The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild **SPOILER FREE** Impression Thread

THIS IS THE GREATEST GAME EVER MADE

On a more serious note, I've been playing this for a few hours and my eyes seem to have gotten used to the performance drops. I don't even notice them anymore when roaming the overworld. Haven't experienced any hiccups in the early dungeons either.

No, we're under the assumption that gaffers who are directly commentating on the game as they play it bought it through the broken street date. An honor code.

All other info is coming from streams and honestly we can't stop that.

Ah ok . Thought everyone was playing the leaked version. My bad

Important question: can you switch the spoken language to japanese?

For me this would be the closest thing to playing a Ghibli anime.

Disappointed to hear about the voice acting. Though it was probably expected unfortunately.

But for those who are playing. Is voice acting the way to go or would you prefer text bubbles?

If there were only text bubbles, you'd never hear the end of it.

I'll record a bit of the next voiced scene the stream comes across to give an example, of course mark a spoiler and won't record the whole scene just an example for demonstration purposes. Will spoiler mark it and make sure to mention no one to mention the contents of the clip.

I don't know what it'll be right now or if it'll be a good or bad example of voice acting, just to show a random non-biased scene by selecting whatever they stumble on next. Think that's fair.

Yes you can, but the text is then only Japanese!!!
Not interchangeable Spoken and/or written Language...
There was already a complete thread about here, somewhere...
I really hope they patch it in!

We've had catapults killing link after being stasis'd, does that count?

*dungeon spoiler warning*, but a sample of the voice acting, this is from the 2nd main location in the game if you're following the story missions, so not too far in: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxQkCAZ37AU

Please don't post what's in the clip in the topic specifically, though opinions on the voicing itself of course is fine, but there's one of the random voiced characters. And trust me, that's not the worst voiced character either.

Personally what I've heard from the voice acting is nothing worse than your standard Bethesda game.

Not great, but far from bad. Nintendo should let NoE head up voice acting from now on.

I just played it for about an hour and a half. It's 2:30am for me so I'm going to be very tired at work tomorrow. But it's totally worth it. The game is fun from the start. I appreciate that the intro doesn't hold you hand too much. It just points you in directions and let's you figure out how to get there.

It was hard to find a stopping point and as I kept telling myself "just a little more"

As for the graphics, you can feel the lower resolution and the slowdown at first if you've seen a lot of Switch footage, but quickly get lost in the game after a few minutes.

The only thing that bothers me is the feeling that this game was built conceptually to have the map on the gamepad screen, and they ripped it out to make the Switch version more attractive.

Other than that, so good!

I don't care, I want to know what's best for the series. Obviously good voice acting is the preferable route. But assuming that we don't have that. Is the current voice acting better than text bubbles or not? I won't click on any links cause that's too spoilers for me :p

Skiesofwonder

Walruses, camels, bears, rabbits, tigers and badgers.
Well just going by the final trailer the samples ranged from bad to decent so I'm not shocked at BOTW having poor voice acting in general.

I'm more curious about the tone of the towns/NPCs/story/end-game impressions. Have those been generally positive?

Ever since I heard the famous cry scene in the last trailer I've been fearing that the english dub would be spotty at best. Although it was just a small scene the cry sounded totally uninspired and much less dramatic that the japanese version (or most of other languages for that matter)

As a spanish speaker I'm torn between the european spanish dub or the latin america dub and from my understanding on how the language sfuff works on the switch, just by changing the language setting on the system the game should autmatically change the dub, right?

Or it depends on which game version do I have?

aaaggghhhh I can't stop thinking about Zelda despite the important applications I have to fill out.

Some of the bigger areas have more to do, like enemy look out towers, a point of interest, wildlife, enemies, etc. But there are definitely patches that are just barren.
I think it will be quite different when you actually play it. It seems barren/boring if you're watching a stream, because you're passively on the lookout for interesting things. If you're actually playing it though it's sometimes nice to just ride around a bit, try to get a feel for the lay of the land and in the meanwhile determine which direction you're going in next.

More importantly if everything was dense with stuff to do, there would be no sense of discovery. Trekking a path through the wilderness should reward you with pockets of interest. This is the problem with some Ubisoft games, there's so much filler trash that it ultimately becomes meaningless. As long as there aren't long stretches of nothingness and you're not rewarded for it by more barrenness, that's totally fine. And it isn't of course, we've seen this.

This thread disappoints me. I expected a lot of comments like "wow, the story is amazing it really has many twists" or "the npcs are really well written" etc etc. (no that is not a spoiler)

Instead people here are discussing the framerate of the Wii U version... sigh.

Just give some actual spoiler free impressions of the stuff in the spoiler thread or from your experience of the game. This thread is useless as it is now.

Sounds good to me, open space isn't inherently a bad thing.

I concur.

Just imagine riding through one of those *barren* open areas, with White Heron flitting into the breeze as you draw near, birds flying from the trees, a random breeze blowing both grass and foliage to-and-fro, while elk and deer bound effortlessly in the deep forest...

...who needs anything else in those areas :)

What is the Gamepad display used for?

Does the use of the Gamepad screen mean the Wii U version could be a better version than the Switch version?

Entitled much? Most people (like me) have just started the game. There's not much we can tell you (yet), but I'll give it a shot.

Wow the story isn't amazing and full of twists. I don't expect it to blow my mind, it's still Zelda.

The npcs are charming and have witty dialog, just like every other Zelda.

And yes, the frame-rate isn't as solid as I'd want it to be, but it doesn't get in the way of my enjoyment.

Am I the only who find the control scheme tedious and Unintuitive?

From the front buttons to weapon/item selection or aiming/cancel aiming.
