Listening to it now.

Didn't you people have max times play when you where a kid? I remember getting maximum 1h a day and then when we got the C64 I got 1h* of play after the game was done loading... Which could be an hour if it failed at first. No biggie, heck even up to I was 16 and first moved to my own place I had that hour each day and two on weekends and that was only if I kept all 5s on my report card.
Heck, between sports, school and everything I barely had more than an hour over I'm the weekdays to actually play.

*= this could be combined with my siblings and parents playtime. Dad really loved the 2 player sports games and furiously pressing those buttons for track and field as we played each other. So in fact a good day could be two hours of play and even 3h when Rpgs became a thing and me and my mom played them. She was cooler about is as long as those 5s came on the report card.

As for Splatoon 2, welcome to the world of COD. People always say the same. That new weapon, change the game play totally, better maps etc etc etc.

Competitive games have always been like that. The other option is constant micro-transactions. I would rather buy a new retail game every year or two myself.

Treehouse definitely mentioned the resolution changes. Not sure if Koizumi(or Kimishima, Takahashi etc) mentioned it.

Yay! The episode was worth the wait!

Graham mentioned that the analog stick felt clicky when used as a dpad. Are Nintendo taking a note from the Steam Controller and using haptics to generate clicks to make analog input feel more digital?

I think most Nintendo fans are criticizing it, but are still hopeful. Just some vocal fans that are denying all of its flaws.

Yeah as a major Nintendo fan there's a lot to be critical of, even if personally there's a lot I like.

I have never understood the defence Brigade that exists. Yes you can disagree and not care about certain things but to blatantly refuse to acknowledge any flaws and actually go through some sort of super hero mind bending to explain why those flaws are in fact gold I'll never get...Unlimited SaGa is still a great game!!!! And all of you who says otherwise is so wrong!!.... XD

Great episode for sure. Critical, but without all the hyperbole that has dominated the internet the last few days. Looking forward to the episode next week!

As the unofficial mascot of 8-4Play as well as one of the 5 regular listeners, I'm deeply offended that you forgot my name. It's fine though; I haven't lost any respect for Mark, Roy, Sarah, Graham, or G.G.

Anyway, on Switch: I personally was not blown away nor was I swayed to buy one upon release. I'm at the point where I think buying every 2nd Nintendo console is a pretty good way to go about things. I skipped GCN and played all those exclusives on the Wii. I skipped the Wii U and was hoping to play those games on the Switch, but it looks like that won't be a thing either, making it even less appealing for me out the gate.

The portability thing doesn't do it for me either. I don't want to play Zelda nor Mario on a bus and my laptop can play Civilization so I'm good for travel.

The only way I can see the Switch winning cool points in my eyes is if they finally do right on merging their 'virtual console' with their online infrastructure. Especially if it's going to be a paid subscription this time around, I expect there to be really cool monthly incentives to go back and play the old games.

For example, what if Ice Hockey was free for a month, there was online play, and we had the ability to compare our Win/Loss records with our friends/city/country/world? What if Metroid was free for a month and the online service kept track of your friends stats (who was fastest to get to Kraid, who picked up the most items, who died the least, etc).

At least this would create a cool sense of community around the Switch and it would give people a reason to turn it on every month to check out the new challenges. Sort of in the same way people obsessively played every crappy game on the 360 during the early days because achievement farming was more fun than the actual games being released.

Oh, and I have to say, as an ex-employee of the corporate man-fattening machine known as McDonalds, I always find it funny when people concoct schemes to get fresh or free shit. McDonalds employees are probably the least invested in their job out of anyone on the planet. You really don't need to be crafty; if you want fresh fries, just ask the kid at the cash. He doesn't care. Want a few extra nuggets in your 6-piece? Just ask the kid. He'll give you 8. He'll throw a beef patty in there too if you want. Want a half-milkshake, half-coke mix with some McFlurry stuff in there? Ask the kid. The kid will do that for you. Believe in the kid.

That's all for me. Thanks for the podcast.

THIIIIIS. They're squandering so many opportunities w/their back catalogue. VC could be reason alone to buy the thing if they'd just stick someone with some vision and enthusiasm in charge of it. NES and SNES games with achievements, online play, simple leaderboards would be amaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing. I would re-buy literally everything.

I finished the show this morning - great as always.

I had a question, any plans for a bi-monthly video podcast / show / stream thing? I think agesss ago it was mentioned about setting up a pateron was that just a joke or something serious to fund stuff like a video show or merch? I'd like both personally!

The NES/SNES rentals having online play included and confirmed is the only thing stopping me from laughing everytime I'm reminded of it.

As a mostly PC and Nintendo player, I share Sarah's reticence toward pay-to-play online. I think that last time I payed for an XBL sub was 2011.

I don't like it at all.

You mean reluctance or hesitance. Reticence is unwillingness to speak, which isn't a characteristic Sarah has ever shown on the podcast :p

I'm with you, though. On Wii U and 3DS the only game I've been seriously into playing online is Monster Hunter which I've gone hard at for a couple of months in each of the last two years, then fallen off and just dabbled in the odd hunt from time to time. Apart from that I've played maybe an hour of Mario Kart online, did a little trading in Animal Crossing, mostly just fruit and stalk market stuff, and tried the Splatoon and Tri Force Heroes betas.

From what they've announced it seems unlikely there will be great incentives to having the service. NES and SNES rentals hold minimal appeal for me. The promise of digital discounts is a joke considering how absurdly Nintendo prices their games on the eshop.

So I can't see it offering enough value for me to want to be a permanent subscriber. I'll be stuck dealing with online multiplayer like it's a fucking microtransaction... urgh.

Two quick thoughts
- Maybe they thought the app solution for voice chat and friend interaction would solve the problem of letting children on the internet and interact with strangers. The idea being that anyone who even owns a smartphone should atleast somewhat know their way around it and have the permission by their parents.
- Have they ever mentioned in which mode the Switch rund when you're on your couch, but connected to power via USB-C? I was hoping it would run in console mode aka have better graphics, but it doesn't look like it.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Congrats Mark !! - completely forgot to post here after listening. Liked the episode, still need to hear Johns take on the system unveiling once he is back,

Thats where im at - i never played for online and wont do it on Switch either....unless they are providing some really great value and its cheaper than what the competition is offering.

I will wait for final judgement until we have all the information though - too many people going nuts about it when we dont even know the price for example.

So when they talk about Xenoblade and how hideous the faces were in Xenoblade Chroncicles X.
is there actually a reason as to why they look that way

one could give an in-universe explanation, but that's probably not the reason they are designed this way.
