/right after the reveal. I wish I had preordered on game for £999 here in the UK but now I'm paranoid I've left that too late and won't be guaranteed a day one there now.

Imagine getting to GaneStop at 6am and finding a line there already. Scary!

edit:
and the allotment note on the door states "10 units." And the owner and a manager are each taking one for themselves. More scary!

Depends on where you plan to go. For example I'm not preordering in any location in Seattle or Bellevue, since that would be game over already. Instead I'm going to be at my cousins place in Lacey for the rest of the week and I'll likely have a better chance preordered there then the former since it's a smaller city area.

Well I have to imagine they are still burned by how much unsold Nintendo product they have, especially the Wii U. It still sucks that we keep seeing this happen, hopefully it's not the Wii situation again. Thankfully I don't see myself buying one for awhile, at least until there are a good 7-10 great games I would want to play, otherwise it'll be a waste of money.

I hope it is. Most stores got 40+ Wii units at launch. I've never seen a console receive as many restocks as Wii. When I worked in retail, we'd never get less than 20 in at a time and they happened frequently.

Nintendo supplying Switch units at the same rate as Wii is, like, the best case scenario.

I'm going to miss preorders on Friday because I have to work.

I'm not sure I want one at launch anyway but I won't want one more than this Friday after seeing that presentation Thursday night and watching Treehouse show off games.

This... definitely seems to be worth updating the OP. 20 to 30 is definitely a small number for really populated areas, but for more rural shops that's not too bad at all.

People need to remember a few things here. First and foremost is that Nintendo and Gamestop likely won't allocate all of their day one stock to pre-orders. Second off is that consoles can just be hard to find on day one regardless of manufacturer. PS4 was sold out for weeks in the States. I got a bum unit (pre-ordered) on day one and had to just settle for returning it for an Xbox One. It was either that or wait a month for a restock or a repair from Sony.

Good thing we have something as glorious as Nier Automata dropping in March to ease the pain of not getting a Switch.

But yeah...I really want one day one...

I suppose. Anyone stressing over being able to buy a consumer electronic gadget day one is being pretty silly IMO though. Life's too short for that. Especially if you already have a PS4/X1/PC as their are tons of great games out Q1 to keep you busy if Switch is hard to find for a bit.

I also think people are making far too much of rumored GameStop allocations when places like Best Buy, Target etc. tend to get bigger allotments from Nintendo. I get that some have credit their, but the console is likely to be $250 it seems, just buy it elsewhere if you have to and use your GameStop credit for games, a pro controller etc.

And as above, important to note that places like Best Buy tend to get much bigger allocations from Nintendo than Gamestop. Especially Best Buy as they've partnered with them on a lot of promos.

I can't get a trade-in bonus for my wiiU and 3DS at Walmart. In fact I could probably pay it off if I add the bonus + the games I own for the system.

As I said, use that money for games and accessories for a while if you have to because you miss preordering.

Or conversely, sell your Wii U and 3DS on Craigslist or whatever for more than what you'd get with bonus at Gamestop and use that to buy it wherever you can.

Or just wait until they have one in stock if you miss preorders at GS.

Or use your GS credit to buy Kindle giftcards as they just work as regular Amazon gift cards and buy a Switch from Amazon if they have them and GS doesn't.

Not worth stressing over even if you're one of those Nintendo fanboys that doesn't like games on anything else. It's a game console. You'll probably get one preordered without much fuss. If not, you'll probably get one shortly after launch. This isn't going to be hard to find for ages like the Wii as it's not going to have that mass casual appeal. Worst case it's like PS4 and a little tough to find for 2-3 months. More likely it will be like X1 and pretty easy to find after a month to 6 weeks.

1. I will never use craigslist again. I literally have never seen a transaction actually go through without a hitch from any friend or family that has used it. And I've repeatedly seen them get caught up in scams.

2. Honestly if it's their usual "additional 40%" bonus. I probably can't reasonably ask for more on Craigslist. That would be $210 for the wiiU and $168 for the 3DS

3. I'm not going to be buying $250 of games and accessories for this thing. In fact I doubt I'll buy any accessories outside of maybe a pro controller.

Fair enough to the first 2.

For the 3rd, I didn't mean you had to spend all the credit on games day one. Just on games for Switch over time. Either way you're using your trade in credit on things you'd otherwise spend cash on--be it the system and a game or two day one, or a few games over a few months. Though I get if you can't afford a Switch sans credit currently.
