'Tales of' Producer Hideo Baba Talks About His New Studio/Project With Square Enix

screenshot_821.png

I was entrusted with a big IP at my previous position, but while doing business development outside of video games, I thought it was about time to pass the baton to my juniors, and at a turning point, I decided to leave the company.
When I thought about how many more games I'll be able to make in the future, I thought that I wanted to try again among many major players in the RPG world. That's why I knocked at the gates of Square Enix last October.
Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda: ”I would like him to make a new IP while discovering new talent."
Studio Istolia is a company of craftsmen that will create stories, which is the origin of its name.
The company mascot was designed by Toshiyuki Itahana, who did the character design for the Chocobo series. It's still without a name, but I would like it if this character appears in future games.
I would like to express ”kindness" and ”warmth" as the setting for the new title we're making now. It won't have a bloodthirsty atmosphere, I want to make a game where you can think, ”I want to enter that warm world as soon as possible."
I would like to express the world based on the anime and comics I've come to know since I was little.
In returning to fantasy origins, I'm currently planning to make a straightforward, middle-fantasy RPG. The world will have various races, such as Norse mythology, dwarfs, and elves.

I don't want to change the ”Baba-ness," such as depicting the growth of the characters and the strength of the message.
(When will it be released?) At this point...
(What platforms will it be released for?) I don't know what it will become in the end, but we have a strong desire to stick with stationary consoles. However, I also want to consider platforms with business chances, including smartphones.
Of course, I also want to take on expansion overseas.

Here is the thread discussing the new IP from his Studio.

Thanks for making this thread.

Some good info in here - consoles, good, Baba's signature approach, good (seems like he'll still use the 'RPG to blahblah' descriptions) Norse mythology, very good.

I like. Bring it to me, Baba and best of luck on this venture.

Sounds like he wants to continue producing Tales but with a new team at Square Enix.

Yup. Pretty much this is what I'm getting from the excerpts. He most likely wasn't happy with the working atmosphere and the bureaucracy over at Bamco and now he will have more liberties than working there.

Saying all the good things so far.

Now, I await the first official announcement of the studio's debut game.

If this is the case, I'm interested in seeing how this game will end up versus how the Tales franchise continues.

Was he still around when Berseria was in development? Because if him being gone is gets us Berseria, good riddance. The series was stagnating for the last decade at least.

I need Dat here but I'm pretty sure he had extremely minimal if pretty much non-existent involvement with Berseria iirc. If this is the case then he most likely was building his business proposal for SE during that time. lol.

According to Wikipedia, he was the Producer of Zestiria, but not the one for Berseria. So unless he worked on Berseria as something unlisted, he had nothing to do with it. At least its actual development. It's clear that they had some plans for Berseria when making Zestiria, at least the common lore.

he wants to continue the same trajectory of the tales games at another company it seems.

hopefully SE will let his team or whoever he will be managing use UE4

be careful saying that, you might be jumped on for implying he was semi responsible for keeping the series in a polished state

Funny considering what happened to Star Ocean... at Square Enix!

Regarding Berseria he was just listed as Brand Manager and had probably not much involvement with the title.

I like what I'm reading here. If this basically just ends up being a bigger budget Tales of game but at Square Enix I'll be pleased.

Give me Star Ocean 4 with a better story???

triAce was a studio that was bigger than the overall size of the Tales team at Bamco, and given roughly the same amount of time to develop SO5 as per a usual Tales game afawk.

SO5 was poor game even compared by Tales standards.

Hopefully Square will be able to give him the freedom and resources he needs. I hope he continues to make multiplayer co-op RPGs. "Tales of" series are pretty much the only games where I can get that fix anymore.

Which is amazing. Tales isn't a bad series, but it's become so commercialized by Scamco that it's starting to affect the story and characters. A fresh start is a great idea

It would be funny if they gave his team the star ocean IP after SO5 and it followed the style of tales

i don't know, its always had annual releases...how much more commercialized has it really gotten? They've always really not broken any sort of mold outside of being safe entrees for RPG fans to get into

Disappointing to hear it'll have a Norse theme.

Otherwise, Baba is a great fit for SE. They could really use an annual ~1.5 year cycle, Tales-like series to space out their huge releases.

Hey id kill for a tales game that doesnt look its still using ps2 as its base platform.
and i hope whoever did the combat sfx for graces, zesty and berseria isnt tagging along.
those are some of the blandest and cheapest looking effects ive ever seen .

Uh.... Sorry to break the news but they're probably trying to get away from this if anything.

EDIT:

I would like to note that Baba has a habit of being very... on the nose when it comes to explaining what his games are going to be really about in interviews before announcements and stuff.

I won't say no to a reskinned Tales of game with higher budget, better animation and Ni no Kuni/GG Xrd level character models in terms of 2D art to 3D art.

Makes me wonder if this move was due to his getting burned by the response to Zestiria. I know how that game turned out wasn't entirely his fault, but the Alisha response really seemed to bother him.

Star Ocean has never been a good series though. It literally has not had a single good game in 5 entries. I feel like people keep forgetting this.

Did you forget Star ocean 2 and 3?

SO2 was great game overall. SO3 was great in every aspect except the story.

even that was good, but it depends on whether or not one likes the twist. i didn't care about conforming to the rest of the games so it was a non issue for me

The narrative from the people who hate Zestiria with the fiery passion of a thousand suns is that negative reception to Zestiria caused him to get "promoted" (ie pushed out of a position where he had any creative control over Tales,) which is supported by the fact that Berseria is the first major Tales game in a while that he didn't have any sort of credit on. Would certainly be a logical reason to start looking for another job, at any rate.

The only thing accurate about this post is the words being spelled correctly. :p

Anyway. How long is something like this going to take? I'm thinking a 2020 title, so we're seeing what's possibly a PS5 title here? No way they get it out before then, right?

I thought the gameplay in SO4 was also well received, it's just that all the other aspects took an even bigger nosedive? I'm not too familiar with the franchise though. Anyway, I don't think Star Ocean tripping up has any indication of the quality of this new IP that likely has a lot of spirit from the Tales franchise.

I'm more interested in comparing project Prelude Rune and the next Tales game. I know Berseria didn't have him on it but the game started development in 2014 and he was still taking a supervisory role in the franchise itself. Also Berseria was still developed with the PS3 taken into consideration and we know the next title won't be so I feel like both companies are starting on a clean slate or so to speak.

Subjective. I'm clearly not one of those people you mention, because SO2 was easily one of my favorite PSX RPGs. In fact, I just replayed the PSP version at the tail end of 2015.

Star ocean's 4 issue was def the plot and the characters, kay

But i agree that the gameplay itself was ok, infact it was basically just star ocean 3's for the most part

Really like what I am reading here, hope he can establish a new franchise that takes the best of tales as its essence. Would be awesome since I missed the boat on Star Ocean and the recent one (SO5) really sucked imo.

Makes one wonder what "Tales" is to him. He always seemed somewhat detached from development (likely due to coming from marketing) and many of the things he mentions (anime style, warmth, fantasy origin) Tales actually moved away from during his time as producer. And the part of the staff that left during the closure of Tales Studio was that following that classic Tales style. His game likely will be similar to Tales as far as the focus on characters goes, everything else likely depends on who he gets. May turn into another Arc Rise Fantasia for all we know. =P

He was only credited as series producer for Berseria, with there being even a separate series supervisor/management in Tanaka.

I bet we'll get a lesson on racism with the subtlety of a freight train.

To be fair that was before his time.

The focus on story is the one thing Tales arguably improved under him, though Berseria (without his involvement) is the first game where this came to fruition in a polished actually satisfying package.

I always figured it was Baba pushing for this sort of thing, and not the other way around :/ He's the one who implemented the 'complete' ports ~1 year after launch to other consoles, etc.

Well at least this time they're going for a action rpg/real time battle system.

What he describes is something more in line with Tales of Hearts which was the first entry where he was involved from start to finish.
