US Gamer GT Sport impressions from GDC demo on PS4 Pro

It's a single-unit showcase that uses the same sit-in pod seen at E3 last year that features an adjustable racing seat, plus an in-built Logitech steering wheel and pedals. As I walked up to the unit and checked out the game running on its huge display, I must say I was immediately impressed. From the way that light glistens off the cars’ paintwork through the sun bouncing off the asphalt to the movement of the shadows around the beautifully rendered interior of the car as it races around the track, the game looks incredibly lifelike – and it was absolutely silky, surely-that’s-60-FPS-smooth. It’s a definite step up from what I saw at E3 last year. And that's when I noticed a small sign saying that the game was running on PS4 Pro.

Slipping behind the wheel of the game, I was presented with a choice of six tracks: Brands Hatch GP and Indy, Willow Springs, a Tokyo street circuit, the full Nurburgring Nordschleife course, and a dirt track. Since I haven’t actually driven Gran Turismo Sport on dirt, I chose the latter option, and then selected a Subaru Impreza WRC rally car to drive. After that, it was a case of choosing auto or manual gears, and then switching off the driving assists – and I was ready engage in vehicular battle.

Walking away from the demo, I was extremely impressed with what I experienced. As I’ve already said, the game looks jaw-dropping, with a level of detailing that puts other racers into the shade. It has that signature Gran Turismo hyper-realistic look, feeling exceptionally crisp and clean. But what really worked for me was the handing engine. It just feels so slick, smooth and detailed, with a definition that takes the feel of the game to new heights.

This certainly bodes well for the regular PS4 version. While it obviously won’t feature the same graphical fidelity of the PS4 Pro iteration, the game should play identically – and that means it’ll basically handle in the same way. I’m absolutely dying to get my hands on the game, but it seems that we’ll have to wait a while before that’s possible. When I asked when the game was likely to be released, the Sony representative said, “sometime later this year.”

The graphics are truly absurd, its already plainly apparent from the gameplay videos. Still on the next level. The amount they do with intelligent use of colour and art design and lesser horsepower compared to PC is still shocking. It really shouldn't look this good but it does.

Just bought a PS VR today too, really anticipating this and Ace Combat for VR.

After Persona 5 and Ni No Kuni, all I need to be happy with this year is a solid GT game. Can't wait for more updates from Sony.

This has a VR mode right?

Out of curiosity did the scope of this game change and get bigger I thought this was a smaller GT experience until the inevitable 7?

I haven't been following this too closely, but is the screen tearing from the earlier builds gone? Been a problem since 5.

You know what/ I'm expecting a new "re-reveal" featuring much more content than was previously announced. A year delay is more than enough time to create a more robust single player experience to go alongside the now well known online component...

We don't really know. Sony has said jack shit on this front. They've just been slowly riding the same demo (maybe newer different builds?) with the same tracks from show to show. Other than that they've not said anything on the title.

This game was already gorgeous on PS4.

We all miss the lifelike GT handing... that what made the wait so painful.

Will be interesting to see if it's a newer build than the one they showed at PSX

Sounds like this will be one of, if not their only first party Fall 2017

I'm still hoping for a late summer release. Plus I think Knack 2, and Detroit will be this year, or I imagine so, at least. Plus The Lost Legacy at some point. They'll have some games!

As for GT Sport, I'm always ready for more Gran Turismo. Sounds great to me from this. Sounds like the dirt tracks are more challenging than drift tapping your way through, which has me intrigued.

Not sure if we will ever know.

GDC coverage in general was light this year especially with the Switch Launch to cover.

Plus sites aren't covering GT Sport that much as Sony hasn't exactly been pimping it out.

I have a feeling this game will offer the biggest gap yet between OG PS4 to Pro, like the difference will be huge.

I hope this one will be a good refresh for the series. At first it wasn't really looking like it, but I'm starting to believe.

Curious to see the amount of content that the game will ship with, given the delay that looks to be significant and how Kaz planned to roll out more features like a service at first.

I wonder if Microsoft has a new, mainline Forza game scheduled to go for Scorpio and how that would compare to GT Sport.

I remember my first time playing GT1, the day I bought it near launch, and having my mom turn around and go back to the store because I thought the game was supposed to have 2 disks (hah, those two manual books were thicker than a bowl of oatmeal). I never bought games at launch until GT 2, and now GT PS4 is almost here. After seeing the impressive PS4 games one after another....

GT Sport screenshot thread is going to be a sight to behold!!!

This sounds really cool, I haven't played Gran Turismo since the PS2 games so I'm quite interested in checking this one out.

They'll definitely have Forza 7 ready to go for the Scorpio launch. With that, this, Project CARS II, and Dirt 4 this year (and possibly another F1 game?), it's going to be a great time for racing fans.
