What are your expectations for Horizon Zero Dawn?

truly101

I got grudge sucked!
I've been listening to a few podcasts that have discussed the HZD event from a week ago and while most impressions seem to be positive, there was one where the person was expecting HZD to be this new and different thing and was surprised that it played similar to other open world games like Far Cry.

I wonder how many people here, for example, are really expecting the game to be this new experience and the game just isn't going to live up to that. I'm pretty stoked for it but I'm expecting a good looking well playing open world game that uses most of those open world conventions we've seen employed time and again. As long as its done well and in the context of the world they present I'm fine with that (example being climbing those tall neck things and hacking it to reveal more of the map, sort of like your typical ubi tower).

That being said, I'm expecting the usual accoutrements that go with this style of game; fetch quests, hunts, crafting and resource gathering. And I'm expecting these things to take up a fairly substantial part of the game. I just wonder if anyone is expecting the game to eschew those conventions, only to be disappointed when it doesnt (and it won't)

Agile hunter combat & tougher than expected enemies will be a sweet base for an open world action RPG.

I'm intrigued that Guerrilla don't want to tutorialize it that much and consciously keep the number of objects on the map low (this is basically going the opposite direction of i.e Ubisoft). In many ways it seems like they have taken a good look at todays open world games and trimmed their fat, cut them down to their core and polished these aspects to a high shine.

I expect people to get a good liking for Aloy and the game universe w/the mix of tribal culture & deep sci-fi (some of those dungeons seemed super advanced). Guerrilla being an Amsterdam based studio will bring a slightly different personality to what we're normally used to. The varied and well done ethnicities of the cast seems promising.

Far Cry clone with varied gameplay but lacking in novelty, and a poor sci fi story with no real strength or value outside the game proper.

Real pretty tho

Its not nearly my most hyped game this year but I expect a fun sci-fi action adventure game that is reminiscent of a lot of open world action adventure games. I'm not picking it up anywhere near day 1 but I think it will review well.

a bit overrated but it'll be a major hit for Sony and the start of a new franchise...still won't beat Bloodborne for the title of best game on the PS4 though

Looks kind of run of the mill open world game with the usual RPG elements. Haven't really been keeping up recently. It's Guerrilla so I expect it to look pretty but suck otherwise, would love for reviews to prove me wrong.

My expectations are low I suppose.
Fuck humans, robot dinosaurs should be the playable characters.

It's likely going to be a great game. Praised for its intense combat and excellent visual fidelity. Praise will be lavished on the detailed enemy designs and the Cauldrons providing satisfying rewards.

Some complaints about repetition will be present as well as some complaints about the shallowness of some mechanics but the core design of the game will likely be seen as solid and an excellent step forward for Guerrilla Games.

As for story, it's anyone's guess to be honest, I predict most will really like Aloy overall and kinda be bored with everyone else in comparison to how enamoring the setting is. The antagonists are going to be shallow as hell though, I can tell this a mile away unless Guerrilla subverts my expectations in a huge way.

It's gonna be a real great game that'll be occasionally bogged down with some bad writing and voice acting, and maybe a touch bit too long than it needs be (though that last part is based on my experience with Far Cry likes and not really what I saw of the game itself).

Amazing protagonist, beautiful graphics, very creative design, incredibly repetitive gameplay and lots of problems that if fixed will make Horizon Zero Dusk some of the best games ever made

I'm expecting it to be a great game that will eventually lead to an even better sequel. I've not seen anything I don't like in the footage available.

I am hoping it will be the best parts of FC3 without the boring bits. I have very high hopes for it, especially since it is the first 2017 release that I will be playing.

I expect I'm gonna wait until full play through reviews from people I trust before I buy it. I also expect I will lose absolutely nothing by doing so, and MIGHT save myself from wasting $60.

You not keeping up is reflected in your comments very clearly.

Some of the gameplay systems are intriguing enough (namely, the different ways in which you can take down enemies) that I might pick it up later down the road when it goes on sale. However, there's a lot of it that seems to be very by-the-numbers as far as open world games go, and I don't really care much for typical open world game design to begin with, so my expectations aren't super high.

My expectations are tempered. I don't see anything here outside of the way its dressed up to get my knickers in a twist. From what I've watched, I can't even say that it looked all that engaging.
I also expect them to do a better job with the story than their other games, but that's a really low bar to trip over.
Still, I would love for it to not just be another pretty Playstation game, and do well.

Its Guerrilla. They've made flashy games and exciting games but never really a fun game - we'll see.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to this. I have zero reason to expect anything different from them.

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
Run of the mill open world ARPG with phenomenal graphics and good art/enemy design.

Being a GG joint, I expect a terrible story and bad dialogue to go with it.

Gameplay is competent and fun but nothing revolutionary.

HZD was the game I was most excited about last year before it was delayed and I must admit that my excitement had cooled off (still very much excited to play this game tho)

This may be a stretch and I may very well end up disappointed but I fully expect this to be Sony's next big franchise akin to Uncharted. I believe Sony and ND that after the Uncharted Lost Legacy we won't see an Uncharted games in a while and I'm going to assume that Sony as a publisher will be banking on HZD and Guerilla to be the next big thing. I'm not expecting anything revolutionary in terms of gameplay or even narrative but I am expecting a solid open world RPG with awesome set pieces.

I fully expect the narrative to be better than anything Guerilla has put out before. They hired Fallout New Vegas scribe John Gonzalez and I hope him and his team deliver.

I expect it to have better execution and story than those other similar open world games.

Perhaps even almost as good as The Witcher 3.
Almost.

An amazing action/RPG with intense battles against aggressive enemies, intriguing secrets, challenging dungeons, beautiful vistas, and destructibility.

My expectations are exactly as what the podcaster described -- A conventional open-world game in the vein of a Far Cry or (lesser) Witcher 3. I've yet to see anything new or original in terms of game play, but the appeal is it's setting and visual fidelity.

Great monster hunter lite combat, although more focused on ranged and traps. Seems like targeting certain parts of their bodies will be beneficial and reap rewards like MH.

I also expect great graphics and with a cool world to explore. Gear to collect, parts to collect to craft stuff. I think the story will be okay, but the like ability of Aloy and maybe some of the supporting cast will make it compelling. Lots of side quests and other distractions.

I'm not expecting a revolution, just a really well made game with intense combat.

I'm curious, has anyone involved in the production of this game ever implied that it was trying to reinvent the proverbial wheel with regards to open world RPGs? Because if they have, I've never seen it mentioned, so I'm confused about where some people get their ideas about what Horizon is actually trying to do... which appears to be just presenting a damn fine looking action RPG.

If anyone was genuinely going into this expecting it to try and rewrite the book for how games like this are designed (and I don't believe for a second that anyone could be so ill-informed as to really expect that), then that's their mistake I'm afraid.
