Embargo on Nintendo Switch console/games previews lift on February 23th / March 1st

I can't see Zelda getting a high general review score to be honest (i.e. above 85). Critics are a LOT harder on games nowadays and I think sentiment towards Nintendo as a whole has removed much of the nostalgia bias some previous reviews had.
XCX Got 84. Is a easy 90s. Its Zelda Dude........

It'll be interesting to see if the switch to a open world formula is a good thing or not for the franchise.

So Zelda is either terrible or great, based on the strange dates Nintendo has chosen.

I don't think this is the purpose of the embargos in most cases. They probably want to avoid reviewers rushing to put their reviews out there first. Also having reviews just before release help for the game's momentum and the Switch launch in general. On March 1 Switch games reviews will be everywhere.

"It's Zelda" shouldn't really be considered in this case because really, it's not Zelda. It's changing so much that anything can happen, but I'm hedging my bets on it performing worse than previous games in terms of reviews.

Wonder if video footage is allowed as part of the "previews."

Will GiantBomb be able to do a livestream of Switch games on the 23rd, or the 1st?

I'm guessing the 1st if they're able to go all in and show everything versus being limited by the the preview guidelines.

My Switch will probably have shipped by March 1st. I guess there is no getting off this switch & zelda train. Fingers crossed that Zelda is awesome. Otherwise, this is gonna be hard $400 pill to swallow.

Crap. I was really hoping for reviews of Zelda before Horizon comes out so I could figure out if I really want to keep my Switch preorder for day 1 or go all in on Horizon day 1... I just can't get myself to buy both since they are so close in release date

I'm interested in how the Switch's portable nature may influence reviewers' jobs/impressions, what with being able to take the titles anywhere they go, numerous flights and whatnot included.

I am hoping for low meta score(~80) for zelda and violent meltdowns. Please make it happen.

mario kart 8 (imo undeniably one of nintendo's best games ever made) got an 88.

i'm expecting it to be in the 90s but i don't think that's "easy" anymore.
A lot of the MK8 reviews had lower scores because of battle mode. I agree that it's one of the best games ever made.

If reviewers got the game on March 2nd, then it'd be more likely terrible- as it stands, with reviewers having the switch now, I think they just want as much time to the reviewers as possible. I think it'll be mid-90s, based on what I've seen (and a touch of my own hype)

NintendoForce just tweeted the Zelda preview embargo ends Feb 24, while the reviews can be posted March 2. Seems to be in line with what others told me. Good to get more confirmation.

Horizon has made me realize how hard it is going to be for a game to get in the mid to high 90s in the modern day reviewing environment. Just some simple 4/5 scores (which is a great score still) can weigh down a games average a lot. If any game is going to break through this gen, I hope and believe it can be Breathe of the Wild.

I think that gaming journalism has evolved for the better over the last few years. It is indeed far more difficult for a title to reach 90+ Metacritic nowadays, but when a game DOES reach that milestone, you can be absolutely sure that it's an amazing experience. Examples over the last few years are The Witcher 3 (92), Bloodborne (92), Uncharted 4 (93), and Overwatch (90). I expect and hope that BotW will be the next title to top 90.

As far as I've seen, everyone who's played Zelda at preview events has raved about it. I'd be surprised if scores are low.

interesting. I am guessing they don't want the other games to get drown out by Zelda hype, so the previews/reviews for those games come out a day early

I think Zelda will be good. It's gotten positive remarks in previews. However anybody going in expecting it to be the best Zelda game is fucking insane.

Yeah, this is exactly what I am saying.

Uncharted 4 alone still shows me how hype can push a game. Game was good but not anywhere close to better than W3 and Bloodborne good. Zelda should hit at least 90. I don't Mario has a shot at matching Galaxy scores though.

Nintendo Direct wouldn't make much sense, journalists will provide all the coverage Nintendo need. A post launch one giving us a glimpse of the future lineup would be nice.

Yeah after this past weekend of madness had me thinking this is how it'll go down.

good point.

agreed. uncharted 4 is definitely something - it's a very special game with incredible attention paid to detail and gorgeous graphics. but i don't think i would rate it as highly as bloodborne and overwatch, for example.

It's sad that people want games to score low so they can have 15 minutes of internet fun

it's shocking to me. Review threads are never "glorious" to be honest. People want that nice 15 of "hahaha meltdown" about something that many people are expecting for years.

Games are also nowhere near comparable, so that is not really a good way of going about it (for example, my preference for jrpgs means that the typical 75-80 jrpg gives more enjoyment to me than UC4 would, but that doesn't mean UC4 should be <75).

Your opinion <> fact. Also how can you compare these? Totally different genres doing totally different things.
i think uncharted 4 suffers from poor pacing and a huge story retcon that people didn't really consider when reviewing because the game is overwhelming in how aesthetically impressive it is. gorgeous visuals, excellent sound, wonderful acting and direction... those things ARE amazing. the gameplay and story pacing are not, and i think that when looked back upon the reception will be lower.

not talking bioshock infinite levels of "come to think of it..." but i don't think it will be remembered as fondly as uc2 for example. guess we'll have to see :p

Eh 88 is pretty par for the course when it comes to MK, and 8 can easily be dinged for screwing up battle mode and not adding much new to the formula.

Considering it's taking what I consider to be the entire development of the series into account including most of the best lessons learned, I would not be surprised if it were indeed the best Zelda game for me.
