But William looks almost like a carbon copy of Geralt...

Yeah but English dude sent to Dark souls Japan is more interesting then the half wolf? perfect, wizard, sword fighter, who's job is to hunt monsters, etc.

They look the similar but Geralt has the "look at this super strong self insert who has wolf eyes or snake eyes or whatever" stupid mary sue shit.

TLOU ending is shit.

I really don't like the Witcher series because Geralt looks like the stupidest character I've ever seen.

William from Nioh is more interesting to me.

What looks stupid about Geralt to you? Just curious since his design seems pretty straightforward and average to me.

EDIT: Nvm, just saw that you answered this above, lol.

People who complain about grinding can't just admit they can't understand a game's battle system.

My usual complaint is if I cannot level up enough to keep pace with the main story while following the main story, the game did a bad job. I should only have to grind for optional stuffs like new game+ content, super bosses, and post game dungeons.

In 99% of good RPGs, this does not have to be done.

Are people complaining about Persona 4 grinding people who experimented with buffs, debuffs, and fusions? I doubt it!

Final Fantasy XIII trilogy rules.

GTAV is boring.

Arkham Origins is the best Arkham game.

Tomb Raider is better than Uncharted.

And....

Pokemon is overrated.

It's far more controversial to say that you enjoyed those parts.

I did.

Strange. I liked dungeon music, the battle system, and using my characters in battle. I don't like how the battle system basically disappears for a more standard system with bosses, but even there it is not like the fights are bad. I do think the dungeons could do with more than being multistoried mazes with lots of fog, but they were at least thematically charming.

But yeah, I find it weird that P4 is so highly praised here but is not really held up as a good RPG. Yet, I think it is a good RPG.

Yeah, this. If I ever have to stop and get off the main track, then you've done something wrong as a developer.

From what I've seen, yeah this is common. It seems like some people find the idea of ever losing a battle in a jrpg to be an unacceptable waste of time. Personally I find that stepping back and rethinking my strategy or fighting a bit to learn new abilities or find new weapons to be one of the main things that draws me to the genre in the first place. And sometimes backtracking after hitting a brick wall of a boss leads me to things I totally missed my first time around which can be really satisfying. I guess some folks are more concerned with seeing the next cutscene or the instant gratification of clearing a fight vs actually being challenged by a fierce encounter. I know I used the lv down thing in Xenoblade for a few bosses because I wanted to see the story unfold so I'm not immune to this.

I'm sure I'm generalizing but I've seen so many people lose their shit over the slightest amount of backtracking or repetition that it makes me think there should be a "no grind" instant win button in rpgs for those who can't be bothered.

Not really, even most people who love Persona 4 seem to agree that the dungeons and combat leave a lot to be desired.
And this is why I'll never touch those games. They really seem to boil down to dating sim stuff, so I can't comprehend why it's often treated as this amazing, (relatively) modern classic of videogames. I don't feel like even the best dating sim ever would deserve such praise.

Finally! I've always felt like I was the only one on the planet who thought Origins was better than City or Asylum. The boss battles and well thought-out detective scenes really push it ahead of the others to me, especially Knight.

There are many, many people on GAF that believe this, they are all as incorrect as you. Origins is a good game, but it's a buggy mess with broken combat and an empty copy/paste overworld. The story and bosses can't overcome those hurdles.

- Too-frequent balance patches are killing some games - fighting games especially. There needs to be more time for people to truly come to grips with the limits of the engine and each character and for a real clear meta to develop before balance patches happen. Frequent balance patches mean that you have to be CONSTANTLY grinding the game, mmo style, if you want to stay competitive. This is happening to a lesser extent in games like Overwatch too. Force people to learn matchups, counters and the limits of certain characters. Stop catering to the vocal minority who always have the next balance complaint on their mind.

- I don't care what hate people want to pile on smash games, and I haven't played any other game in the series to compare, but Sm4sh is a fun game. However, smash games have no place in finals at evo, and having two smash games in evo finals is utterly ridiculous.

- Souls games are not my bag, but they're not bad games. Their method of storytelling is definitely unique. Uniquely lazy.

- Skullgirls art is atrocious. In particular, whoever designed the UI needs to be kicked in the face.

- Multiple nintendo series (mario, zelda, donkey kong, mario kart) aren't generally very fun or rewarding to play, and some control quite poorly, but they get a pass for using familiar characters, staying family friendly and bright & colourful. They are fantastic for children learning the fundamentals of using a controller, and from there on out it's mostly nostalgia.

A related annoyance of mine: 4x games (Civ, Stellaris, the Endless franchise) can change so much between patches that something you learn in one version is entirely different the next time you play.

I feel every 4x game should go through Early Access so it can be balanced "in the wild", as actual players min-max resources and game the system far better than the developers and QA staff.

The Witness would've been a far better game with less puzzles. It is a striking example of how more content doesn't necessarily make a better game. It's also outdone in every way by The Talos Principle.

People who complain about Valve or Steam fanboys should honestly take a deep look at what Valve has done, not just in game development but in terms of technology generally. I can understand not liking the company, but if you look at what they've done - free online play, auto-updating, Steam Controller, Steam Link, Vive, Streaming, and even things like Machine Learning-based anti-cheat research - and still come to the opinion that people who like Steam are just fanboys, you need to step-away and examine your own biases.

Junior Member here, ready to get mocked ruthlessly for my opinions

- The Evil Within has better gunplay/combat, encounter design, environmental design and variety, and enemy variety than the Last of Us, and is therefore, more fun to play.

- Bioshock Infinite was better than the first Bioshock, solely because it's story does not fall off a cliff for the last third of the game. Overall, I would say both games are overrated and have no place in GOAT lists. They excel in atmosphere, but just are not that fun to play.

- A Link Between Worlds is not good. I think people fawn over it because it gives you the freedom to do the dungeons in whatever order you want. But when the dungeons aren't even good, who cares? I also think it gets a pass because it's a ‘return to form' for 2d Zelda after Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks. But to me it feels cheap and soulless, like the first New Super Mario Bros on the DS. Honestly, I think I might actually prefer Spirit Tracks over A Link Between Worlds. Sure it's over world is trash, but the dungeons & bosses, & puzzles are better. Also I have a soft spot for the music in that game, and ghost Zelda rocks.

- POP 2008 was a good game. I think I may like it better than Sands of Time. It deserved a sequel to work out the combat, and fine tune the platforming.

I've never understood the hate for 2008 POP. It was fun to play, beautiful to look at, and had a surprisingly poignant ending. I think if Ubi had just named it something else it would be more fondly remembered.

Pretty much agree with this. Some of the stuff they did with the flattening-to-wall was cool, but there wasn't much else to the dungeons.

Not a huge fan of the DS Zeldas, but I didn't hate them either and I don't really see aLbW as being in another class from them.

Almost none of the social interaction is romance or dating, though. The social aspect of the game is about developing meaningful relationships with a variety of people over a year. That's why people feel so choked up about leaving on the train at the end; because it feels like you really got to know these people and went on a journey with them.

Additionally, I think once you get past the hurdle of the beginning, the whole Persona fusion/Tarot card gameplay system is one of the most ingenuous I've seen in an RPG. That your social interactions make your personal strength increase through fusing more powerful Persona, and that those Persona in turn assist developing your social interactions - it creates a beautiful virtuous cycle where everything feels meaningful and intertwined.

I think most people's issue with it is the combat. Its essentially a bunch of QTE's which can be frustrating. I understand what they were trying to do but you shouldn't take control out of the player's hand like that imo. That said, I really enjoyed it. Characters were good and it was a beautiful looking game at the time. A sequel would've been nice to improve the combat but then assassin's creed came out and PoP just kind of disappeared.

The Last of Us is average at best. The gameplay feels like a walking and gathering sim with generic stealth based action. Puzzles equate to standing up a fallen ladder...just bloat. If you were to think of it as a movie and edit out any unnecessary gameplay sections you'd barely have a game. And Ellie is fucking annoying. Shut up already. She needs to make a comment at everything. Whoever is the voice director should really learn how to utilize dialogue during gameplay. Instead of thinking you're making the characters more alive you make the player really believe they're artificial because some genius writer needs to flood them with on the nose lines.

My standards are very high.

I don't think my position is unreasonable, lol. From everything I've read about this game, and that includes what its fans say about it, it's not something I'd enjoy. Giving this game a chance would require spending time and money on something I likely won't like. And yet, I can wonder why it's so highly praised. I'm not bashing it after all.

The Kingdom Hearts series is the most egregious example of "Oh, I have a bunch of beloved licenced characters? Fuck that, I want to focus on my own shitty creations instead" since EAs Marvel Nemesis: Rise Of The Imperfects

Totally. I love MGS4 and all its over the top cutscenes. I love everything about it that makes people dislike it (except the second half of the ending, that was pretty weak). I just realized I kind of love cutscenes in general if I'm liking a game's story. I don't think I've ever thought any game had too many - as long as they're good, keep them coming!

Another one - I love Nintendo's games, but I absolutely hate their need to "innovate" control. The Wii U is my favorite Nintendo system since the SNES, in a large part because, for once, the control is usually just dual analog plus a normal d-pad, and normally positioned buttons.

Omg We do exist !

TLOU ending legit makes the game. The ending is what makes it remarkable!

Also to add something else to the thread.

Achievements are the worst thing added to "gaming" in a long time. Fuck Achievements. Seriously.

but

Ken Pender's Sonic the Hedgehog comic is this in spades.

People hate on POP 2008? It has its fair share of problems, but it's at the very least a solid game.

And to validate this bump I'll reiterate something I said in the thread once and was reminded of because of a recent thread: Bought exclusivity and timed exclusivity are garbage practices that should be done away with. Budget and control schemes are the only reasons for exclusivity with merit.

Not really controversial but..

Konami are idiots. If they want to bring any fire back to the Silent Hill franchise since they shit the bed so badly with the later entries and with Kojima and Del Toro, all they would have to be is a ground up remake of Silent Hill 2 and not change a damn thing about the plot.

Add VR support.

Boom. They cheesed a way to bring life back to the franchise.

I thought POP 2008 was/is universally liked too.

It not being the worst thing that ever happened and it not being a franchise killer is a modern retcon, as people have actually played it now instead of recycling opinions into the internet echo chamber.

Crappy cel shaded graphics / automatic platforming / can't die / made for babbies / dlc ending were all routinely thrown at it by people who'd never played it.

Dark Souls 1 is my favourite game of all time but, holy hell, the deified status that Souls and Bloodborne have reached on this forum is fucking unbearable.

At least once a week, we get a thread named something completely uninventive like "Bloodborne/Souls is the fucking best" with absolutely no intention of any meaningful discussion but circlejerking. Unsurprisingly, followed by about 3 pages of...

"Wow, I like this game too!"
"Best game of the generation!"
"Des < DS > DS2 > BB <><>< DS3"

Before the thread fizzles out after 3 pages before the next thread in a week or two. Does this forum not get sick of just constantly praising this game with the same comments over and over again?

We get it! This forum loves the Souls games, I love the Souls games! We don't need reminding every single week (Not to mention the threads that get derailed by Souls fans as well). What's worse is, when a user earlier this week tried to make a similar thread about Ubisoft games, a mod changed the title and derailed it into making fun of Ubi games and the OP. If that sort of thing happened with a BB/Souls thread, people would cry bloody murder.

Pokemon games are boring and have not evolved as much as they could have in nearly 20 years. The developers are lazy and too insistent on sticking with what is "tried and true" because everyone eats up each new release.

Hmmm...The worst facet of this is the assumption to revive series perceived to be flagging or absent is to make them into a Souls game or a Platinum character action game.

"Souls is what modern Zelda/Metroid should be!" "New Metroid should focus on Samus's agility and acrobatic skills in combat!"

For some people there really seems to be no room for games that are not primarily action/combat focused and the general circlejerk surrounding these series provides a space where this notion seems like an incontestable mandate that this is what should happen to these series and the discussion is completely oblivious to what makes these games special to their fans and how that is and is not different from what is happening in Souls games or Platinum games.

It's like...let games and genres have their space.

Breath of the Wild will be praised for "innovations" that have already been seen in other open world games and forgiven for things other open world games have been savaged for.
