Dont get why people want a female link, would much prefer Zelda as a playable character. Nintendo aren't going make female version of Mario instead they give Peach as a playable character.

Another example of a challenge we faced was the physics engine. We wanted a consistent physics engine throughout the world that worked in a logical and realistic way. Actually implementing that was sometimes more complicated than it seemed. [For example], one day I picked up the latest build of the game and went to an area, and saw that all the objects that were supposed to be in that area weren't there. I was quite surprised and confused, and I realized after asking the programmer, the reason the objects weren't there was because the wind in-game had blown them all away.

That's the kind of challenge we faced, making the physics engine realistic, but not to the extent that it would negatively impact things - striking a balance between realism and having it work within the game world.
I love this bit. Shows that you'll never run into the sort of problem he describes in the first paragraph.

But unless you play the entire game as Zelda, this is not what people want.

Here we go again.

Link is not the same Link in every game, for the most part. You cannot compare Link to Mario.

We did. Their explanation was disappointing

Well I didn't say their explanation was good lol, just that I was sure I've read this before

Because people just do? Not really some deep thing. And it's not the same thing as a theoretical female Mario, seeing as how LoZ actually has a lore that would support the idea of a female Link being a thing.

As for why someone might want a female Link over Zelda... not everyone's into using the magic that Zelda would presumably be equipped with I guess. I'll stop it here though lol

That was great. Almost tempting to say 'give me an option in the menu to have realistic physics mode'!

Princess Zelda as she appears in the game as a whole is very complex and multi-faceted, and it's not as if she's crying all the time in the game [laughs], so I would ask fans not to read too much into just that one scene from the trailer, and to please play the game and appreciate Zelda as she is in all her aspects.
So people stop thinking she is a cry baby, I know some of ya think that about her.

Did you ever consider only releasing Breath of the Wild on Switch, or was it important for fans of Wii U to still have the game released on that console?

Aonuma: No, we never considered not releasing the Wii U version, and changing development solely to Nintendo Switch - that was never on the cards. As I mentioned, this title started development as a Wii U title, so first and foremost we started it on Wii U. After we also decided to develop for Nintendo Switch... if we'd gone more in that direction, using Nintendo Switch console's other features that Wii U doesn't have, we felt that a gap might have opened up in terms of the experience between both platforms.

With Nintendo Switch we're really happy with that functionality of being able to take it wherever you go, but beyond that we really wanted the gameplay experience to be the same, and for Wii U fans to be able to experience the same game people who play it on Switch will be able to experience.
It sounds like the WiiU version is holding the Switch version back in the name of parity.

Wish it weren't so.

You can't have a female Link, because the story calls for a sort of legend/prophecy where a hero comes to solve a problem. And in that, it's a male hero. So because the game is set with that as the story background, you can't have a different gender; you are a male character.

So female link actually was a possibility at some time? ok

From the interview:

I seem to remember three years ago when we showed the first trailer at E3, I said something along the lines of "I never said that Link would necessarily be male" or something along those lines, and that got taken out of context and turned into a rumour that took on a life of its own. Link has always been portrayed as a male character as the protagonist of the games.

So it was never in the cards until the reaction to his comment. It was due to the reaction that they just briefly discussed the idea afterwards, but they then decided not to do anything differently.

If you're lazy to read the article do not jump to conclusion and spread false rumor. Thanks.

You skipped the last part that they're not closed on the option since they let Hyrule warriors have females playable heroes.

I'm a bit disappointed Zelda won't use HD Rumble and the other Switch features. We're back again at waiting five years for Nintendo to show with another Zelda game why those features are actually worthwhile.

People actually complained about Zelda crying in the trailer? Sheesh, what's up with some people?? I thought it was awesome. The whole trailer felt epic.

I'm glad they stayed with boy Link. Really glad.

I've read from Treehouse people on Twitter that the game actually uses HD Rumble.

Remember the first Breath of the Wild E3 reveal? I think that Link design looked more female than ever. Wish they would just give the option.

Boy Zelda could have cried as well.

Both Peach in the Mario trailer and Zelda crying in the BOTW trailer stood out at Nintendo's event. In a bad way.

Yeah some people get really up in arms about the depiction of females in fiction, especially when they seem to fit stereotypes.

and because they will use it in their game design.
but it's also a shame they are the one doing this kind of stuff on AAA games because of the hardware they work on.

That's just in reference to the story of Tri Force Heros. Basically saying that the three Links are male characters because only those three that applied for the job happened to be male. Read the full answer next time.

I'm going to tell you a little bit about the story quickly and we'll circle around, here. There's this kingdom, an event happens, and the king needs heroes. So, he puts out a call for heroes to gather and one of those is this guy Link. He sees this audition, basically, ‘Heroes needed; apply here.' And, that's the start of his adventure.

The story calls for this sort of legend/prophecy where heroes will come together to help solve a problem. And in that, they are male characters. So, because the game is set with that as the story background, you cannot choose a gender; you are a male character.

Oh really.

Yes. I mean, it's right there, clear as day on his full answer. He was explaining the reason why those three Links are all male in the context of the story in Tri Force Heros.

It does use HD rumble. Also enhanced sound.

But we're talking about one scene. One. Damn. Scene. Girls (and boys) are allowed to cry. Seems like an overreaction to me /shrug.

I think you're reading too much into it but if it bothers you, vote with your wallet I suppose?

I really think the implementation of this physics engine is a major development for the Zelda series. The way the physics engine underpins everything in the world really offers up a lot of new possibilities. For instance, in Breath of the Wild you might have a puzzle where making use of the physics, there'll be various ways you can solve that puzzle. That really opens up a lot of possibilities so there's not just one way to progress in the game or just one way to solve a puzzle.

Non-linear puzzle solving!

So what would HD rumble exactly do in a game like this?

Also this game has gyro controls right?

I feel like people see hd rumble as a new control gimmick and not just a simple evolution of rumble.

When your sword hits an enemy it might have a softer shake as opposed to a metallic feeling one if it hits metal. HD Rumble. Not really that complicated.

I expect sony and microsoft to adopt it eventually as well.

But Zelda and Peach where both helpless in both trailers. It isn't just one scene, it is almost all Zelda and Mario games before this.

Wish it weren't so.

The Switch version is also holding the Wii U version back. Gamepad integration was supposed to be a central feature of the game. Just the way it is.

Im sure the result will be fantastic either way.

The overreaction is lame, but I guess I get it. Zelda has always been one of those characters where you just wish they'd do a better job of handling in terms of characterization. So having her cry, people pick up on that, assuming little to nothing will change for her in this game.

Logically it's like, wait for the full game to make your judgments. But realistically... no one would be surprised if the trend continues lol

Yes it's a stereotype but is it not true that (generally) females cry in public more than boys? That's certainly true to my life experiences. I'm not saying it's right for all games to do this but we shouldn't really be surprised (or outraged) if some games still do it. And I'm not saying we shouldn't have strong female characters because we should (and do).

Having emotion is a great show of characterisation in my opinion, but I do get your point.
