I've received games that early accidentally but not hardware. This stuff sits in warehouses for weeks before release so it's not that hard to believe. This case is a different story.

I got a GBA about 3 weeks early when they launched in the US due to retailer error.

Edit: Bought it at the register, there was apparently no sell-by-date on the package in the stock rooms, and the systems were not advanced enough at the time to enforce the street date. This was way back though, and I was like 11 or 12 years old and I had a pre-order card.

What happen to that boy?

He was posting pics we put a clap into that boy

i'm sure it's been mentioned, but man is that a PS4 looking UI.

Not a bad thing mind you, but it's hilariously close.

Nintendo released a statement: http://m.ign.com/articles/2017/02/17/nintendo-switch-operating-system-menu-details-leak

"Earlier this week, individuals claimed to prematurely purchase a small number of Nintendo Switch systems from an unspecified retailer. Nintendo has determined these units were stolen in an isolated incident by employees of a U.S. distributor, with one system being illegally resold. The individuals involved have been identified, terminated from their place of employment and are under investigation by local law enforcement authorities on criminal charges.
Nintendo Switch will launch worldwide on March 3, 2017, and we look forward to everyone being able to discover the wonders of the new system for themselves at that time."

Case closed I guess.

And that is why if you receive something like this early in a not so legitimate manner you do everything in your power to stay anonymous if you are going to provide information.

So if hiphoptherobot didn't post the video, that wouldn't have led to someone reporting him and Nintendo would have been none the wiser?

I think he was trying to drum up interest for his sale; he tried to pawn it off on reddit.

Not the smartest move in retrospect but there you go.

Nintendo might of been able to track the serial number of the missing units, deactivated them, and the thing could have been bricked.

In the end, no harm has been done, and Nintendo has their property back.

Highly likely they still would have tracked it the second it went online given Nintendo will know the serial numbers on the consoles missing and the hardware ID when connected online.

Yes, even unknowingly isnt exactly legal

Not really.

If they can prove you could have reasonably suspected it was stolen then you might have some explaining to do (which would apply here I would have thought beinf the syatem isnt even out yet that would raise eyebrows).

But its not illegal for you to own something you purchased and had no way of knowing it was stolen. It just means it will be taken back and returned to the owner or kept by some department somewherel but you wont be refunded or given any compensation, you're out whatever you oaid or traded or whatever it was you did to get the item to begin with, in which case you have to track down whoever sold you the item and sue them to get anything back.

So this proves that hiphop did not steal it and likely/possibly didnt know it was stolen.
Him trying to resell it originall was suggested to him by half of GAF, so thats no proof he knew either.

I think he deserves the benefit of doubt.
not originally, no. he tried to sell it long before the ui video/thread was posted here. No one was interested/thought it was a scam until he started posting video proof. Don't try to group me in with this fuckery. i just wanted more info on the wifi web login

heheh

Harm was done. Stock was stolen and opened. Nintendo cannot sell as new now. Nintendo has lost money due to it.

That's true but it's pocket money for Nintendo, especially in the context of such a launch where they expect to sell millions of it.

I think it's a much bigger loss the fact that the UI details and whatnot got revealed by someone, when, for better or worse, Nintendo surely wanted to control that message.

Maybe they have/had a Direct planned, or exclusivity agreement with someone, to reveal details like the UI and other features. And that rollout is off the rails now.

Reminds me of the iPhone 4 reveal which got leaked by the stolen phone in the bar. At the official reveal they said 'so some of you may have seen this...'.

Man all the details here are now confusing, but at least it removes any little doubt I had from it being a really really well done fake leak.

You actually thought the packaged parts, the manuals, the working Switch hardware with a working screen and working LEDs, the UI videos with functional touchscreen, and unboxing of retail packaging could have still been all an elaborate fake?

Really?

Haha yeah, thought the same. Nintendo can only hope it means such a good omen for the Switch as well (minus antennagate).

People are still expecting a Direct to cover the system features? Given how barebones the UI is, I really don't think there's anything worthy of dedicating a Direct to. As most I'd expect a video covering the smartphone app like the Bowser parental controls video.

Nintendo also probably lost a huge chunk of money in wages for people to crosscheck the entire stock and distribution system of Switches.

As well as future preventative measures / negotiations with the company where the theft happened / loss of future stock and profit for that company if a single other issue happens

Something still feels off about all this, in a 'didn't get caught and don't want to temp fate about people finding out the full details' kinda way.
I do not believe for one second that a retailer shipped the console, which would mean that whoever sold it him obviously did so under the table and thus he was at the very least partially aware.

:lol these two things would've happened regardless. Companies operate around shrink all the time and this isn't significant

yah, its a bit of a reach to call this "harm". its something Nintendo has accounted for most definitely

Lol, you mean like running the serial number through a database search?

Is Nintendo still using paper?

I'd consider that one or more of these units may have been people's pre-orders though. I don't care about Nintendo's loss, but screwing over paying customers is a different story.

It's not like who he bought it from would tell him it was stolen. It could've just been something like "Hey we accidently got shipped some consoles early. Do you want to buy one?". Not that hard to believe.

We'll probably never know where he bought it from so it'll always be nothing but speculation. Nintendo seems satisfied things are taken care of so it should be good enough for us.

It is very hard to believe and no one believed that he got shipped anything several weeks early?

Before the full unboxing and the dock was shown everyone I spoke with about it was confident it was being opened up in the bathroom/breakroom of a retail outlet or distribution center. Or would have had to have been slipped out in a jacket pocket without most of the accessories or charge cable

Maybe it only got stolen for the second video, I guess Nintendo's handling it now but I'm quite glad they actually track their serial numbers competently and people didn't get away with their absolutely flaky excuses

HipHop used the moderator interview to say he planned on selling the Switch early for a profit to pay bills. That doesn't really strengthen my positive instincts on the matter. Not that I really care or have some investment in the matter, I'm glad to have gotten a peek at the interface.
