The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild **SPOILER FREE** Impression Thread

Yes you can, but the text is then only Japanese!!!
Not interchangeable Spoken and/or written Language...
There was already a complete thread about here, somewhere...
I really hope they patch it in!

Aww, shit!! Once I get to actually play this game this will be solved. I hope. :D

Just a warning for those of you who actually want to go into this game fresh on Friday, don't enter the BotW Preview thread anymore. People are definitely posting some spoilery shit and it's kind of baffling to me how ignorant and inconsiderate some Gaffers are, quite frankly.

This is the only Zelda thread I'm entering until the Review topic on Thursday, so please be considerate of those of us who actually want to go in fresh. The guidelines laid out in the OP really need to be respected by all users here.

Thank you. I almost entered the preview thread :/

Yeah that Famitsu image seems like fan art or something...but then I keep thinking its major spoilers. >_<

Noone look at the Famitsu image just incase, even if its just fan art.

Four more sleeps then I can finally be at peace. I actually am replying ALBW right now even though I JUST replayed it last month since I was replaying all the Zeldas, was done, but wanted to replay another before BOTW and that was the easiest/shortest to replay. Send help. 9999/10 too much hype.

Edit: I also expect major spoilers in the review thread. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Quite frankly I'm hype as fuck for this game, it's what I've been craving from zelda since the series fell flat for me in OoT

A big open world like Zelda 1 where you are left to figure things out

And a good solid challenge like Zelda 2

The series has been stale on the challenge side of things since ALttP to me so it's nice to hear about people getting absolutely wrecked

You know, Ellie, this thread is really the last of us

What is the Gamepad display used for?

Does the use of the Gamepad screen mean the Wii U version could be a better version than the Switch version?

No use for the dual screen, specifically because they don't want one version to be better than the other, I suspect

the story isn't amazing.

That's quite disappointing. I was hoping they were going to add a bit more narrative than usual in this Zelda, it certainly seemed like it in the most recent trailer.

I guess it's difficult to do that in a game with a silent protag.

Edit: Oops sorry. Double post :(

He's early in the game. I have no doubt it gets dramatic and cool later on.

Thank god Link doesn't speak (from what i hear). Some people say the voice acting is bad so at least it won't ruin the main character.

Last thing we need is another Samus or Sonic, only because voice acting needs to be a mandatory thing in all AAA games.

Silent protag has nothing to do with it IMO. Half Life games, Portal 1/2, Super Metroid and Prime, are all great in this aspect.

Yeah, anyone that wanted Link to have a voice is batshit crazy.
Even if it was decent, it would change everything and get picked apart for months.

Then again people call even amazing VA shit so I don't put much stock into it just yet.

But yeah I'm also glad that link doesn't talk. And i hope he never will.

So the JP voices aren't on the disc at all. In the EU there are

German
Spanish
French
Italian
Russian
English

No System level switching will get you the weeb experience.

It's a real shame we cant get the JP voices, I'd hope it could at least be downloadable like with Drakengard 3 or something. I mean it's just an audio swap, the captions can stay the same.

That's true, same with Chrono Trigger.

Well I dunno, I guess not everyone has finished the game fully, so we won't truly know until a few more days have gone.

I think his post was more like a parody of mine.

*dungeon spoiler warning*, but a sample of the voice acting, this is from the 2nd main location in the game if you're following the story missions, so not too far in: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxQkCAZ37AU

Please don't post what's in the clip in the topic specifically, though opinions on the voicing itself of course is fine, but there's one of the random voiced characters. And trust me, that's not the worst voiced character either.

Seems a little stilted but fine. The way people were talking about it I was expecting some kind of disaster.

The VA isn't that bad nor is other M quality levels of bad story telling lol. It's really mixed bag.
Probably.

Question is, is mixed bag/mediocre/not-so-good VA better than no VA at all? Is the purpose of VA just to avoid reading text? Or is it to make the game and it's atmosphere better? Because in most cases i can think of, voice acting had a negative impact in the later part, in games that previously didn't have it.

The only exception being Starfox 64 so far for me, maybe.

If anything this game has even less exposition than previous games :p That's not necessarily a bad thing, but there's only so much you can do with a non/semi-linearish open world game.

That said, I am only 5-6 hours in the game. For all I know the game might open up and be this entirely different thing. That's why I feel hesitant to share any impressions on the story.

OK I'm sorry but I have to ask: Is that Famitsu image from the Preview thread considered a spoiler for the game? Did I just get spoiled? Or is it just promotional art that has nothing to do with the story? I'm not so sure anymore based on some of the comments in here.

I'm not concerned about the world being empty, because I like what I saw from the footage and I don't want a tower every 5 inches. Over 100 shrines, towns, villages, side quests and caves are enough for me.Also I like quit moments in open world games especially at night.

I think it´s safe, someone said that it´s just to celebrate Zelda´s 30th anniversary, as Link didn´t get the MS in Zelda 1.

I don't know what the story in the game is so I could be wrong, but I'm 99% sure it was just cute promotional art.

Thank you.

This obsession with dense environments 100% of the time is something i don't get. A world can't have only that. Empty areas with not much to do there are also a part of it. Makes the world more believable. If every inch of the world had something for you to do, it would feel artificial. As if the world was made for the character to play with.

I know this is minor, but given that this is labelled a super spoiler free thread, heads up that this link does show a scene of characters talking that hasn't been shown officially to my knowledge. Careful if you are very sensitive to seeing anything.

Ouch, sorry, edited now. Thank's

Why are people avoiding story spoilers for Zelda? It's literally the same story every time :p

Maybe the core of the story, yeah. The core being Link has to set out on an adventure to beat the evil antagonist. But everything around that core is unique to the respective game, including plot twists etc.

"We were all having a great day until Ganon ruined everything."

I mean Ganon is the antagonist in most of the games but that doesn't mean the story is the same.

As story is Beginning Middle and End

You change up any of those parts specially the middle and it's a very different story

Hell Zelda 2 doesn't have ganon in it

Im not sure if this has been asked before. I know there is not dual screen function, but when you play it offtv, can you manage all the menu with the items with the touch screen? Can you even do that on the Switch? it would be interesting then, because that would be a good add for the Wii U, playing on TV, and passing for few minutes to offtv play to manage the inventory.

You should play some more Zelda games. Link's Awakening and Majora's Mask, for starters.

I've played them, but those are just two exceptions. Every other Zelda game follows the same story: Ganon spreads his evil across da lands and you, the hero, must banish him and spread peace across Hyrule. It's a very 1980's video game story.

There's also a set number places you must visit and attain special items from yada yada yada.

I can actually think of three more exceptions right off the top of my head.

It isn't just about the beginning and ending though. There's a lot in the between as well as the progression of the journey that you learn about the world and how characters interact.

Speaking of Ganon, I´m very happy that he´s the main antagonist this time. Whenever there was a different baddie I felt the adventure lost some relevance, so having him back in BotW is very nice and pumps up my interest in the story 1000%. I wish he´s somewhat active during the game and doesn´t stay out of screen until the last arc like in TP or SS (if we can count Demise as proto-Ganon).

Yeah that sample isn't very good. It seems she's over acting the "fragile, innocent" part of Zelda. Hope the French VA is better.

Because I always enjoyed the "simple" approach that Zelda has on the story department. There are emotion and symbolic events and I fill the rest of the voids with my interpretation which is biased by gameplay.
Zelda's story isn't deep, full of turns and twists and don't have the dialogues that makes you question life but has a simplicity and sense of wonder that always fascinated me. Maybe it is my nostalgic glasses or my love for the series but going blind as always be rewarding since OoT.

*****language speculation*****

Has anyone tried to change the switch language to one not on the card? Does it default to translated text and english voices?

If that's the case, wouldn't the Japanese version default to japanese with translated text in most languages? I assume the English voices would still be there but maybe to make room for the japanese voices they cut some others. The size difference between switch and wiiU is almost nothing, I doubt they crammed more languages in there.

Do you only watch the first and last 10 minutes of a movie?

Yeah, I went ahead and listened to the voice acting sample Dusk posted. It's about what I expected. It's not good, but it's not going to ruin my experience with the game.
