Nioh |OT2| You Can Be My Yojimbo Anytime

Soul matching is expensive, but at least you know what you're getting. Reforging is like gambling for gear in Diablo 2. I spent so much, and I still haven't received the attributes I want, but I need to stop, and just finish up NG+. :) Magic scaling B+ is going to have to do on this weapon.

Yes, reforging is like crack. So many time I've cleared all my cash out chasing the next hit that's going to give me something amazing.

Is Soul Matching even needed on a first playthrough? I rarely keep using the same gear for long.

I am using it to transfer my Change to Attack <Skill> onto every new weapon I start using. I don't use it to raise the levels of stuff 'cause that seems pointless and expensive.

Man, this game was a lot of fun. Platted it in like a week.

Any word on when PvP will be available? That's going to be wild.

Quoting for the new page. Any advice/insight on what to reforge would be very helpful :)

Ok so I've been making build based around dual swords with high skill damage and damage from behind. I also use a price of the Iga set for the ninjutsu renewal after LW as I make liberal use of suppa, catwalking and tiger running scrolls. This is what my primary gear looks like at the moment

I'm wondering what I should focus on reforging on my dual swords and on my armor at this point. Any tips would be appreciated!

If I use the fire from the torches to do good damage, I end up swarmed by annoying blobs.
If you lit all three warding bonfires you shouldn't be even seeing a single blob on the platform. Did you miss one by any chance?

I just got a sword with Paralysis on it that quite out-damages most of my other weapons in base damage. I'm going with it for right now but wondering what pieces of gear would give me that damage bonus when enemies are paralyzed?

I have that goofy bat hat which gives you 40+% additional damage while an enemy is paralyzed, what else is there if anyone knows?

I mean anything now would be just nitpick but I suppose if you're not using ninjutsu or Onmyou you probably don't need UNLIMITED. High attack break and High guard... Do you use them often? I guess it's fine for high attack break but I don't think you'll guard in high stance right?

Alternatively, you might have an easier time getting +dmg from behind. Since they're paralyzed, you can just walk behind them.

Swarmed in the second phase, not the first.

I summoned and beat the boss, and in doing so saw the patterns for the second phase... which aren't too hard as long as one doesn't get knocked off.

My character has base magic stat, with all points into heart and spirit, so with fire talismans, I was doing 250+500 with a strong high attack even on the best opening. Using the torches would get that up to 250+1000, and I could land that twice on its core...

I can chalk it up to just getting seriously unlucky in the second phase a few times in a row, but that'll sour anyone on a Soulslike boss. I also dislike the Old Iron King for the same reason; falling off a platform to your death is just not all that fun a mechanic in a long boss fight.

Aha, yeah, I've already been doing that. I keep forgetting about Refashion. I don't recall if you can refashion those DLC 'gift' items such as the bat hat. The 40+% bonus on paralysis seems really good for now but I feel like a moron wearing that stupid thing.

save your LW for the second phase, only way i could wreck that fucker the first time

Let's talk weapons. I'll just list them in my preferred order and give some thought on them.

The axe is probably my favorite weapon in Nioh. The moveset isn't the most interesting, with a high stance quick attack into heaven and earth combo being so good the you could exclude most everything else, but it feels and is powerful. High stance is the way to go, with enough toughness (200) not to get staggered out of your attacks. The lack of unique axes lead me to respec to swords mid way through my first playthrough, but this thing is tearing up NG+ on my second guy.

Kusarigama is another high stance wonder, with a more useable low stance than axe. The con of this weapon is the slight delay when coming out of a square attack spinfest, but damn does that attack hit hard, and it destroys yoki horns without even trying. Reaper can be amazing, if that's your thing. Being a dex weapon makes going ninjutsu a no brainer, and it allows you to just dump points into dex like crazy and get twice as much benefit from it.

Dual swords has my favorite combo (god of wind 3, yes please) and nice skills (water sword, sign of the cross), but I just find the damage underwhelming. I guess if I were to use skills more the damage would be better, but whatever. All the weapons work in this game, I just prefer harder hitting ones.

Sword is probably the most balanced weapon, and like straight swords in Dark Souls, it makes the game pretty easy. It has all the moves you could need, and the damage is solid, but I find the lack of a god of wind type combo makes it the most boring weapon to use. Quick attacks and a kick is strong, but not that interesting. Absolutely reliable, and fairly dull.

I have the least experience with the spear, and that comes down to not really enjoying the style. It has tons of moves, range, and is strong (when not hitting walls), but I just don't get into spears in games. Loving the halberd in DkS1 is as close as I get.

Anyway, I love this game, I find 4/5 weapons enjoyable, but I do hope they double the number by the time all the DLC is released.

Finally finished the game.

Akechi castle
mission was cool, looked like straight out of a FF although i could have done without that sort of
boss-rush
.
The boss fights were all cool as hell.
The final mission was okay i guess, nothing to write home about.

All in all an amazing game, the battle system is so great sometimes i was literally shaking with adrenaline rush.

My only major complain would be enemy variety, by the 4th region you have seen all of them, except maybe for tengus, and it made the incredibly exciting latter half of the game slighlty more boring.

Aside from that, something that i would have loved to see are more cutscenes depicting William's relationship with the characters (Okatsu, Hanzo, Ieyashu, etc.) and Japan itself. Some small scenes about him getting used to a bew lifestyle would have made wonders in characterization and world building, kinda like gling from wearing briefs to fundoshis.

9/10 from me, one of my fave games of the gen for now.

i'm not giving it a 10 because i can't come to pace with how they introduced japanese swordfighting to William: reading it on a book found on a ship. that wasn't even supposed to be there? Really? That's so stupid ffs

So somehow I have been oblivious to this game until I overheard two people comparing it to onimusha and I loved those games. Is the comparison there? I also didn't realize this was a team ninja game and was a huge ninja gaiden fan. Is there a comparison there?

Finally unlocked divine equipment last night, and finishing up all Dojo missions.

Any tips for Dual Sword/Onmyo builds? Those are probably my favorite weapons, but not sure the best stat distribution and equipment abilities since I'm not really sure how different skills scale, damage-wise

Definitely similar to Ninja Gaiden.

It's extremely similar to Dark Souls combat but it's faster and has a lot of its own unique mechanics added in to make it feel fresh.

Atmospherically and aesthetically it's definitely as close to the original Onimusha as a modern game is getting right now I think. The meat and potatoes here are the combat system and Action over exploration for the most part. That part of it is basically a huge portion of Souls/Bloodborne movement combined with Ninja Gaiden elements and its own ideas.

It's a great game, not without its flaws of course, that reminds me of the PS2 era heavily in terms of spirit if that makes sense.

Why the hell isn't reforge random. Instead, I still haven't found the correct sequence for Dex A after 3 days. I have found everything else.
It is random if you Reforge more than one ability at a time. If you reforge a single ability with the same reforge option, you will always get the same chain of abilities as a result, but someone here tested it (sorry, whoever you are, I totally forgot) and made a post about it, mentioning that the predetermined chain is randomized anew when you reforge two or more slots at once. I think you can also reset it by applying the different type of forging shards at occasions (that is, using Spirit Stone Chunks instead of Divine Shards and vice versa).

I use Suppa, Catwalking and Tiger Running scrolls from Ninjitsu and also Weakness and Carnage talismans from Omnyo do I do actually use both. As far as high stance goes my primary damage dealing Skill is the high stance guard + triangle whirlwind ability so I'm actually guarding in high stance a fair bit of the time in order to pull off the skill.

A meeting on the other Shore in NG+ is the best place to farm + weapons, + gear and + high level accessories. It takes a minute or so to finish and you get 3 mil exp, bunch of gear for upgrades, 50K gold, gear to salvage and high level accessories. On the top of what will drop, you still get a chance for one weapon and 3 chest pieces to be divine as a mission reward and if they are they mostly +4/+5 pieces.

I have been doing this for some time and this place got me everything upgraded to +10 and some of the best accessories in the game. Not to mention tons of xp and gold.

Yes. After 3 days, I knew all the variables needed to restart the sequence results. It just makes it harder because you need to kinda remember what sequence you have already used. Gets impossible after you have done it a dozen, hundreds or etc. number of times using the save scrum method. If it was random, I could just highlight whatever, just reforge and hope. Anyway, I just took Skill A and moved on because the damn thing only gave me Dex C.

finally beat the game, pure GOAT material. i kinda rushed at the end (gathered all kodamas first before doing the final mission) because i want to play horizon but i still want to keep playing it lol

i dont think i have the skill or patience to plat this game but at least ill come close to it or so i would like to believe

Just to be absolutely certain- you can still get smithing text as a visitor right ^^; ?

Because there isn't any unique Onmyou set bonus, I'm thinking of switching to a rifle build before the DLC comes out- have been farming for full Yatagarasu set from the watcher sub mission as a visitor (might as well farm glory at the same time right?)

Also, anyone knows where to get Kogarasumaru dual swords?

Unless I'm super misremembering I want to say yes. I could swear I looted the Nobunaga smithing plans while helping someone in the Demon King revealed.

Cool, good enough for me.

The thing is, it's probably not even the worst part as the boss is easy to get to. The worst part is to craft the set, I would need giant tail bones... and not just the exact amount, I would need some extra just in case RNG screws me over with non-purple gear.... so maybe... 20?

Edit: you know, now that is seeing this thing with divine fragments, would it make more sense to farm for the text AFTER I completed the main story?

If you mean farming the texts in the NG+ missions, then sure. That way, at least you can make more use of the drops you get as a side effect of farming.

99% of the human race cannot beat that mission as easily. You kill them in like 5 hits what the fuck are you using, weapons of mass destruction?

Went back and did the water boss stage again, mainly to find the remaining Kodamas and to try the boss solo again.

The pacing is so bad. I died a couple times from boredom-induced sloppy play. I got it done tho.

Is there a reliable way to bait the beam attack? Sometimes I'd get that multiple times in a single phase and other times it was just throwing boats and slamming arms for minutes straight. Pacing is fine when it doesn't spam the boring attacks only.

So far, I think I 80% love this game, 10% meh and 10% hate it. That 80% sure is really great though.

(Also, I keep forgetting to use the living weapon.)

Oh, divine armor drop only in NG+ Missions? lol I thought just completing the main story unlocks them as drops ^^;

Oh, once you unlock NG+, divine can drop even in Way of the Samurai, it's just very rare, and the level will be scaled to the mission's, never 150.

EDIT: As explained above.

62% close combat damage + 47% damage to yokai + 22% damage from behind + extra damage from behind from mystic art + A+ Agility Damage +10% extra damage at full health + some other minor things can kill any boss in a few hits lol

They drop in the way of samurai but it's low level garbage, only good for divine fragments.

That's fine I'm planning on using them for fragments to craft the Yatagarasu set... or is it better to just loot them is NG+ ?

Not sure what the meta is for end game ^^;

Not sure what the meta is for end game ^^;

The meta is to loot every revenant in NG+ because everyone will be sporting a full set of divine (Red Demon/Kingo) gear.

And periodically, you can find some good stuff amongst all the junk, too, like weapons with innate or inheritable CCD+15%. Revenants are your #1 source for all your crafting needs, so hit up any level guaranteed to have a ton of them lying about.

Man, I did the Invitation from the Warrior of the West mission with Sloth and while massively overlevelled (~45) and I still only managed to beat him using all of the tools at my disposal and having a sliver of health left. Pretty sure I still suck.

I don't think you can bait it, however it took me too long to realise that the slam is actually the easiest opening - once the arms are up in the air run forward and go to town (just beware that he'll follow up pretty quickly with the boat attack)

(Also, I keep forgetting to use the living weapon.)
I don't forget, but I'm always saving it for emergencies and by the time I realise I'm in the middle of an emergency it's too late!

I am really appreciating the elegant simplicity of single katana and there seem to be so many good swords in the game so it's really easy to make a really strong sword. So I'm using that a lot and liking it.

Then there is the chain which I really like and finally found a decent one. I just love the move list and combination of range and up-close attacks.

During my travels I picked up a great pair of dual swords and was really liking that too so these are now on the menu also.

That leaves axe which I've never been interested in and spear which I enjoyed during the demos but have lost my taste for. If it had been a regular staff it would be a different story. Learning the different weapons is like learning a fighting game character; I love it.

So I'm pumping up a lot of skill and any attributes that will allow me to utilise sword, kusarigama and dual sword as required.

All my best laid plans... All thrown out the window in the second last mission.

All because of a Revenant that dropped a Lv 146 Kusanagi no Tsurugi that is 100 damage higher than any of my weapons but with no stat bonus beyond Spirit Damage +A and something to do with purification.

Would you guys pick a pure damage weapon lol ? It's like a whole 100 dmg higher!

At some point the raw damage of a weapon will out-weight any damage from buffs on another weapon. Can't you try something with reforge?

A small thing I noticed yesterday...

Williams yells, grunts and so on are really well done and add a good sense of power to attacks. Whoever did the voice-overs sounds properly labored and angry at once haha

Watched a bit of someone streaming this last night and there's a later spirit guardian called Phoenix, which does exactly what you expect it to do. As someone who doesn't use it a lot that seems like a great option!
