Went for a longer drive yesterday with my newly installed Milltek non-resonated non-valved catback and the volume and drone is unbearable to me. Going back to stock catback non-resonated with valves on, this Wednesday.

Guess it is true that hatchbacks / wagons have the "entire exhaust system under the passenger cabin" so to speak so the exhaust noises are very apparent. Doesn't help that the MK7 R just doesn't make good sounds. Oh well, hope I can sell this thing quickly.

Any car where the trunk or hatch space is exposed to the driver will have unbearable amounts of drone. 350Zs and 370Zs with the wrong exhaust were absolutely horrible. In most other cars, the trunk acts as a second barrier that tones down a lot of the drone, seeing as how trunks are heavily carpeted, insulated, closed off from the cabin, AND have accessories stored (including a tire).

Hatches? Nope. Nothing. A direct entrance to your ear. LOL.

A friend of mine had the borla catback for his 7R and it sounded great. I didn't have a chance to ride in it with that setup though so no word on drone but I believe it was valved although coded to be open all the time. He went through a couple different exhaust setups before settling with the borla.

If your tires are directional you can just do one side at a time

Borla catbacks are probably some of the best sounding ones for the golf. I've heard good things of awe tuning's catback as well. I hate drone and extremely shitty loud cars.

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?
I set the GPS to warn me anytime I go 6mph over the speed limit.

It's gone off about 40 times in 150 miles of driving :-/

***

Took my mom out for a spin this weekend. Still only at ~400 miles, so didn't want to get on it too much. That said, took it from a rolling start at ~5mph on an on-ramp to ~4K rpm, shift to 2nd, hit about 4K rpm .... .... and we're speeding, lmao

Half throttle and the back end already starts squirming. I'm doing my damnest to "respect the beast." Just isn't worth getting cocky in.

Isn't having nuclear amounts of horsepower under your right foot just the coolest thing ever? Hehe.

Well obviously, you've got 707hp, a shit ton of torque but only 275 tires in the rear which is hilarious.

Isn't having nuclear amounts of horsepower under your right foot just the coolest thing ever? Hehe.

Abs-fucking-lutely. I had a shit-eating grin on my face getting it up to 85mph without even pushing it, let alone launch control. It's so patently absurd the gobs or torque this has.

My father has a 1000+ hp Chevelle he's built and rebuilt and rebuilt again - the whole front end of the thing launches two feet off the ground at the strip. That thing is scary as hell. It feels like you're on a rocket ship falling apart. The Hellcat barely shakes. It's like it's not even trying.

Lmao 275's in the rear? Had to look it up for myself. That is a fucking joke, a very dangerous one. My M5 has 250 less BHP at the least and defintely half of the peak torque of the Hellcat. And I run 275's all around... With 700 BHP I'd expect at least 305's, ideally 325-345mm of tire. You're fucked if that thing starts to spin, because it's so easy to overwhelm that kind of tire with that kind of torque.

Yeah also the 485hp Challenger Scat Pack comes with 245s in the rear.

To be fair to Dodge though, they're just following Toyota's approach to the Toyobaru by putting shitty Prius tires on it.

If they put 305's or higher on it then the car might actually have grip!! But putting 275's on it let's people do burnouts and shit, and since burnouts are the selling point of the Hellcat, that's probably why they put shitty tires on it.

Sweet haul, but is that really a 2015? I thought they switched fully to Genesis branding this year or last. And it looks brand new. How many miles on it?

Yeah, it's a 2015. This one is considered a "Gen 2" model while the new exclusive Genesis brand is its evolution. And yes, this one was well-kept. 35k miles on it which is higher than I wanted, yet it was within the budget.

Congrats you two. We have some great looking rides in this thread! Enjoy them.

My MIL is trying to convince my wife to hijack the car multiple times/week. LoL, we share equally and don't need your input! Actually, the wife is content to drive our older vehicle to work since I have the long commute. We'll see.

Wow, that's a looker. Congratulations! I think you picked a great car. Just watched a few video reviews of it online.

Yeah, I have been reading reviews *AFTER* the purchase. Genesis is supposed to be in competition with the E-class Benz or the BMW 500, but $15k less. Interesting.

Serious, that interior looks like a fantastic place to be.

Yes. I can sit in this car the same way I do on the sofa all slouched and sprawled out and still have plenty of room. More gadgets than I even know what to do with.

Yup, this Milltek has me dreading taking the car out now. Ear splitting drone that stays with me long after the drive is done.

AWE switchpath exhaust with 102mm diamond black round tips was the original plan, but the exorbitant price is really hard to stomach.

Awesome! :)
There is little to fear about constant speeds in the daily commute as it is mostly stop and go at the moment (equally bad, I know). Accumulated average speed is less than 45km/h for the 700-ish kilometers.

For the few and far between moments of unhindered acceleration, the Fiesta pulls surprisingly well.

Have to agree, some people gave me a lot of shit for running staggered on the 86, 10.5j rear to fit a wider tire (I'd have gone 10.5j square if the front arches had the space for it), still slides when I need it to but it's much more predictable under acceleration when driving normal-to-spirited, going from the stock 195 or so hp setup to 350-380 doesn't really sound like a massive amount but on those stock prius tires is just not a good fit, had to swap the rears over to the oem wheels with original prius tires not too long ago for a few days and had to constantly pay attention to throttle when cornering to keep the grip.

700hp I wouldn't run anything less than 310 or it'd just be a number to throw out in conversations rather than power to actually put down onto the street, though the hellcat has the added benefit of a higher weight to keep them pressed against the road, that said though 275 is clearly not right for that car.

That is of course, glossing over the whole optimal temperature, tread pattern, average road surface condition, load vs traction, drag coefficient on surface vs weather effects and so forth, because thats a rabbit hole you don't come back from lol

Shouldn't be a problem, just take it slow and go in increments. Lift up one side, set it on the stands at the lowest level. Lift up the other and go a little bit higher, then a little higher on the first side, etc. until you have enough room for the work.

I do it all the time. Just make sure you're using blocks on top of the jack stands and the place you're putting the stand won't put strange forces on the top of the stand as you lift it up (or slide or rotate).

Go slowly, watch your stands, and you'll be fine.

I wouldn't do it unless you have some relatively meaty logs to slide under the car in case a jack fails or topples.

A safer, though more time consuming way would be to take off one wheel and replace with space saver, then take off the wheel you are going to swap it to, swap it over and then swap that newly removed wheel over again with the space saver, do for other alternating pair and you're done, no life threatening Heath Robinson approach needed.

Do you uhh, go under the car?

Don't need to go under the car to rotate the tires, but yes I've worked under the car with the car up on four jack stands. Before doing so I always put tires and blocks under the frame as backup where I can and then rock the car back and forth. What you're checking for is that you can apply high forces (wrenching on bolts or hammering on partS) without moving the car or shaking the jackstands.

TylerD

Member
The most nervous point when I'm working on my car is getting it up on jack stands. Anytime I get all 4 wheels off the ground on stands, I take off all 4 and slide them under the car in between the jack stands on either side and put blocks on top of the wheels. With the electric impact it takes a couple of minutes to get all the wheels off and under the car.

Sometimes, I'll jack up my floor jacks to where they are barely touching front and rear center jack points as well. The front center jack point on the e46 is a joke. You crush the reinforcement plate up into the engine brace so depending on how you get it on that point when you lift it might be a touch higher on one side than the other when you are trying to drop it down on the jack stands.

They work great for this. Note that they only capture 10-30 seconds at a time.

My car has almost half the horsepower of the Hellcat and comes 295 rears. I can still manage to break them loose by flooring it in slow corners.

Driving a Hellcat must be a ridiculously hilarious experience. Lol

Also, sorry I never posted impressions of the Macan Turbo. Been super busy. I'm not nearly eloquent enough like an actual car reviewer to do it justice anyway. All I'll say is it felt like the perfect sporty daily driver. Fast enough to have fun with, but not get you in too much trouble. Handles much lighter and more tightly than any 4,000lb SUV has the right to. Enough space and utility for a small family to boot.

My sister test drove a Macan in SoCal last week and is ordering an S through me.

Compared to the BMW X3, Mercedes GLC, and Audi Q5, I think it's the strongest contender in the segment, and I'm not just saying that because I work for Porsche. Had a chance to drive those as well recently and they don't compare. Even a base Macan for $47,500 offers great material quality and driving pleasure. I can see it being a lot of people's entry into the brand.

Thanks for the update on the Macan and your thoughts on the segment. You folks are probably going to get tired of hearing it but I am absolutely smitten with it after my drive at the PEC. It's hard to describe if you haven't been in one but it has that little bit of ride height advantage that you get from an SUV that gives you excellent road vision but then combines all of these great sports car traits with a great look and a great interior.

Like Evo said its pretty much the perfect sporty daily driver.

I can honestly say that the Porsche Macan generates the most enthusiastic ownership reactions of any car on the market. I considered one but the waiting list and upcharge meant it was out of my reach. And I'd have had to settle for the base model. Which people still seem to love.

There was a brand new Raptor parked at my work today. Looks suuuuper nice - just small refinements across the board over the last model make it look much more slick.

That said - it's HUGE. One of my friends has a 2015 F-350, and the Raptor really didn't look that much smaller.

I've never really cared for black wheels as they can look a bit pretentious, but I think they just look badass on all the new Miatas I've seen.

Should be fun, for my neighbors and me!

I only hope that helmholtz resonator cancels out some drone. Ecoboosts tend to have that, but ETS claims they have it down to a science now dialing it out.

I hope your fix keeps working. I honestly should've taken a chance on the fix. I've heard some people going on for years and tons of miles without problems, but apparently some autoshops in my area told me that no fixes guarantees anything since they've had some break down over time as well, while others go on forever.

Yeah, we'll see. It did cost me over 2 grand, so I'm kinda hoping it works ;).

I haven't received the 718 Cayman yet, it's supposed to come in at the end of the month so I'm definitely looking forward to driving on the countryside roads and hills after I get it. The weather is unfortunate with the rain and everything but it should still be nice.

Ah you went with the Cayman, not the Boxster. Even better. What color?

My Bro had a first gen Raptor with the 6.2l V8, a few weeks later my friend went and ordered one. This was almost 4 years ago now. My brother sold his for a new M4, but my friend kept his and spent 20k on a Supercharger, lol. He wanted a fast 'car', yet he went out and bought 750hp Nissan GT-R

I think the 2nd gen looks that much better than the 1st gen.

This is not a thing that happens. They're big mean trucks made for big mean stuff that unfortunately only ever end up looking big and mean (once or twice a year they may go off road to validate the owner's purchase).

Yes I'm generalizing, but I've never seen a dirty Raptor. Just saying.

They're more of a city show truck TBH. My brother used his a actual work truck, hauling trailers with construction equipment, and carrying a pallet of sand or blocks, bricks or stone.

I like how that Raptor is SO big that it barely fits between the lines of the parking lot. It is a very good looking truck, however.

In terms of the Macan, as we were driving back home from the Porsche Experience Center my wife asked me if the Macan GTS could be my "one" car and I said "it is completely fantastic but I don't think I could give up my Miata or other small, lightweight sports car."

A garage with a Macan and a Miata in it would be most excellent, however and as pricey as the Macan is a good Miata is cheap as chips considering the amount of fun you can get out of one.

So yeah, there's my somewhat realistic dream garage at the moment.

That's cool. I have 2 questions. What does your Hellcat do when it's not intimidating the fuck out of everything? How does that shifter feel in action and touch? It looks like it would be very chunky and solid in a good way.

I anxiously await the glamour shots.

specced an A4 with brown leather and Midnight Blue with walnut trim. But when we sat in it, it felt like an overly stuffed Victorian office. But I still wanted it. In the end, the missus (she doesn't know this) decided by voicing a similar complaint. I still sort of regret black leather, especially since it's actually quite gray.
