Indie developer Conatus (argh, that name) has finally announced the release date of its Canadian-developed River City Ransom sequel, River City Ransom: Underground. This game is currently exclusive to Steam (PC/Mac/Linux), but console versions should follow if it sells well enough.

River City Ransom: Underground now has a release date, and it's February 27th, 2017.
BARF!

The Kickstarter happened way back in September 2013, so it has been a while. Shantae: Half-Genie Hero took a similar amount of time, though - and that came from an established developer. Glad Underground will be here at last. Let's hope that console ports won't be far behind.

RCR: Underground on Steam - River City Ransom: Underground costs $16 at launch, and will go up to $19.99 later on.

River City Ransom: Underground Features:
  • Over 100 hand-drawn levels
  • 8+ Heroes, each with dozens of unique fighting moves
  • An open world where you fight, shop, and upgrade your characters' abilities
  • 10 tenacious and varied enemy gangs to conquer
  • Local or online multiplayer co-op campaign story
  • Local or online multiplayer arena fighting mode
  • Super-responsive peer-to-peer (P2P) networking technology

There has been basically no talk of a console port since it failed to reach its stretch goals way back in 2013 so I wouldn't hold my breath, although they are interested and my understanding is it might be easy to port being made in Monogame.

Looks really fun. I was confused at first cause Kunio Kun is Aksys but it looks like they licensed it to them.

Thank GOODNESS!!! I've been looking forward to this game forever! I was sincerely getting worried that they may never complete it...

Urge to port beg...Rising...Rising...

River City Ransom was one of my favorite NES games, and my favorite side scrolling beat'em up of all time. I missed out on the kickstarter but I am super interested with this one. Can't wait to co-op!

EDIT: Haha, Alex and Ryan are old dudes!?!?! That fits so well, I can't wait!

The steam greelight trailer felt better to me. The areas look so goood. Seems much better than the recent Kunio games content wise.

Holy CRAP!

AN unofficial sequel to my favorite NES game of all time. How the heck did I not know about this?!?

Well then, bought. 4 times.

Hmm looks kinda over-animated to me given the 8 bit style they are going for. Also not liking the character portraits or hell some of the character designs in general.

Thought I was the only one thinking of this. Glad to see I wasn't. I really liked the Japanese high school yankii theme of Kunio kun. Seeing boxers and wrestlers with beards feels really off to me. But the gameplay looks fun, so I'm a bit conflicted.

I agree with the designs looking "eh", but I love the bump in animation.

Just because it looks retro doesn't mean it has to be a perfect recreation.

There are so many retro style games out there, that I'm more interested in the ones that add or try something new (however small that is).

Plus if your going to have multiple characters, having distinct personalities/animations is the way to go, and the way to entice people who don't feel any nostalgia for the style/IP.

I'm a sucker for great animation.

Really looking forward to the release.

Backed in when it was on KS, and have somewhat followed the updates, but I was wondering if it was even close to release.

The developers have said they'd like to get this ported to as many consoles as possible, including the Neo Geo Pocket! So a Nintendo Switch version would certainly be on the table depending on how well the title sells. I'll gladly buy this at launch on Steam to support them as the game looks great! The game seems like a perfect fit for the Switch with the JoyCon controllers and playing with friends!

I've been excited about this since I backed the original Kickstarter way back when.

I love how it looks and I'm glad they've taken their time to do it right. I hope the game is as fun as I imagine it could be. Will be there day 1 to find out.

That looks amazing! It looks way better looking than that Tokyo Rumble game I bought for 3DS (although I still do like that one)

I didn't expect this so soon into the year! Love all the character trailers and updates they've been showing us over the years, and I really look forward to giving it a solid go. I'm not as down on DDIV as some are, but I think the TL&C and content heft of this game will meet what many are missing from that particular release.

I find it kind of sad that many JP developers don't seem to want to put this kind of effort into Retro-revivals anymore. It feels much too rare to see Hand-drawn stages, original sprites, deep animation, a variety of characters, and so many special moves and such all in one product from anything from the east anymore. And if you do see it, it's most likely restricted to Mobile.

Hmm looks kinda over-animated to me given the 8 bit style they are going for. Also not liking the character portraits or hell some of the character designs in general.

I think it looks "over animated" in the same way I thought MMX looked too smooth when compared to the NES games back in the 90s; it's jarringly different than what I'm used to, so it's odd.

But at the same time, I think it's 8-bit with animation that tries to rival something more like Metal Slug, and I think that's awesome, really. That's a great compromise for a smaller, newer, inexperienced dev team, to me.

As far as the "ugly" part of the style, I think that actually fits very good to make this game a sequel to the USA RCR / Crash and the Boys series, and not a Kunio-Kun game. It treats it as it's own separate spiritual successor, rather than just sticking to the JP origins, and that's actually kind of cool. That feels very much like how the old games of yesteryear thought we couldn't handle Japanese influence in our western releases, so they smeared machismo over everything...

... except here all the backers, developers, and fans are in on the joke, so we instead get to have a much more diverse cast of characters and inspirations. Which definitely has it's own brand of appeal.

I think I backed this.

They kind of took the whole Kunio-aesthetic and made it their own, didn't they? But it also seems really busy... maybe because the trailer has the camera so closed in on the action. Kinda funny this is coming out so soon after Arc dropped Double Dragon IV, I wonder which one will come out on top in the world of retro-style modern beat-em-ups?

Shame Scott Pilgrim will never leave PSN/XBL.

What's blocking Scott Pilgrim? Feels undeserved for it stay trapped on 360/PS3 store.
