Has anyone tried using the Joycon L's face buttons as a makeshift d-pad in the Neo Geo games?
Does it work at all?

Just grabbed Metal Slug and KOF98. Both seem weirdly slightly dim on TV mode, but great on handheld.

Direction buttons work fine for Metal Slug, but are just passable for KOF. Rolling between them isn't as good as a real dpad, but it works perfectly for platformer controls.

What is awesome is that using a single joycon, the stick works great as a joystick. I never missed a move, if it made clicks it could be the NGP stick. So this little box will be a great mini two player arcade in tabletop!

Interesting! Good to know!
I wonder whether any third party could make a clip on dpad that would sit over the buttons. Could that ever work well? Does it exist on anything else?

Yep, the 3rd Party Pro Controller from Hori (?) has exactly that. No idea how well that works though.

The Switch Pro Controller plays nicely for KoF though. It's a good DPad, even if it's not perfect.

Bought KoF 98 - never really played one, but I wanted a fighter for the system.

I'm really liking the Pro Controller, so I might buy a second one and since SF2 might disappoint, it's nice to have a fallback and some new systems to learn.
It's really nice to see that many options to configure everything to your liking!

Edit: Hoping Samurai Showdown isn't far away, always wanted to try that one too!

I realize it is the longest shot but happen to have an arcade stick you can plug in to the dock and see if by sheer will and magic it works?

I have a SCV PS3 Arcade Stick somewhere, I will try it out tomorrow.

I think its this one - haven't used it much, so no idea how representative that will be.

Mine will be coming in today... sometime.. and I have a PS4 and 360 sticks I can test out as well. Realizing chances are pretty much zero, but who knows what Hamster put in there.

Of the arcade archives that are out now which do you recommend for my switch

Based on your avatar probably one of the fighters? KoF, Waku Waku 7, or World Heroes Perfect?
In that order, for me personally, but I guess it depends what you are after exactly

But Shock Troopers is definitely worth checking out if unfamiliar.

And if you haven't heard of Metal Slug 3 by now then all hope is lost.

Might be a dumb question but do any of these support online?

Almost positive there is no online.

So I got Metal Slug... how do I play tabletop mode with two players? I can't figure out how to use the JoyCons in horizontal mode for this.

I want a refund, you can't use half a joy-con each, wasn't that the entire point of Nintendo Switch?

What a mess, this is a day one release and it's missing the point of the console.

What a waste.

You can use half a joy con each . You go to home then settings, Controllers and sensors then Change controller Grip order.

then both players press the SL and SR buttons

Maybe they are dialing down on PS4 and XBO releases since they confirmed IIRC they intend to release AA games every week on Switch, can they do that on three/four (including PC) systems at once?

How can they be dialing down on Xbox One releases since they just started the service on it. That wouldn't make sense at all.

I'm just guessing if they did mean it when they said they intend to release games on Switch every week.

I'm assuming they were just talking about the Switch. The schedule could be the same for the other consoles, considering they've release 4 games in just two weeks for the Xbox One.

The UX for getting the table top mode to work is incredibly confusing, surely work could have been done there to get it right, rather than manually go into system settings. It's not user friendly at all, but when it works, it works.

The only thing I dislike about the game one all that sorted, is there is no way to have scanlines over a non-filtered output. So, blurry pixels with scanlines or crispy pixels with none are the only real options.

Plays well on those dinky joy-cons :)

Maturity, bitches.
Is Waku Waku 7 the English version if you buy from the EN eShop? The screenshots on the eShop show Japanese characters.

EDIT: I got the answer elsewhere. Been told its multilanguage.

i found it pretty simple to set up controls? Makes sense to do it on a system level.

Agree with your other two points, I'm forced to have no scan line effect because I can't stand that blur. Similar to the NES mini, no idea which blind people make these decisions.

Still holding out, at least for a few days, on any NA news so have not been able to try any of these yet. I figured this impression would be of most interest to this thread though.

Played a chunk of Shovel Knight, as well as the new campaign using the joycon d-pad and... Was totally fine for me. And I am real picky when it comes to a d-pad. Not having a 'center' does make it feel slightly strange. Especially when you do that sort of pivot with your thumb meat maneuver between directions (hopefully you know what I mean) but I was able to adjust very quickly.

I can see problems in execution when it comes to certain 2d games like fighters, but I have not been able to try one yet, so no thoughts there yet.

If you don't want, or lacking the funds, to drop on the pro controller I would suggest at least giving it an honest shot with the joycon. Will see if my tune changes as I get to more demanding parts of the game but so far no problems with execution or feel.

Hopefully, Hamster applies the same level of craft that M2 did with their Sega 3D Classics.

They don't. Arcade Archives are pretty bare-bones when compared to M2 releases. That, and they all cost $8 each, and they rarely ever go on sale, and there are no bundles. Sigh.

There are ways to do it in the game, just have it that you can toggle the mode on the start screen or in the menu, it remaps the controls, functionality is already in the menu so it's not a stretch to change the direction of the analogues and remap everything.

If Hori is doing twin-stick, trackball, and rotary controllers is real, that could be a Big Deal, especially if Hori keeps up with their habit of including an xinput mode for Windows PC use.

The rotary stick bit is interesting as I would assume that means talking Seimitsu into reproducing the LS-30, which a number of classic arcade guy would be very interested in.

The twin stick would end up being a modern clone of the Twin Stick EX I'd imagine.

Trackball in the current Real Arcade Pro case? Yes please.

The key is if doing it console wide you can configure only a single joycon to be player 1, and the other joycon stays powered down. If it was done in game it would still have both powered up because the system would consider it to be in tablet/grip controller mode.

It's super simple, hit home, select controller menu, re-order, hit L+R on one joycon then back to game and rolling. And this way it's the same process for every single game, rather than it changing between games.

Yeah, for Metal Slug and Shovel Knight, I've really liked that dpad. Then got onto KoF and ended up using the stock. It's not great, will have to use the Pro for that.

Last night I downloaded Metal Slug 3 and it plays great but maybe it's just me but the colors seem a bit dull and washed out both in TV and handheld mode, anyone else seeing this? Does adjusting the display settings help?

Edit: Ok, guess I need to remove the screen filter which apparently is on by default.

Anyways, someone who loves Hamster's Arcade Archives series on PS4 I'm really happy about these coming to Switch, now bring on the shmups.

Any titles out now that would benefit from turning the switch screen vertically in TT mode? It's just something I'd like to try out.

I am having a good time with MS3 and might pick up Waku Waku 7.

Hamster, how hard is it to get something so simple right? As nice as it is to have have games like these on the Switch (great for co-op / vs play) I'm really not all that impressed with these ports. I bought KOF 98, Waku Waku 7 and Metal Slug 3.

-Across all three games the colors seem off. Too bright or like the gamma is too high? I'm so used to these games so I can definitely tell they look off both on TV and on the gamepad.

-Metal Slug's rapid fire is a piece of shit. It's so bad that you can't even pick a character at the character select screen without pressing the A button multiple times (Y button on Switch) It makes it to where occasionally you can't shoot leading to endless deaths....as if the game isn't already hard enough. Fix that PLEASE.

-I also noticed that I went to play today on the American version where I had previously saved blood settings to "yes". For some reason the game is using grey blood even with the option toggled. I had to reset the game from the menu (in game) to get it to work.

-Also, why not include console options? I get that this is Arcade Archives, but it's on the ROM. Practice mode in KOF 98 would be lovely.

If Hori is going and making arcade sticks for these games I hope they've gotten in touch with Hamster to let them know that they need to patch these bad ports. It's really too bad because I was willing to buy one almost every single week. This really makes you miss M2.

Unrelated to the ports, but my love affair with the Pro Controller for classic games is over with that d-pad. It's not great as sometimes right registers as up or down and it's too stiff.

I'm so done with Hamster games, I just downloaded Shock Troopers 2 and the entire co-op experience ran at what felt like 12fps, it was awful and I have no way of getting my money back.

Sure, I get games had slow down back in the day but I refuse to believe it's better to release the game in that state than to use the power of new hardware to stabilise the framerate.

If people are so anal pop in an option to run it in classic mode.

Not touching another one of these, been burnt so many times.

Also, is there a scanline mode that isn't blurry?
