Some good rhetoric for once. Let's hope he doesn't abandon it after this.

Trump denounces anti-Semitic attacks as 'horrible'

WASHINGTON — Touring a new museum devoted to African-American history, President Trump said Tuesday he will do what he can to improve race relations and also denounced a series of recent threats and vandalism aimed at Jews.

“The anti-Semitic threats targeting our Jewish community and community centers are horrible and are painful, and a very sad reminder of the work that still must be done to root out hate and prejudice and evil," Trump said after touring the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

In an earlier interview on MSNBC, Trump said that "Anti-Semitism is horrible, and it's going stop and it has to stop,."

Trump had been criticized for passing up previous chances to denounce a spate of recent anti-Semitic incidents that range from desecration of a Jewish cemetery to Jewish community centers. Some of the critics noted that Trump's presidential campaign last year seemed to attract an unusually high number of anti-Semites and white nationalists.

His critics included 2016 opponent Hillary Clinton, who tweeted: "JCC threats, cemetery desecration & online attacks are so troubling & they need to be stopped. Everyone must speak out, starting w/ @POTUS."

As for race relations in general, Trump told MSNBC that they have improved and worsened over time, and that he would seek betterment in a nation that is very divided politically, particularly over the president.

"Today and every day of my presidency," Trump said in his public remarks, "I pledge to do everything I can to continue that promise of freedom for African-Americans and for every American. So important, nothing more important."
Trump cited Douglass and other civil rights icons like Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, Booker T. Washington, and Martin Luther King, Jr., in his remarks at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, which he described as "a beautiful tribute to so many American heroes."

Institutions like the museum can help bridge the racial divide, Trump said after a tour in which he praised a number of exhibits.

"This is about love," Trump told MSNBC. "This building is about love."

In his public remarks, Trump cited the crowds that have flocked to the African-American museum: "It's doing so well that everybody is talking about it."
better late than never if old

Actions speak louder than words, but I'll still be happy to hear positive words come out of his mouth. I just know to be extremely cautiously optimistic.

Optimism is giving these words too much credit. It's blatantly clear what the Trump cabinet stands for, and it sure as fuck isn't about "love".

Talk is cheap.

Seriously. With Sessions as AG, his comments about "stop and frisk" and dangerous inner cities like "Chicago", & spending the bulk of Obama's presidency denying his citizenship, this basically means nothing. And it's easy shit. People love to use MLK, Rosa Parks, Booker T Washington as exemplars and claim they're heroes. Of course they were. But it's an entirely other thing to actually understand what they stood for and reflect that in the modern age. Trump and his actions before his presidency and currently shows he holds zero of their values.

He's a professional conman. he tells everyone what they want to hear. He's not turning into Obama overnight. Or worse, he does, every 10 minutes when he feels like he's gonna gain something from that.

An extensively thought out and planned piece of rhetoric that shouldn't have needed any significant planning or thinking. He should have said this from the start, it's too late.

Come on, when he was asked about anti-semitic attacks in the US at his press conference instead of condemning he said it was an offensive question and "the other side" was responsible for all of that.

Trump telling his audience exactly what they want to hear, but he doesn't mean a goddamn thing he says.

When on the campaign he was talking to his audience, hence his car not to disparage African Americans. But who is his audience here? Exactly.

Here's some more bullshit coming from Trump: http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/320412-trump-anti-semitism-has-to-stop

The president insisted he has spoken out against anti-Semitism “whenever I get a chance,” even though he has refused to confront the issue directly on multiple occasions.

"This tour was a meaningful reminder of why we have to fight bigotry, intolerance and hatred in all of its very ugly forms," he said later. "The anti-Semitic threats targeting our Jewish community and community centers are horrible and are a painful and a very sad reminder of the work that still must be done to root out hate and prejudice and evil."

Also lets not pretend trump's idea of racial harmony isn't black guys smiling and accepting their oppression without making noise while white people reap the benefits while pretending nothing is wrong

He's saying what should have been said well over a year ago. He's instead chosen to be critical of bullshit until today.

Is it better than nothing or equivalent to nothing? I'm sensing the sentiment here is that it's the latter, and probably justifiably so

It's the equivalent to nothing. If I say "Jesus was a great man, son of God, my savior, and as a christian it's my job to act just like he would during my time on earth" yet do nothing about child sexual abuse, harshly punish women for being sex workers and do my best to ruin the lives of the poor, it really means diddly squat.

Trump will say whatever the fuck depending on who has his ear. He has no convictions. This is the same administration that snubbed Jews from its holocaust remembrance statement.

He is end goal is transparent.

He's being accused of riding the flames of anti-semitism and racism to fuel his campaign and is trying to deflect in the most obvious way "WITHOUT" making any significant impact to help or contribute.

Empty words.
