MIC: Overwatch players turn to Reddit to share their stories of Harrassment

TRIGGER WARNING for multiple instances of sexist and racist language in the article and the thread on Reddit

MIC said:
In the infamously toxic worlds of online gaming, the simple revelation that an actual, real-life woman is playing can inspire others to berate her with horrifying, sexist comments. Unfortunately, these situations have almost become the norm in online spaces. In fact, a 2014 study published by the Pew Research Center found that 25% of women between ages 18 and 24 had experienced sexual harassment online.

That number won't come as a surprise to anyone who's played an online game — like, ever — but a new thread on the Overwatch Reddit lists in unsettling detail the types of abuse female players endure on a daily basis. As of this writing, the thread's nearly 2,700 comments are filled with players sharing stories of sexual harassment in competitive Overwatch — and it's absolutely gut-wrenching. Here's an overview.

Reddit user neutrondamage started the conversation with a post on /r/Overwatch, inspired by her recent uptick in playing the competitive mode of Overwatch as much as possible before its third season wraps up. As the amount of time she spends in competitive Overwatch increased, so too did the amount of horrible sexism she's experienced — such that she called it "one of the worst" weeks she's had, in terms of harassment.

Here's neutrondamage's quick list of things players have said to her over voice chat in that short time:

• "Can I get some nudes?"

• "Hey, why aren't you in the kitchen making me a sandwich?"

• "Let me lick your gaping donut hole."

• "You're a small tittied bitch."

• "I bet you have a fat cunt."

If you think playing with a male friend might fend off the worst of it, that doesn't seem to work either. Neutrondamage said she often groups up with one of her guy friends; she included some of the (arguably worse) things other players say in that situation. For example:

• "Awe, little girl has to queue with her boyfriend."

• "Can I get a turn at pounding that pussy, my man?"

Neutrondamage posted these comments not only as a way to open the eyes of those in the Overwatch community who don't deal with this kind of harassment on a regular basis but also to field suggestions and stories from other women in the community.

"I try so very, very hard not to respond to people that say this kind of shit, so much that I'll leave voice channel if it gets really bad," she wrote. "I always block and report them after the match, but sometimes I just stop queuing completely because I'm scared that I'll get matched up against them again and I'll have to endure more."

...

Unfortunately, the common sentiment in many of the comments — like this one posted by entertdp and this one posted by Rawflax — is that Blizzard isn't very responsive when it comes to implementing meaningful punishments for players who are reported for this type of behavior.

Certainly, sexual harassment is an issue that pervades our society at every level, but there are tangible things Blizzard could do that might improve the climate a bit. For example, League of Legends sometimes rewards players who haven't been reported for bad behavior with exclusive in-game items. Similarly, Dota 2 follows up with players who have filed reports and lets them know whether the player they reported was actually banned.

A system like this would create a bit more accountability in Overwatch, forcing Blizzard to follow up with players who experienced harassment and let them know what it thought was an appropriate punishment for the behavior they reported.

But, until Blizzard takes more drastic action, these types of stories are likely to continue unabated. Mic has reached out to Blizzard for comment and will update with any response.

REDDIT THREAD

I myself keep voice off but still have experienced the same thing as one of the posters; being called the N-word while playing Lucio in team text chat. It's absolutely fucked that the community fosters people of this caliber.

It's reasons like this that I actually have not played a Multiplayer game with chat or voice chat until just last year (Which ironically was Overwatch).

I have Voice Chat turned off and I block and report anyone who says unacceptable things, directed at me or not. It's a shame I even have to do that, but being someone with bad anxiety when it comes to people in general, someone being a dick can make me never want to touch a game again.

I really wish there was a way to moderate voice chat. I really, really do. I might actually use it if I knew it wasn't a shit show sometimes. I'm not willing to feel uncomfortable when playing something for fun.

Why am I not surprised, hearing all these things being said reminds of the Heroes of the Storm general chat but vocally. Shit, all of this has been going on since the early WC3 days in chat.

I play comp with my gf and she purposely doesn't speak because of issues like this. So when we Join lobby I mainly do all the call outs so we don't have to deal with this type of stuff.

This is unfortunate, but I play Overwatch on PS4 where there is no text chat, and I only voice chat with friends.
So I've had ZERO problems.

How fucked up is it that it's been almost 20 years since counter strike and OG Starcraft started this shit and it's gotten literally no better. If anything it's gotten worse.

Literally the first thing I do when I turn on my PS4 if want to play something online is go into a solo party chat. It's basically an "instant pre-mute everyone" regardless of game. People can complain that party chat killed communication in online console games, but it's the reason why I consider playing console games online now of days to begin with. I only voice chat with people I know in my party chat.

This will never change and shouldn't surprise anyone by now.

Teenagers and college age kids being anonymous on a microphone are pieces of shit and some percentage of them always will be. It doesn't mean we accept it but acting like it's shocking in 2017 is a bit much.

Liberal use of the mute button and reporting tools is the only way to handle it. It will never stop happening.

I swear reporting does nothing heard some vile shit both in chat and voice and the same people just keep on playing.

Feels like these harassment issues will never get better.
I only use voice chat with friends and never with online randos because of shit like this.

Even if I'm not being targeted by this nonsense hearing it saps my will to play. The fact this is the norm for the vast majority of online games is such a shame. No dev seems up to the task of policing people who act in this fashion, and over time more people quit because of them, leaving those who wish to act like assholes to outnumber those who just want to enjoy a game.

And People complained about Splatoon not having voice chat.

Seems like a wise decision not to stop this and force players to adapt

Blizzard's review system seems to be very inadequate because of the heavy emphasis on community moderation.

People have received bans for playing characters in competitive mode. I have been reported for playing Sombra in competitive mode on a few occasions.

Someone screenshot a comment I said about not calling people fags, after I had just been in a game where someone was really hurt by it. This person said they were going to share what the "liberal snowflake" said in some website; guessing it went to reddit or 4chan. In this rare instance, a female also took part in supporting the male.

Gaming brings out so many bad things in people; and people get so stressed. There is constant fighting between people over absolutely nothing, and it's really sad.

For what it's worth, in the many many hours I've played overwatch I haven't heard anyone berate a single woman in my games; and there are lots of women who play overwatch.

If there was any sexual harassment in my games I would instantly report them, but I can say there hasn't been a single instance that I've seen.

At some point, multiplayer games are going to have to learn that report functions helps fuck all at an individual level if there's no actual feedback on action being taken against players.

It might as well be the equivalent of screaming at a jar, even if there's tangible work being done in the background.

I hear this shit all the time in Overwatch. It's absolutely disgusting. What's sad is that it's a rather fun/innocent game that should foster a good community, but its popularity makes this impossible.

I make sure to report this stuff whenever I hear it but I don't know if that actually does anything.

Then we get people making threads wondering why there seems to be less people willing to voice chat with randoms. This is the reason why.

Literally came here to post this.

The problem is and always will be that people like act differently when it comes to online because there is the element of acting tough behind a screen and also the fact that you're pretty much anonymous.

No idea what the fix is, but what certainly would help is more people speaking about it and contacting developers and publishers, as im sure if they started to get bad press around these things then they would look at it. Also I think people that aren't involved have a part to play. Personally I pretty much always party chat (Xbox One), but if you're in a game and you're hearing this sort of stuff if you aren't backing up the victim then there's something wrong with those people too.

That's horrible. I've been called a "spic" (think it was spelled that way) over voice chat and private message but that was maybe once every few months. Can't imagine having to turn off voice chat because verbal abuse is so common.

The shit people say online, especially to women, is absolutely disgusting.

I have a feeling that even if they build in a reporting function just for toxic voice chat it would get overwhelmed. As such is the nature of Internet anonymity. Until there is recourse for these actions then this will continue unabated.

Much much earlier... Games have always been a "boys club" and they've (myself included 20 years ago) acted like this.

Yeah, overwatch was the first game I ever stopped playing due to the toxic community. What I experienced was even worse than the first and only 2 games of LoL I played last year. One that sticks out is that someone called me a fag, bitch etc. and then told me to go kill myself because his SR score was higher than mine. No provocation or anything, just upset that I was there. When I got MVP, there was no apology, no acknowledgement, they just dropped out of the game the second it ended.

There are good communities though. I can find fairly good PVP experiences with some fighting games, dark souls PVP, racing games etc. People who don't feel the need to swear at others or abuse them, who know that their small or niche online player base needs to stick together and act in a way that will ensure players continue with the game's online components.

Hell, I've had much better experiences with Battlefield and Halo than Overwatch, and that's fucking saying something. Doesn't help that many of the toxic MOBA players jumped into Overwatch.

I thought blizzard was strict on this shit.

Oh well nothing of value has been lost for me.

People acting like shitboxes in other games is not a valid reason to claim a multiplayer team based game lacking voice communication is ok.

And then we see threads on neogaf asking why online voice chat on consoles is dead, there are a lot of gamer who are racists, sexists and trash human beings.

Can someone please explain why this game seems to be a constant source of drama?!

Tens of millions of players, a decent chunk of which came from other toxic competitive communities like MOBAs and FPSs, basically assured that no matter how they act, their online community will persist...

Maybe someone else has a better explanation, but that's my assumption. They feel tough by doing so, and the relatively low chance that being reported will result in punishment makes them feel even more powerful.

Mix all of these aspects with anonymity and you get a good old shitfest.

Well it's blizzards fasting selling game and has a giant player base.

Dunno what the "drama" is. People on the internet continue to act like assholes because they have anonymity, this is a known in literally everything not just overwatch.

Unless you are talking about the salt mines of people complaining about the game have diversity and a gay character then yeah, that can also be attributed to the large player base having people with those views.

It's why you mute everyone in every online game. Voice and text. I thankfully don't have to deal with the worst of the worst, as I'm a guy, but I've heard and read plenty of garbage.

"But no communication, you need teamwork"
Yes I know

"Grow a thicker skin"
This is the dumbest thing ever

"Wait until someone says something before muting everyone"
Screw that

More online games need to be like Destiny
All PvP matches start with everyone outside of the party, a simple press of the d pad will opt you in
You're not forced to listen to squeakers, harassers, music that sounds like shit through the speakers etc etc.

Amazingly due to this feature, you hardly ever see anyone enter the voice chat, they are too lazy to even do that.

Was there a downside to this for Bungie? Sure, people were mad they couldn't shit talk other players, I mean "communicate with team mates"

I played Halo enough back in the day, I've been called every ethnic slur and my mother apparently had relations with half the Xbox community during Halo 2's run.

Voice chat is horrendous, it really does make you wonder
Where are there parents? Where are their girlfriends and where are their wives when they speak like this to people?

Solo party/instant mute is the best solution imo.

Gotta love the overwatch community sometimes...

Someone sent me this message after we lost a game

"You fucking suck, I want you to litterally take the controller and choke yourself with it like the cock you had last night, that way it gets better use then your shitty hands"

I was like damn bro I'm Reinhard and I got 3 gold medals but it's cool

Edit: to go along with the topic tho I feel really bad for online girls. It shouldn't be this way and I couldn't imagine not being able to communicate online with your teammates becuase a couple of horny teens thing it's funny to just keep harassing you. To all my female overwatch players you can join me on Xbox if you want a civil game :) unless you suck ;)

I've seen my share of disgusting comments and blatant misogyny directed at the lady member in our group before. Almost makes me want to stop playing the game sometimes. :/

It's really not that big a deal. Mute and move on, enjoy the game.

If you're stopping playing the game because of this you let them win. "I'm muting you" and click is all you need to say.

These trolls want attention..That's all.

I bought OW for my GF when it came out and thus, we play together on her account. It has a feminine sounding name. I can confirm for a fact that people are jerks the moment they see it (despite the fact that she's in the 2500+ range for Comp). It's only when I hop onto voice that they back off.

Really sad to see that this type of behavior persists.

I'm used to it by now. It doesn't deter me from using voice chat in highly competitive games like Overwatch. I'm more offended by people that don't know how to shut up.

Could it be because of american servers?

I play Overwatch mainly on european servers and while you sometimes hear bad stuff, its maybe in 1 game out of 20. Otherwise its more like
"Report that noob Genji - he cant play."
"What a noob. Fuck you."
"Not another Hanzo. Change!"

Said it before, will say it again: The status quo is not good enough when it comes to online gaming. For all the interacting Blizzard does with the Overwatch community, it's disappointing that they're not more proactive about this issue.

fuck man. I've never cried from being insulted while playing a game. That would seriously make me reconsider even fucking playing the game. Like, subjecting myself to a high probability of being bullied or insulted when trying to enjoy a piece of entertainment I paid money for. Like, fuck paying for abuse.

I also hate how most games make it obtuse and cumbersome to mute someone - they always get in a few words before you can pin down the blinking mic and shut it off. Shit should have progressed in the 15ish years since voice chat in console gaming has become pretty standard, but it is one of the most archaic UIs in modern games.

The bigger the playerbase the more douchebags there are I find. Small niche games are much better in that aspect. Red Orchestra 2, Squad, Project Reality, etc.

I've not run into this but then again I do tend to ignore voice if I'm not with a group I made.. Plus my CS 1.4 - 1.6 years prepared me for voice chat in future online map games.

I feel worse for the girls.. This is why my son won't be online or with voice enabled until teenage years. He doesn't need to hear useless chatter.

Do not doubt a WORD of this. The ladies in my MMO guilds usually were really recalcitrant to speak on TS/Ventrillo/Mumble (even an officer!). Too many attacks, or even just lame come-ons. One termed it as "I don't always wanna be ready to get into 'Queen Bitch' mode all the time".
