PS4 System Software Update 4.50 Features Detailed

external HDD is useless to me since I hate the added bulk, but great for those that wanted it

Custom Wallpapers is the megaton for me. Now we just need full custom theme support like PS3

Thread seems overwhelmingly positive so allow me to have a moan:

No support for streaming or local 3D video files?
No system level integration of downsampling on the Pro?

"This is just a taste".

The latter is probably something they'll leave up to devs though.

Whoah good on them since nov I have been on the fence about upgrading the drive. Also I know it's a small number but I am excited to watch Tron Legacy in 3D VR.

Go to Amazon and get a SATA III to USB 3.0 cable. Don't bother with an enclosure.

This can't be done. The Xbox One formats the entire harddrive when you use it with the system. The PS4 may as well.

Is a sata III to usb 3.0 cable compatible with sata II hdd? I would like to use my old ps4 500gb hdd.

What's the supersampling?

Really happy they're supporting external HDD.
PS4 PRO renders at higher resolution than 1080p
Supersampling outputs that high res image on a 1080p screen resulting in super sharp and clean image, almost Bullshot quality.
but some devs and thought it be wise to disable the high resolution when playing on a 1080p TV so HDTV owners get zero benefits when playing on Pro.
And it ad system default would mean all games with 4k output will get supersampling on 1080p TV'S.

Yet we still can't change our PSN names can we?It's fucking 2017.I'm tired of seeing people with names like blablabla23571 in BF1.

Wish they would revamp the media player. I have tons of stuff that plays janky or not at all on ps4. But works on ps3 or xbone/TV. Also the fast forward is the upside down from ps3 when you hit r2 for a fraction of a second and it jumps 10 minutes.

External HDD support is a nice morning piece of news to wake up to. However, my PS VR takes up my Pro's rear USB slot. So, what's the story on using USB hubs with the PlayStation? Should I expect a good experience, provided I use a quality hub?

I don't know but I wouldn't do that with a mechanical drive, just an SSD. With an SSD the enclosure is pretty useless but with mechanical drives the enclosure can protect it from damage/dust.

what are some cons to using an external hdd? like will read slow or anything
On the Xbox One things can either have no meaningful change in performance, or dramatically reduced loading times (particularly in open world games) with my external SSD.

Hopefully people can shut up about it now.

Those people had every right to make a big deal out of it.

Glad it's in now. I may use my PS4 for more than exclusives in that case. I like to have all my games installed at once.

Both my gaming PC and Xbox One have over 200 (well 400 PC) games installed.

If it's a 7200-10000rpm USB 3.0 Drive, it will be (possibly) faster.

What if both the PS4's is set as the Primary and that thing
Correct me if I'm wrong but you can't have multiple systems set as primary (without keeping them offline). I doubt that they'd (solely) check for the status of the system if they went for the lock drives to the console option.

Nothing I really care about but hopefully people can stop complaining about running out of hard drive space now

I'll continue to just delete things I'm not currently playing

The external storage option is great, but I didn't know there were so many Gaffers that had to have 20+ games installed on their system at once (1 TB). This was never a big deal to me. It may be now that I'm going all digital, but because of my connection speed, I pretty much remove single player games or MP games that I haven't played for years.

It mainly depends on the size of the games installed and the games you continue playing. Destiny and GTA V, DC Universe, a couple of other F2P games.

Halo Collection MP.... It just depends. Case by case basis. And I rarely uninstall a game unless I have no intention to ever play it again.

Having others in the house means I cant really just uninstall anything too. You never know what someone else wants to play. My son shocked my saying he never played Uncharted 1. And with how much he replayed 2 and 3 and Golden Abyss for the Vita....the Uncharted Collection and Uncharted 4 might never get uninstalled.

The 2TB in my PS4 was fine a few years ago. But not now.

I have the 4TB version of that drive, bought it just before the PS4 Pro launch, for transferring from a PS4 with a 2TB drive to the Pro. It did the transfer with no issues and has been a PC external drive since then with no problems so far.

Cheers, that'll do then!

Picking up a 4 TB drive on the way home. Now I can finally keep stuff like Doom installed without hogging up a ton of my drive (or having to download it + gigs and gigs of patches on top of it every time).

Not wild about the change to the notifications panel, though. Not that I get a ton of them, but I had zero issue finding what I needed to in the old system. Stacking everything in a single list seems like a huge step backwards.

Here's Hoping that the custom wallpaper element stems the tide of trash that floods PSN every week, and makes room for what I've been working on :) this should also help push Devs to go the distance with preorder theme bonuses, rather than stick with something static.
Yeah :) Custom wallpapers make static theme irrelevant and only make dynamic themes stand out more. Unless there a static theme with really good music, sound effects key tones and icon changes, would maybe keep those and just replace the wallpaper yourself if needed

But will the PS4, PS4 Pro read USB 3.0 external drive at its max speed though?

Even with internal SATA 3 in PS4 Pro Digital Foundry tested not much difference just abit faster, maybe a bottleneck due to the CPU or bandwidth something like that?

Curious to find out maybe through USB the speed cap is less strict somehow
DF tests is so superficial with 4-5 games only even so Pro + SDD showed a ~20% more speed than SDD on PS4.

I think it needs to tests more games because it is at game basis... Project Cars didn't show any difference even for mechanical HDD for example.

Not sure if it's been answered, but is it like Xbox one HDD where you can remove/ connect to any system? It's no longer locked to the system its initial format is ?

The taste is usually the major things. And the other stuff is a few UI fixes. If I recall correctly from past updates.

Yeah, I doubt a media player update is big news though. Fucked up if they leave it out after doing the blu-ray work. I might buy a 3D blu ray now though...

Weirdly, there's a porn site that claims to have PSVR media player support. No idea how that works.

PSVR 3D is the biggest one for me, no longer got a 3D TV (Bought KS8000) and have loads of 3D Blu rays that I could not use!!

Oh thanks. Didn't think about that. Well, it's enclosure then.

Have you seen the KOFXIV themes?
The dynamic one is pretty pretty cool.
