Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

If you're talking only about the bolded point, yeah, I can see where you're coming from. From a general "we should allow as many people as possible to play our games casually, so having accessibility options is good" I would argue you're wrong, but for pure competitive play, sure.

By competitive, i mean 'not co-op or singleplayer'. I mean standard VS multiplayer online, not actually competitive pro play like I think you think I mean.

When 90% of FPS gaming these days is online multiplayer 'competitive' with people vying for win ratios, kill death ratios, and fun generally depends on how well you are doing relatively. It's not fun to play against people with those adaptors. It feels like playing against people with aimbots, it's a singificant advantage, not in the realm of pro controllers.

How about using a controller on PC? For a game like For Honor in example controller is seen to be the much better option. I guess that goes for any fighting game.

Or using somekind of Elite controller on a console, seems like these get advantage atleast in For Honor for having an option to rebind buttons.

Controller on PC - fine by me. Elite controller on console, fine.

Mouse on console for playing FPS multiplayer (non-coop), not fine.

Ah, then you're wrong-headed of the planet wrongness. :p

Essentially, what you're saying is that someone without full-use of their fingers/wrists/hands - someone who requires a special product to play on console - cannot play, for example, any CoD multiplayer. Overwatch. Destiny multiplayer.

You're prioritising the privileged able-bodied who get invested in the game over those who just want to play and have fun, ignoring whatever physical issues they may have. Be it Iraq War vets, someone born with a degenerative disease, or someone who has just lost a couple of fingers in an industrial accident.

I can't get behind that, and I'm proud of any company that stands-up against that. *shrugs*

Edit: Though that will be why the thread name has "Controversial" in it. :)

There's an old adage about "if you can't beat them, join them" that has been further distilled in the gaming vernacular to two words: "Git Gud".

It applies to any and all complaints about people using a better input mechanism than you and you not wanting to change so demanding its removed from others to be more convenient for you.

-The 3 best Zelda games are Wind Waker, Majora's Mask and Link's Awakening.

-FFIV is better than FFVI.

-Mario64 is overrated.

-DA:I is an excellent game... It just should not have been a mainline DA game.

-Sonic games are mindless, unpalatable shite. Amazing soundtracks though.

Come at me, bros.

Call me crazy but I don't like Seiken Densetsu 3. I waited for ages to be able to finally play it in a language I can understand and when I got my hands on this pearl... meh.

I know I'm some sort of a weirdo (I also don't like Pulp Fiction at all) but this game doesn't do a single thing to keep me attracted.

It has magnificent visuals, lovely detailed sprites, superb magic effects... but for me : that's it.

The game put the SNES on it's knees just to open the main menu and navigate inside it where the ring menus of SoM and SoE were fast and easy to use. I hear you say "hey, dumbass ! The ring menu is still in SD3 !". Yes, it is. Just for a limited number of objects and magic. You're also limited to one weapon type by character and can't change it. Duran with Swords, Kevin with Twin Daggers etc. Weapons like magic, doesn't level up, you have to buy the (extremely rare) new weapons.

And to talk about Magic, oh boy. I know the magic system in SoM was very easy to exploit to spam ennemis and was also a purge to upgrade, but still there was some variety and a nice number of spells. In SD3 ? It depends of your class and your stats. And that's it. You'll learn a single spell once in a while when you level up, and if the stars are aligned with your stats. And the class you choosed. Plus, the healing spells are complete jokes, especially when a boss can spam magic (btw : when you cast magic, the game goes to a complete halt until the spell animation is done) and completely destroy your team and the healing spell can only heal you 1/10 of what you actually need to heal.

Finally, about menus and user interface : in Secret of Mana, when you're in a weapon / armor shop, you can see all three characters head show up in the ring menu to show witch characters can or cannot equip items. In SD3, you have to access the vendor menu with each characters separatly. I can't understand this when the previous game did the right thing and almost every 16-bit JRPG before it.

These little things end up killing every pleasure I can have with it (I also find the soundtrack pretty weak after SoM and Secret of Evermore).

Uncharted 3 is a mediocre game. Like, nowhere near good.

The combat sucks, there are really few good setpieces (most outright suck), the story is a mess. Easily the worst in the series and not in the same league as the rest of the games (which range from pretty good to spectacular)

I like Randy Pitchford and Gearbox.

Having gone to PAX for the last 5 years, I always make it to the Gearbox panel. There is a cool relationship with The Gearbox crew and their fans. Randy loves to entertain at these panels and you will see him walking the PAX floor when not at the Gearbox panel. They seem to go out of their way to give games/DLC/other stuff away to the whole crowd at these events as well. Overall my experience has been that he is accessible and fairly generous to gamers and fans at these events.

I think Smash Bros. for Wii U is the best Smash, and I like Brawl more than Melee. Bigger rosters and Subspace Emissary both appeal to me greatlt.

Generation 1 of Pokemon (strictly counting RBGY as Gen 1, and FRLG as Gen 3) is easily the worst Pokemon generation. It hasn't aged as well as later games.

Super Mario Bros (original BES game) isn't that fun, especially when compared to SMB3 or SMW.

Goldeneye has aged poorly and I can't get myself to like it.

Devil May Cry has also aged poorly, especially when compared to Bayonetta.

Even games you don't care for are still games. Why get up in arms about it? If you look back at history of games, we've always had broad variety of genres that are nothing alike. Even text adventures are games. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colossal_Cave_Adventure Don't be such a casual and dismiss gaming history.

Did I say they're not games because I don't like them? No. I'm simply pointing out the obvious that a virtual environment is different than a game.

No you don't need to say it, you are "attacking" those games because you don't like them. And you try to delegitimize them to validate your opinion. Or am I mistaken and you do enjoy playing those? Or whatever word you think is approriate to use, experience them? I'm actually curious where is the line between game and just a virtual environment to you. I guess Dear Esther doesn't qualify as a game atleast? How about Gone Home? Or if we go little more "gamey", Firewatch? How about all this new VR stuff that are sold as games? Farming or Surgeon Simulator? Would appreciate in-depth reasonings. So you can correct my first impression.

Edit: And also why do people care if walking simulators are classified as games, what harm does it do?

Also the Souls series is trash, and wouldn't be nearly as popular if it didn't become shorthand for instant GAMER CRED. "It's really hard" does not make a game automatically good.

what about the actual gameplay? the world design? the music? i dont think anyone cites the difficulty and lack of hand holding as the sole reason the series is good.

the bold statement makes no sense to me. Not a single fan of the series thinks that the main point is the difficulty (it's not even difficult, Cave Story on hard is difficult).

Why are you trying to mindread me? Why not just respond to my point if you disagree? How does a virtual environment constitute a game? I'm not trying to delegitimize them as their own thing with value, I'm just saying they're not valuable as games.
Here's the definition of game I use, from Chris Wagar:
A system of rules that players agree to be bound by that players seek to produce favorable results from, against the inconsistent nature of outcomes in that system.

Some walking sims do have some gamey elements or puzzle elements. That makes them really bad/simple games. However strict walking sims are not games.

It honestly doesn't take much to be better than Inquisition.

I was going to ask why you like DA2, but then I saw you like MSG4 and Zelda 2. Weirdo!

I love the characters and story of DA2. The Combat was fun, and I like a lot of the tweaks to it from DA:O. I Absolutely adore Hawke and the Gang, as well as the little time skips. I wish more games had time skips to at least give it the feel of taking place over more than a day.

LIke I said DA2 reused a lot of bland boring textures in the cities, and recycled dungeons constantly. That was really the only aspects I did not like about the game.

Zelda 2 is great tho wtf! =p

MGS4.. I love cut scenes and the constant switching between having control/viewing a cutscene. Kept me totally invested in what I was playing. If the storyline itself didn't get quite so wonkey I might rate it a better game than MGS3, even if I enjoyed it more.

-TP has the worst dungeons in Zelda, the one really amazing dungeon being Arbiter's Grounds. The rest are either inconsistent thematically, incredibly linear, dull or uninspired visually, or all of these. Its greatest strength is its vast, epic overworld and beautiful, open environments. Conversely, WW has some of the best dungeons, the worst being Tower of the Gods (after the intolerable Forsaken Fortress) which is incredibly boring. Wind Temple, Forbidden Woods, Earth Temple, and Dragon Roost Cavern are all beautifully immersive dungeons visually and demonstrate a better understanding of space, with huge cavernous rooms that incorporate plenty of vertical layering and puzzles that influence multiple rooms. While its worst aspect to me was its overworld, with sluggish sailing mechanics that made traveling through the endless, flat ocean a real chore.

-The RE series has great controls: methodical, purposeful, deliberate, and strategic.

-The worst aspects of the Zelda series are its story and characters, being generic/flat, overly predictable, or both.

-Super Mario 64 and SM Galaxy 2 are both vastly inferior, at least from a pure platforming standpoint, to 3D World, as the latter's controls are more fluid and feature mid-air turning. Champion's Road would be impossible with the controls of 64 or Galaxy 2. 64's controls in particular are horribly stiff and weighty, jumping feels like you're a slab of concrete that's been thrown in the air.

-Most open world games are quantity>quality, and it looks like BotW will be turning out this way too, with less emphasis on dungeons, and only 4 of those, 120 individually simplistic shrines, and no news so far of any missions or quests with real substance.

Uncharted 4 OST is the best in the series. It's the best produced, it has the widest range of timbre, mood and emotion and I feel people instantly knock it off 'cause of muh Drake's Theme.

Have to agree with this, Henry Jackman's score blew me away.

Drake's Theme was getting old after 4 title screens and no major changes.

So many posts in here that I strongly disagree with, although I guess that is the point of a controversial opinion thread.

My "controversial" opinion is that Bioshock Infinite is one of the worst games I played from the PS3/360 generation. The setting is nice but the story isn't great, and the gameplay ranges from boring to outright terrible (the Lady Comstock fight will forever haunt me). Not to take away from anyone who loved Infinite, but I thought it was a bad game.

I think the reason the story stumbles is, that due to the past you anticipate a twist ahead, and can figure it out long before it actually happens.
The Booker/Comstock link
was very predictable. I liked, and was surprised by, the ending with
the lighthouses and drowning
though.

Are you seriously using examples from Chris Wagar? The simply fact is anything can be a game. Some walking sims might be bad games but they are no less games than Super Mario Bros for example. They have their own set of rules and objectives for the player to interact with or complete. Unless of course your point is that Gameplay is the most important factor and everything else should be a secondary concern to the developers. That i can agree with but that is "Gameplay" a smaller part of a game as a whole. As far as i see it a game can be anything a developer want it to be even if it prioritizes story or immersion or whatever over Gameplay. You might disagree but Chris Wagar seems to have very narrow minded view of what games are. Super Smash Bros 4 can be easily be justified as being a better game than Melee despite it having admittedly shallower Gameplay mechanics. It pretty clear that it completely destroys Melee in terms of modes and characters and that is enough for some people to call it a better game.

Is it controversial to say they the dungeons and combat of Persona 4 are one of the most boring experiences one can have playing video games?

Not really, even most people who love Persona 4 seem to agree that the dungeons and combat leave a lot to be desired.

Metroid Prime 1 was a great drawing board for the next two games but mediocre game by itself.

First off, It has the most generic level themes likes its a freaking mario game: lava, ice, desert, cave world. Sanctuary Fortress, Elysium, thats how you make an intriguing alien world.

The boss designs are platitudinous: Giant Rock monster , Bigger version of small space pirates, Big Venus fly trap monster. None of them were memorable or felt fun to fight against. The bosses in Prime 2 and 3 were not only superior in design but the overall battles were more enjoyable, everyone remembers Quadraxis, the Free Falling Ridley battle, Rundas or Dark Samus battles. The fetch quest was a drag, felt like needless padding to a game that was already dragging on for too long, even the suit upgrades were plain AF, might as well be paintjobs unlike the awesome Dark, Light, PED suits that actually felt and looked like upgrades.

Next up: Why Red Alert 2 is not much better than RA3 or RA1

Sonic 1/2/3 suck, their awful games. Boring, poor controls, schizophrenic level design.
Their awful. I have no idea why people have latched onto them so hard to keep Sonic going for decades. Play Ristar if you're looking for a great Sega created Genesis platformer.

Super Mario 3D Land is mediocre. Probably one of the worst Mario titles Nintendo has ever created.

Sonic & Mario at the Olympic Games series is amazing. At their worst their good games, at their best their game of the year type. Amazingly fun.
They seem to get treated like their shovelware by the majority though.

Shadow of Mordor is one of the best games made in recent years, and it needs to get way more attention.
Story sucked, but the gameplay was incredible and allowed so many different ways to play. Nemesis system was a blast too.

Space Rangers 2 is one of the best games ever made. Seems to have such a small niche following. I bet most people reading this has never even heard of it.

MC Kids is the best platformer on the NES. Largely unknown these days.

Mass Effect got steadily worse as the series went on, 1>2>3. I pretty much expect Andromeda to be the most generic soulless generic third person shooter ever at this point.

Mobile Suit Gooch

Grundle: The Awakening
As a Black gamer, I never really care about representation/diversity in games. It's cool that we get the occasional black lead or whatever, I get that it's important for others. For me, though, doesn't matter if the gameplay/story isn't interesting. Now with portrayal, I might care.

- Half Life 1 sucks (but Half Life 2 is amazing)

- Bioshock 1 sucks

- Call of Duty is a casual franchise, like Wii Sports for example, but merely has mature aesthetics (violence, swearing)

- Uncharted is super overrated

- Talking about games on the internet, following the major gaming companies' trajectories, and watching meltdowns during conferences/megaton announcements is more entertaining then actually playing games. (other then maybe like the best 10-15 games I've played)

This isn't a controversial opinion, it's a borderline fact. You simply can't make a game that appeals exclusively to hardcore gamers and do the numbers that CoD does. Of course it's made for casuals in mind, but that's not inherently a bad thing.

The Last of Us is a good 8/10 game. The story is strong, but the gameplay mechanics around the infected and "puzzles" are so average that it made me stop playing the game. The most interesting and fun parts were fighting human enemies, while the infected were honestly a waste of resources and forcefully slow down the game. Personally didn't like how it ended, but that is completely subjective. Also couldn't stand Ellie saying "Jesus Joel!" at things she's seen more than a dozen times.

Uncharted 4 was great, until the end when you should have been given a cutscene rather than
playing as the daughter looking through Drake's things at random until you "found" the right trigger for the important cutscene
.

- MGS4 is my favorite game all time.

I rate MGS3 an overall better game. But I have never enjoyed a game as much as I enjoyed MGS4. GIVE ME MORE CUT SCENES PLEASE! A movie that I get to play parts of? YES

Totally. I love MGS4 and all its over the top cutscenes. I love everything about it that makes people dislike it (except the second half of the ending, that was pretty weak). I just realized I kind of love cutscenes in general if I'm liking a game's story. I don't think I've ever thought any game had too many - as long as they're good, keep them coming!

Another one - I love Nintendo's games, but I absolutely hate their need to "innovate" control. The Wii U is my favorite Nintendo system since the SNES, in a large part because, for once, the control is usually just dual analog plus a normal d-pad, and normally positioned buttons.

Along those lines, I don't get the love for the Gamecube controller, at all. I see no advantages to it over the dual shock, and it made some genres damn near unplayable (non-Smash fighting games, ugh). Never understood the appeal.

Not sure how controversial, but I really like games that require time management such as Dead Rising and Pikmin. Playing against a truly ticking clock can be so rewarding.

TLOU ending is shit.

I really don't like the Witcher series because Geralt looks like the stupidest character I've ever seen.

William from Nioh is more interesting to me.
