Microsoft announced Xbox Game Pass subscription service

Horizon is out today, Zelda and Nintendo Hardware is out this week. Microsoft needs a remember us!! And this is a pretty good one.

Fair play seems like a great value add. I don't have an Xbox one but will see what Scorpio has for me.

Also, it's coming out this spring, before E3, so it wouldn't be something that would be announced at E3 anyway.

This could be a slick way to get people using the Windows 10 Store if/when they roll it out on PC.

Agreed, it might be the only way to get a game-related subscription from PC gamers.

If they're trying to get more 3rd-party publishers to make Play Anywhere titles then it seems like this would naturally carry over to PC / Window Store eventually.

I just like to use the "Hide From List" option, so that everytime I look there, I get a complete list of games available for me to download that I'm actually interested in. It's a useful feature, especially once GWG started loading up on the 4 games per month.

I definitely appreciate that feature, but I only really like to use it for demos and betas. The new approach just seems awesome all around to me.

All the sports games are now not in my ready to install list

THANK YOU MICROSOFT! <3

But yeah, as I stated above I absolutely love this. Nice and easy way to separate what I own from what I "rent". Definitely nice if I ever choose to stop subscribing to one service or another and then wonder where X game went.

This is admittedly a pretty interesting deal on MS's part. The bit about being able to buy the games you downloaded at a special discount if you stopped using the subscription is pretty cool too. In theory, it's a far better sight IMO than the "play a NES / SNES VC game for a month" Nintendo's planning to offer with their Switch online subscription and whatever the heck Sony's doing with PS Now (and PS Plus to an extent). Let's see if they can land the execution.

I assume that is part of their aim as well. I think at the very least they can gauge how much interest there is for their console franchises on PC.

Gonna be hard to do it on PC though

Unless..... they get 360 BC aswell.

Even if that happens, Steam might follow suit and the Win10 pass is dead in the water

Aren't they canceling it in everything but ps4 and PC now?

They are? I guess I've missed that. Haven't really been following gaming news as much recently.

At this point, I'm pretty sure that the service isn't used much at all by anybody. And their bad prices don't help.

Think about it. They're not gonna let you keep that many games indefinitely for 10 bucks a month. Let's be a little realistic here. It's a great way to play various games a month at a time. Who knows some might stay around longer. Their strategy could change depending on usage habits. Regardless this is a great rental strategy with potential for increased revenue on older titles that don't bring in much money anymore. It's smart and if I were GameStop I'd be a bit worried.
PS+ and GWG have been doing just what I said. The only difference being that their libraries built up over time. I really doubt this service is going to be cycling between hundreds of new titles every month. It'll likely start with a big base and then swap about a dozen or so titles. and it costs twice as much as a Gold or PS+ subscription a year.

So yeah, I'd say I'm actually being realistic here when comparing it to similar offerings not only from competitors, but MS themselves. If you add a game from this service to your library and download it, you should have access to it as long as you have an active subscription.

And before someone argues PS Now. That is inherently different. You are literally accessing an active PS3 when you're playing a PS Now game. This service is more comparable to PS+'s IGC and XBL's GWG.

Don't a lot of PC gamers play MMOs that require a subscription?

This looks like a neat idea that has a number of interesting use cases. Unfortunately, it's completely unsuited for my needs since I already have far many games to play. I wonder how well this service will sell in the long run.

Sorry, should have specified that for the last year or so since Microsoft said they would unify Xbox and Windows 10 gaming many people said good luck selling Live subs to PC gamers. This isn't Live, but it's a Microsoft gaming-specific subscription PC gamers may actually accept.

GameStop is probably a company I wouldn't want to invest in after this news. No doubt this is a hit for MS, and others follow suit...IMO

Dont kill me.

But is it available for PC windows 10?

Any of the play anywhere games will work with windows 10 as part of this subscription, however there are not a huge number of Play anywhere games out just yet, let alone any in the position to end up in this program

Quick and dirty list from the alpha test:

- A Kingdom for Keflings
- Banjo 1
- Comic Jumper
- Defense Grid 2
- Gears Judgement
- Gears Ultimate
- Halo: Spartan Assault
- Hexic 2
- Jetpac Refuelled
- Kameo
- Max: The Curse Of Brotherhood
- Monday Night Combat
- Ms. Splosion Man
- OF: Dragon Rising
- Perfect Dark Zero
- Sacred 3
- Sam & Max

How many of them are XB1 titles? Three?

This is giving me flashbacks to the BC announcement people are gonna dogpile this list just like they did the BC one. then its going to get better just like BC did

Very cool idea but in execution, I am seeing it being used mainly for older games of the current generation or games that didn't exactly set the sales world on fire.

Great value for a new Xbox owner though.

I am not personally interested in it because I feel like I am balls deep in great games already and I would also be a bit worried that once the rotation of games begins, you would probably not have access to a game that was rotated out anymore. I mean, it happens in streaming services anyway but I feel like it'd be particularly annoying with videogames.

Pretty awesome. This plus a year of gold is pretty awesome for people that buy and sell their games a lot anyway.

Too bad if you're a person with a data cap though

Holy fucking shit. What a game changer. Can't wait to play around with the new alpha update tonight before starting Horizon Zero Dawn.

EA Access was pretty interesting as a games as service program when it launched, the problem was that I'm not fond of EA games in general. At that time I was thinking someone else would follow; i thought Ubisoft would be the next one who'd do something like this, but it was MS who actually did it.

I still think that companies like Sega, Namco or Nintendo would benefit a lot if they make available their old catalog of games in a service like this one + discounts for digital versions of their new games.

Definitely, it's definitely going to be the home for Games with Gold titles before they become games with gold.

Hopefully like games with gold they will extend out the value to new release games and gives trials and further discounts for preorders etc.

Just using this quote as a reminder to everyone that if you pay more than like $39 for a year of Xbox Live you are doing it wrong.

People are seriously paying that? Been a member since 6 years or so and never paid more than $35.

Same with EA ACCESS. Who buys monthly instead of yearly?

You seem to be very sure as you are using "definitely" twice. Do you know more than us?

Because looking at the ALPHA List: there are a Lot of games that were never games with Gold so you are kinda wrong here.

What interests me most is how big the discount is. I often buy games for less than $20 after a year on PSN. If I was paying a subscription fee, I'd probably want to see an even bigger discount to own.

Agreed on BC, without it the service is dead in the water. STEAM is easily the biggest and most powerful storefront for PC gaming. So of course they can undermine the competition but so far they have not reacted to EA or Ubi's offerings. I guess things could be different this time.

Well it's 59 direct from Microsoft and major retailers.

I've never bought a year card without it being some deal on slickdeals for like cdkeys.

As cool as this is, it's a sign that MS are trying to sneak all digital future in through the back door imo. I won't forget E3 2013

So for the price of two games a year you get access to 100? cool. Ill wait to see what the games offered are first but sounds like something that would interest me.

As per usual Nintendo did this first: a rotation of 1 game to play for the month with your subscription.

apples and oranges in this case. Further, ifyou want to say thar came first, sony and MS were doing that before the reveal of the switch, and they let you keep the games after that month too

So don't subscribe for the whole year. Subscribe only when you're gonna play it and you could cut it down to probably half the price.

Sure I could do that, but that's what makes EA Access so great is I don't have to think about it because its such a great value. Also the time required to download games is going to make it a hassle drop the service ever other month, because you'll have a terabyte or more worth of games on your hard drive taking up space. Which you probably don't want to delete because you going to resubscribe again in the future. Just saying a cheaper price like $60/yr would have made it a no brainier. $10/month makes a bill you have to judge ever month its usefulness.

Absolutely. There are always sales/cheap cards around for Live and PS+.

The last 3 years and next 2 are free for me from various Microsoft things

not sure I really like it

1) 120 a year is a hit expensive for a rental service. we don't get to own the games.

2) Why games have to be rotated out? how long does a game last in the list. very shady imo

3) would ms now give out a lesser game for its xbox gold subs? because it now has to serve a higher tier subs?

Ok I see. I think it's going to be a long uphill battle for MS. PC gamers are almost instinctively skeptical of anything MS is trying to do with PC gaming after so many years of unfulfilled promises and half-assed efforts.
