NPD - FFXV experienced the best console launch month in franchise history

why even come in here to post something like this. you just look silly.

Just playin Devil's Advocate..

I've never been a fan of treating major media conglomerates as underdogs. I don't really think the game is worthy of accolades given the state it was released in.

Oh, I'll add that, as a fan of what the franchise used to be, I'd hate that SE was encouraged to make more games like FFXV. But I suppose that is a selfish sentiment.

Was decline again because of top 3?

Good question! Cool that you remember that.

Not so much this time. FFXV did some work that helped the comp. Only catch is that all the titles in the top 3 last year were in month 2 or more of distribution. Needed FFXV month 1 to make up ground. Picture for total market is probably a little less positive than it appears thanks to the release timing of FFXV if you know what I mean?

what sold more DR4 or TLG?

Can't believe I forgot to do this the first time.

I was feeling pretty confident about P5's sales blowing everyone away, but I never for a second thought it would compete with FFXV.

I'm not even as confident about the first point after so many delays anymore.

I'm sure the game will be amazing, of course, ez goty.

So much for Japan being much of a barometer on anything. Still mixed on this game, but it is better than FFXIII, so hopefully selling so well keeps them moving in the right direction.

Some iffy design issues aside, (Cindy,Leviathan)

Great for the game. We need more high profile JRPGs doing well. It's very important going forward that these games need to be truly global.

Which definition of devil's advocate fits "insulting comment about a person who has different tastes"?

Yeah the dream few years ago was Persona 5 crossing over 1 million WW. I think it will do that.

It was too big to fail really. From a critical perspective I don't think it deserves it.

Not salty about it though. I spent over 100 hours playing it.
Also, this is the only instance that we have seen this gen for a JRPG with that high of production value. That really took it a long way for me. It has amazing ambience and music, the day/night cycle with their lighting really makes for some of the most beautiful atmosphere I have seen in a game.

I have been very critical of this game though, I agree completely with all the story complaints, pacing, etc. The more you understand the combat, the more janky you realize it is too.

No salt here. All the game needs is a director's cut and it's fine. The gameplay is great but the story has editing/pacing issues that weren't as apparent in other FF mainline games. Making your playerbase dependent on a movie and anime series-prequel isn't a good way to do storytelling and should be taken as a lesson for the future.
So you do have to watch those to get the full story. I didnt know if it was because I was so high and wasnt paying attention but I felt like I got dropped in the 2nd act of a story

P5 will probably have the best debut in the series, but Colin and Greg need to get out of their bubble when it comes to this shit. No way P5 would be on par with FFXV sales wise.

Great to hear that a game where the core lesson is Homies, dudes, and playas before Lady Lunafreyas did well.

I'm sure being $30-40 three weeks after release helped move some copies.

Bwahaha

Can you comment on peripheral sales/revenue? Like how well did the PSVR or VR, in general, do in December?

Can't get into specifics. I understand that the first party and retail are very happy with PSVR. I honestly don't know how to define what is "good" and what is "bad" in terms of VR sales in 2017. And opinions are all over the board.

Colin and Greg were theorizing it would sell pretty close to FFXV. That was pretty hilarious.
I don't know what the context of that conversation is, because I find it hard to believe even they would believe that. The game would require some kind of monumental, bank-emptying advertising push by Sega/Atlus and Sony working together, and that's just never going to happen for very good reasons.

Lmao, burnt by the NPD guy.

Should be interesting to see what happens with VR this year .
Sony also need to sort out there stock problems with PSVR .

NPD only tracks North America, so who knows. We'll have to wait for SE to officially disclose WW sales, if they chose to.

SE already gave WW numbers over 6 million shipped . ( shipped is normal use by everyone)

Square might not be, but Tabata is. He was given a smoldering wreck and managed to make a solid game out of the ashes.

I'm glad it did well, and I hope next time he can do a project from the ground up, and bring it all the way to completion.

As a fan of what the franchise used to be, you should know very well that a game selling well doesn't really mean anything creatively.

Didn't FFVII sell a fuckload of copies? Didn't prevent the series from changing a lot since then.

XIII sold better than XII, and yet, if I had to choose one of the two to compare FFXV to, it would definitely be XII.

With this franchise's history, I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Maybe if Tabata is announced as director for the next FF, then you can worry.

Oh, for sure. EASY.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.

Do you guys also include Oculus Rift in NPD? How did Oculus Rift fare in December?

don't hate the playa, hate the game, playa, playa

I still haven't beaten it yet... Kinda waiting for those patch fixes and to see how the DLC is gonna be implemented to continue (i.e. will they insert the character episodes into the main story itself, or will they only be available outside of the main game?)

Yeah.

Yeah, hopefully they start getting more of them in stores. It seems pretty likely even more people would have bought it for RE7 if they could have kept up with making more available.

Good to hear it seems to be well-received by first party and retail so far at least.

Open world FF here to stay .
FFVIIR might not be but i expect FFXVI to be open world .
The west makes up to much of FF sales numbers now .

Final Fantasy changes drastically based on who's directing. I doubt SE is gonna all of a sudden force their devs to make an open world game because XV did well.

But Duckroll told me this was a bomba...

Duckroll gave Tabata and his team props in this thread.

If it does end up that way, I suppose it'll finally be time for me to stop buying any games in the series. On the bright side, at least I have the first 14 games as good memories.

Exactly. I'm pretty sure FFXVI will be nothing like FFXV. This is not how FF has ever worked, and we should be happy about it. Always something fresh and unexpected to look forward to, which is a rare thing in the AAA space.
