Switch, best to go with joy cons/grip and pro controller, or second set of joy cons?

I have been vascillating back and forth whether or not to order a second set of joy cons and a grip, or spring for a pro controller for my second controller instead.

I've read a lot of first hand reports that the joy cons in the grip feel great, and that the pro controller isn't any better feeling over them or much more functional.

I know the joy cons with grip are more expensive, but if they prove to be as good as the pro, I don't see the downside beyond cost (which I don't mind), and offer a lot more flexibility.

Curious what others are thinking here, and are there some benefits to the pro controller I'm missing?

Edit: What about a game like Arms? Game looks great to me. I know you don't have to play with motion controls, but it seems like that was the intent of the developer. Just afraid Nintendo might publish more games like this in the future where it might be more advantageous to have a second set of joy cons.

We'll find out sooner or later. I hope that the joycon with the grip is comfortable enough. I don't want to drop 70 bucks for the pro controller.

I'm going to get an extra set of Joy-Cons and a single Pro Controller.

When we play Smash I'll have the Pro and everyone else can play with half a Joy-Con.

depends on what you need a second controller for. for local multiplayer i'd definitely go with joycons. for personal, definitely pro

If you're primarily going to play by yourself and occasionally with a few friends, the included Joy Con Grip and a Pro Controller is likely the best way to do it.
You can use the Pro Controller for yourself when playing on the TV and you can play 3 players or two players with the "full" controller. You'll get more personal use out of it.
If you go with an additional set of joy cons you'll be able to play 4 players but there's likely no need for an extra set of joy cons for your personal use.

I'll probably get a Pro at/soon after launch.

A 2nd set of joy con later in the year for when family come over. The kids can play 4 player Mario Kart that way, etc.

I will get the Pro Controller at launch and maybe in the future a second set of controllers if I really feel I would use them.

Haha, that's messed up man.

The buttons on the joycon look a little on the small side, closer to a portable, but they look comfy enough to me. The pro controller is tempting, too because the dpad and the fatter face buttons.... I think I'd go for a second set of cons for the flexibility, tho. Specifically playing 4 players.

Now I'm not sure. Both sound good.

A second set of Joy Con with a grip is $95-100.

A pro controller is $70.

Neither of these are priced to justify buying a second controller for the console in my opinion but for the sake of having two, I would go for a pro controller.

Do you intend on playing ARMS with someone else? Then it's gonna have to be Joy-Cons. Otherwise, the Pro Controller to have something different and a d-pad for fighting games and platformers.

My thoughts exactly plus I want to see more possibly controller color options in the future. But we will see there is a smaaaall chance I might change my mind and get more joycons with grip

Edit : any friends who has one can just bring their joycons. And for arms you can use regular controls but that kinda takes out the appeal of the game a little bit

I want to try the Pro before I decide. It would be nice to get four controllers for only one additional purchase.

Basically I'll use the included joy cons for a bit and if they're decent-to-great I'll get two more, otherwise it'll be a Pro.

I see where your coming from with the two Joy Cons but I'd go with the Pro controller for the D Pad. Plus the analog sticks and buttons apparently are the same as the Wii U Pro controller with their travel and size, not that the Joy Cons are bad to begin with of course.

What's the consensus on the joy cons grip controller? I don't know if people got to try them at the events, but if they did, were they comfortable? If I can't get a Pro Controller right away, I'm hoping it'll still feel good to play Zelda using the grip.

Personally I see myself getting a second set of Joycon before I get a Charge Grip or Pro, just for multiplayer games like ARMS or MK8.

But most likely I won't get any of them and just stick to the base unit as I'm not sure I'll really use the system for multiplayer much at all. 20 hour charge time for the Joycons means even when I do happen to play the system docked, which won't be much, I'll have more than enough battery life to last play sessions.

That's cruel.

It doesn't seem like motion controls are going to be a huge component of the system and the pro controller has gyro functionality anyway, so it seems like a better option to me than a second set of joycons.

I was originally set on a Pro, but after seeing ARMS in action, I'm going to wait to see if there is a custom joy con/ARMS bundle at release.

I strongly believe there will be.

Just an FYI, you can play arms without the motion controls.

Sure, but who wants to do that? (when docked) You can also play it solo, but the advanced motion controls/rumble and the multiplayer are at the core of the game. The Joy-Cons are what makes this game special. Sony and MS would have to make new accessories to offer a similar experience, so I think it has potential to be a decent system seller for the Switch.

By the same token, Street Fighter II is playable without a d-pad, but people will want to play it with a d-pad.

I got an extra set of joy cons with a grip so I could have the option for motion controls in case another cool ARMS-like game used it.

I preordered a single pro controller aside from the console. So with this and the included joycons I have enough controllers for 3 player bomberman which is good enough for now, and I will probably buy a second pair of joycons when ARMS comes out.

I've heard numerous people say that the joy cons + grip is just as comfortable as the pro controller, so I'll be getting that eventually so I have 4 controllers total instead of 3 so I can rock 4-player when the time comes!

Pro controller maybe after the price comes down.

Gonna get a second joy con set for arms, 4 player, and other motion control stuff

Probably won't pick up the pro controller until its cheaper since I plan to play switch mostly on the go.

Dual-wield, OP.

But who says you need the Joy-Con Grip at all? You can also play your games with two separate wireless Joy-Con controllers, one in each hand. This was my personal favorite way to play The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. There's a certain freedom to being able to separate your hands when playing a two-handed game.

They chose this scheme over the grip and the the pro controller. If I can't get a pro controller at launch, I'm going this route. I might go this route in the end, actually.

I know I shouldn't but I'm picking up a set of Joy-Con (red) for ARMS along with a Pro-Controller (just to have)

I can see how that would be liberating if I want to play while lying down on the couch.

The more I think about it, I'm going to ride it out with the included joy cons and grip for Zelda, then make a decision before Arms comes out.

I am excited too, but the answer is to try out the joy cons + grip at launch and then make a determination.

Both look great. If I had to decide, I would go for the second set of joy cons but just depends on you.

Also, I am most excited to try the joy cons without the grip relaxed like the Wiimote + nunchuck.

I don't understand why everyone is obsessed with the Grip and Pro Controller? Like, a set of Joy-cons does everything a Pro Controller does and more. So why not just skip the grip and hold it like a Wiimote and Nunchuk, but instead it has a normal gamepad layout?

Other than having a d-pad, the Pro Controller looks like comfort food for people who can't handle new controller layouts.

Because I've always hated how a wiimote and nunchuk felt? I didn't like the controller being split in half. It never felt like I had a solid grip on anything, and I felt like I was losing some precision and stability.

Because it might feel bad. Time will tell.

I personally love the way it felt. I did however hate bolted on motion controls in the nunchuck and the connecting cord. Joycons appear to eliminate those issues.

I'm going with the extra set of joycons and a grip for the traditional experience. Despite the cost, it's cool that getting an extra set of joycons will put me at 4 player MP.

Im getting a set of neon red joy cons and a pro controller. Only debating about another grip since i actually liked playing conventional wiimote and nunchucks so seperate from each other.

Ah ok awesome thanks.
Keep in mind that unless you have another USB-C charger around you will need to unplug the dock everytime you want to charge your Switch in handheld mode. Also please don't use a Nexus 5X or 6P charger with your switch, these are unsafe.

I thought about this and second set of joycons just made more sense for another $10. Especially since I have ARMS per-ordered. Like someone mentioned above, joycons do everything pro controller does plus motion.
