KS8000 settings for gaming at 4k/HDR

Have any of you guys managed to figure out the weird issue with PS4 Pro playback that causes color channels to become distorted for a split second?

I really wish I knew how to explain it more. It's like each color is it's own layer, and then they're separated for a second. Reds are moved to the left by like a quarter inch, blues to the right, greens stay in the middle...it's weird.

Heel - I think that's his name - started a thread on the Samsung forum about this problem. It happened to me on my standard PS4. I'm able to force it to happen between swapping in and out of HDR modes, but apart from that I've not seen it after using a better quality HDMI cable. But this might be coincidence.

Might be good if you posted your experience here:

Have enough money for ks8500, get it or the ks9000 for $800 more? Or no point and save the money to put into sound system?

Interested in this answer as well. I can get a certified used KS9000 for $1275 or an unopened regular one for $1500.

The tv can send Dolby and DTS surround sound fine through HDMI ARC without loss of quality. I was forced to do it as my receiver isn't 4k compatible. Just need to make sure the settings on whatever is going into the tv tie in with the expert audio settings on the tv. e.g. Set the ps4 to bitstream Dolby, then set the tv to bitstream dolby in the audio>expert settings.

Hmm.

The problem I have with that is when I watch a blu ray and it uses a DTS track. I have to go into PS4 and change the bitstream menu otherwise it just shows up at 2.1 on this TV.

So I wonder if I can keep my consoles running through the receiver, but still hook up ARC and ditch the optical cable for when I use the TV apps?

I chose the KS9000 over the 8000 because I like the style better and was worried about several reports the KS8000 had about back panel separation. Moreover, I wanted the top of the line edge lit model and via the Samsung EPP program I was able to get a marginally better model for the same price I had budget for the KS8000.

Having said all that if I were you I'd get the KS8000 and invest in a sound system. I've read that they're basically the same televisions with the KS9000 being able to output a higher peak brightness but that's about it.

I run everything through the receiver and use optical for the TV apps, just like you. If you run everything through the TV you will lose 7.1 uncompressed sound support, as well as support for DTS-MA, Dolby Atmos, and other advanced codecs because ARC/optical doesn't support them.

For your TV apps, you can try ARC but I've never had anything but annoyance with it to the point where I just cut it off and went back to optical. The problem is that the ARC signal causes my receiver to switch to the TV-Out input when I don't want it to, like cutting on the TV, for example. Then sometimes the TV will default back to internal speakers if you don't let it have it's way with the receiver. I'm not sure if it will correct your glitches, but you won't gain any extra audio fidelity over the optical connection. Since optical works fine for me there is no benefit since the automatic switching features only annoyed me. I think ARC is designed primarily for those who are running all devices to the TV first and then out to a receiver or soundbar.

Yeah I get that. I definitely won't move my consoles and stuff back to the TV inputs at this point.

But my optical issues are really annoying. Like I can hear glitching and like digital scramble noises, especially when using the amazon prime video app. Sometimes audio just drops for a second too.

So is color banding on PS4 Pro normal? Its really bad in games ive tried like RE7, The Last of Us, and its on the ps4 home menu too :/ I can't for the life of me figure out how to get it to go away, tried changing the ps4 and tv settings from automatic to YUV420/limited and that didn't fix it either... its not a defect or anything right? lol I dont know much about TVs I just want to make sure its not the TV's fault because other than the color banding it's perfect (i have the 49 inch)

If anyone had problems with color banding and found a way to fix it, would you mind sharing your settings? Would be much appreciated :)
I think it just depends on the source, and if you see banding/gradient issues, then it's just your TV displaying content as it is. The only way to remedy this is if your TV has a post process option to smooth them out, something which I don't think the Samsungs have

For me, I've only noticed banding in menus (PS4 menu, game menu, Amazon Prime menu)

I've also only noticed it in some menus, but just presumed it's the background image and not the tv, definitely not had it in game.

If you have limited colour range set, remember you need to set the hdmi black level to low on the tv menu. I have mine set to full range and normal HDMI black level. Check your brightness and gamma isn't set too high also. 2160 rgb is better to have than yuv420 (Doesn't make a difference in RE7 as that's hdr anyway).

Thanks for the tips guys, I think I might've just had the brightness set wrong in RE7, The Last of Us is looking fine right now with no color banding during gameplay :) I just have everything set to Auto right now and it seems to be working fine, I'll mess around with it if I run into any more problems in other games

Got my PS4 pro hooked up to my KS7000 here in the UK. It’s plugged directly into port 2 of the Samsung one connect box. Everything appears to be working fine – 4k and HDR for games, but every now and again I seem to get this white / grey flash as the signal and sound drops. Each time it happens, it’s a single flicker. The TV seems to work fine for a few days, but the issue crops up now and again and can happen 3 – 4 times per hour.

I purchased a new 2.0 HDMI lead and everything appeared to be fine until the issue resurfaced last weekend. I’ve switched ports on the one connect box, but with no success.

This only happens with the PS4 pro. My Xbox one, Wii U and TV inputs are fine. Streaming 4k content via the TV apps (Amazon and Netflix) is flawless. PS4 firmware is up to date, screen settings are set to automatic and the TV firmware is up to date.

My friend is going to let me borrow his PS4 pro over the weekend so I can test that out.
Just need to figure out who I need to contact with regard to resolving this issue, Sony or Samsung?

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

I was told today that samsungs new year models are coming in so thats why they are getting discounted here. Will hold off for a bit to see what rtings thinks of the new Q series or just see the difference myself when they arrive in shop.

If they do well on rtings I might jump upto a Q8.

Anyone in Canada able to buy 4k content on the Google play app? No option for 4k purchases appear to be available on the tv app right now.

How reliable would, say, a refurb from Walmart be? At $839, that's almost in my price range.

Was it a display unit? Avoid these at any cost, you never know how many hundreds of hours these were running at a store.

Is Watch Dogs 2 on PS4 Pro HDR? I played it yesterday and was blown away by the 4K image quality. I'd just like to know whether it was HDR as well :)

Depends why it was refurbed I think. If it's a severe probably it's usually not worth them refurbishing as it costs too much so you're probably okay. May just have been a cosmetic issue originally anyway. If it was refurbed with anything to do with the screen/panel I'd probably avoid. Check what sort of warranty you get on it as it usually voids the Samsung warranty. I have a 49" KS9000 (euro version of the US KS9500 I think), which was just return for a minor scratch on the back of the TV, so I'm delighted with it for £800 compared to £1500 new, nervous that it only has a 12 month warranty, but the chance of anything going wrong is minimal.

Happens to me too with the pro. No idea what it is. Set video to yuv instead of auto and it'll fix it until they (hopefully) patch it.

Alright, thanks for the help guys. Picking up a 65 inch KS8000 in a few hours. So, besides the stuff in the OP is there anything else I need to be heads up about? Make sure all HDMI ports have HDMI UHD enabled, check the brightness in game mode, anything else?

Set your inputs correctly. Some may set correctly automatically, but it's good to check. Make sure Game Mode is on for the appropriate inputs.

Did they fix the bug the OP mentions about having to up your brightness to 20 for HDR to work properly?

1) Who says it is a bug?

2) No, in game mode only 1 configuration can be saved (instead of 1 hdr/1 non hdr) so you still manually have to adjust the backlight (not brightness).

Hdr for gaming!
This is bugged, you will have to manually up the backlight to 20 for hdr game content in gaming mode and back to 5-10 when you are done. Hopefully we get a fix soon
Set dynamic contrast to off. This can vary by preference. Off gives best range and detail.
Smart led is reccomended to be on high for hdr.

2) My bad saying brightness instead of backlight. Kind of sucks having to change that every time you want to play w/ HDR enabled.

People are browsing Neogaf through their KS8000 web browser? Sounds cumbersome. Also does clicking YouTube links from that browser bring up the YouTube app?

The point being that posting the link is largely useless if you have to go turn on your tv, bring up the app, then go to the HDR channel and/or search for the video anyway.

I'd be willing to bet anyone that would click your link are browsing via PC or their phone.

Also...I expect those that have this TV (including me) have already added/subscribed to that channel by now.

c'mon man, it's just a heads up. and you know you can just press "watch on tv" from the video options, mobile or desktop, right?

Tonight... I will become one of you. One of you.

Went with the 9000 as it was the same price as the 8000 where I picked it up. Ooooh, so very excited.

HDR gaming question: Does anyone know if it is possible that at some point the PS4 pro console will display in hdr at all times, e.g. home screen/non hdr games, by just translating and properly displaying SDR content? Or is there a technical reason why hdr mode can't display sdr signal?

I just loathe the 7 or so remote commands every time I play an hdr game and this solution would seem to negate that and make me feel better about my purchase of my 55ks8000.

7 or so remote presses?
HDR should just come on when it needs it...

when it doesnt need it, thigns will just display as normal. no need to touch any settings.

When you play hdr games the picture settings must be adjusted, such as brightness to 20 and led control and sometimes color space. The problem is that the gaming mode doesn't store a second profile for these settings when an hdr signal is sent.

So I would like to know if there is a technical limitation concerning whether the PS4 could be updated to always send an hdr signal and translate sdr content appropriately so that we don't have to go through the rigamarole.

I think he's referring to Game Mode not saving an additional preset for HDR content. There is one workaround on the TV side: Use PC Mode. That allows two presets, but increases input lag slightly to 37ms. But it's one way to fix this issue.

Got a 49" KU7000 on sale (can't budget in a KS for now)..

I got 2 questions.

1. What's the view on the HDR+ mode? Is it as useless as I've come to understand it is?

2. I don't have a HTS. Should I care about ARC anyway? I'm not sure what it does.

1) HDR+ is largely useless and does not give an accurate picture. It's akin to people who like to boost the color/contrast/sharpness because they think it looks good. Obviously taste is subjective but I don't see many being a fan (including myself)

2) ARC (audio return channel) is only important if you want to run audio to a soundbar or receiver via HDMI separately from the HDMI connection to your TV. It is limited to 2 channel PCM or 5.1 Dolby Digital/DTS (same limitation as optical).

By the way, I'm blown away by this TV.. Can't imagine how great those better sets must make things look.

There are several people in the other KS8000 thread saying HDR switching works fine in Game Mode for them. I just don't know what to believe anymore.
They must have fixed it. Ghost Recon beta is auto-switching. I'll test some others.

Weird, now it's not switching back (Ratchet and Clank) but I did have the menu open when I closed the app, hoping to see it real time.

Maybe that messed it up. Idk. Will tinker with it some more.

Anyone else having problems with subtitles screwing up the contrast by having backlight leakage. I notice it mainly with netflix where the subs are super bright. Backlight set to 20.

Just double checked and this is definitely not the case for myself. My tv is on firmware 1162, what version are you on?

As I understand it even people on 1165 report that it does not auto switch.
