LoL Pro Faker Signs Up For Twitch, Immediately Breaks Record (245k concurrent)

18, during high school every person in my extended friend circle knew faker as "that Korean guy who's real good at league of legends" regardless of their interest in videogames

this may be due to me being Asian and hanging out with other asians but people definitely knew who faker was

I'm 28, but I can promise you I wouldn't know who these people were outside of the FGC if I didn't frequent Twitch a lot and didn't follow people on twitter that know about this stuff.

I was really hoping it was a guy who faked being really good and tricked everyone into watching. Disappointed.

I think people are having a hard time parsing the OP.

LoL = league of legends
Pro = professional player
Faker = the player's handle

Professional "League of Legends" "Electronic sports" player with the alias "Faker" signs up for streaming service Twitch, immediately breaks records (250 000 are actually watching someone else play a video game(?!))

Better thread title for the oldies.

<3 you GAF

What the hell makes a League of Legends player "exciting"?

I guess if you are into the game and understand it's rules it's exicting. Just like with sports. Watching baseball or football (American) also does nothing for me but it's mainly because I only understand the very basic rules.

That's cool, I wonder if his apparent skill would make streaming games interesting to watch.

Sometimes I forget how much of a bubble GAF really is.

It's true, we know what an eSport is. Outside of gaming circles, no one knows what LoL/Twitch/etc are.

I think anyone can see why a huge touchdown is exciting, even without knowing the rules. There's a physicality to it that anyone can appreciate.

I wonder what the average age ratio on gaf would skew because any gamer my age would know who faker was regardless of what games they played

There have been threads polling this, iirc most of gaf is in the late 20s/early 30s and there are more older than that range than there are younger.

I'm 21 and I don't know who Faker is though. The only LoL players I know of are those who are big twitch streamers.

Its that, but also the dude is the best in a field of like 80 million other people. That is impressive no matter what you are doing.

What's with all the "Who?" replies in all these thread? It literally takes you less time to Google the name than to shitpost about it. Even as a joke it's old and was never funny to begin with.

I'm actually surprised that the top tier players don't do this more. It's a license to print money and they're going to be playing anyway so why not.

Most of them do, but the ones from China and Korea usually have contracts to different streaming platforms.

Yeah, that's an impressing number. Twitch is probably immediately partnering him, because there is no chance that Twitch will leave all that money on the table.

Also, I have no clue who he is. I don't follow LoL, but many other eSports. No need to fight each other, because you know him or don't. lol

I've tried to watch a few LoL matches before but I don't see the appeal at all. It's just so boring to watch as someone without an intimate knowledge of the game.

I am always surprised how GAF is such a known and big gaming forum but is so behind on Esports in general or there is no interest for it on here.

I played not 1 LoL match since 2011 or 2012 I think, watched some tournaments( but never was invested in the LoL scene) though and I immediately knew who Faker is and for what team he plays.

On topic, it is crazy, I think he would have had even more viewers if he would have allowed English language in his chat. Twitch will only get bigger if all of these big names are going to stream there exclusively

Yes, it's insane how people don't know such luminary figures like [Professional Korean MOBA player]. What is this, the Cretacious period?

Well I mean 400 million people watched last years finals. That is more than Superbowls and other major sporting events isn't it?
Edit: I cant read. Watch me get rekt below.

It's pathetic right? So many people trying to downplay the news by shitposting they don't know who it is.

So the one-eyed man in the land of the blind, basically.

Now this is something. Gaming takes no skill?

I mean like i barely know about LoL mobas and its esports but i know about Faker.
The guys a brand name in esports.

Surprised he wasnt on twitch already.

not really...most people see LoL and won't think of anything beyond (laugh out loud). look at all the replies to this thread where people got confused by the thread title
no? At least in a proper context, LoL is league of legends for actual millions of people

i've personally heard the tag before, but it's really not that hard for a person whose friends are all console-centric gamers to know absolutely nothing about LoL and its competitive environment. I only know who he is because I spend too much time online.

I assume a good chunk of their time is also spent on scrimmming with their teams and travelling to LANs. Seagull didn't stream much when he was with NRG on OGN Apex for instance.

GAF has a large majority who are focused on console-based traditional games. League of Legends is neither a traditional game nor is it available on consoles. Heck, as recently as 2013, the game was barely known here.

Citation needed. Official website says 43 million "unique" viewers (isn't the case as IPs change, either willingly or unwillingly).

http://www.lolesports.com/en_US/articles/2016-league-legends-world-championship-numbers

holy shit, 400 million people watched 1 game of LoL at the same time?
Nah, 14.7 million concurrent viewers was the peak (look at link).

thats just insane. A lot of the streamers I watch average between 12k-30k viewers, and get as high as 60k on special occasion with a brand new game out. 245k blows my mind lol

his team had a contract with another streaming site Azubu, that contract is over now so they've all headed to twitch

You haven't been on Douyu yet (one of the Chinese streaming sites). In that case, the number doesn't seem high, but talk is, Douyu's numbers aren't real. So who knows.

It was 43 million.

But let's say it was 400 million, over a BILLION people watched the 2014 world cup finals, and I still don't expect those who don't follow soccer to know who are considered to be the best players.

It's not insane that some of us don't know who Faker is.
