The Passage on FOX? ... I don't know how I feel about that.

I've only read the first book, and that was when it first came out (I was actually going to read all three in the summer). Back then it was going to be a Ridley Scott-produced movie series. It was the first third, the present day stuff, that was incredibly engrossing and fantastic. The other half or two thirds was very good, as well, but felt a little dire, like there wasn't much left worth saving.

But from what I remember, for a network show this is going to be an interesting show to watch. I can't see them doing certain things or going in certain directions. I'll certainly be keeping an eye on this one, both skeptical but still excited!

Do you think it would be given justice if they spent a good chunk of time on the present day stuff? It's going to be difficult finding a balance, especially in the pilot, of the present day storyline and then letting the audience know a lot of the story will be in the future, as well. Getting that time jump, and even multiple time jumps, right will be tough.

Fox has given a pilot order to Behind Enemy Lines, a drama loosely based on the movie franchise of the same name. The project hails from writer Nikki Toscano (Bates Motel), 20th Century Fox TV, whose feature sibling was behind the movie, studio-based Temple Hill as well as Davis Entertainment, which produced the feature.

McG has come on board to direct the pilot under his overall deal at 20th TV. Fox has been looking to pick up pilots with directors already locked in.

There is a clear post-election shift toward more patriotic fare spotlighting America’s heroes in the military. Following the breakout success in the months since the November vote of new USA drama Shooter, about a heroic former Marine, and History’s Navy SEALs series Six, the broadcast network have been looking to tap into themes that appeal to blue-collar, everyday Americans. Fox calls Behind Enemy Lines a “distinctly patriotic series.” It is a military soap thriller wherein a group of U.S. soldiers find themselves trapped behind enemy lines. The multi-perspective narrative “closely follows our soldiers on the ground, and the officers and service men and women on a nearby aircraft carrier, along with intelligence officers in DC as they attempt to bring our heroes home safely and under the radar.”

Written by Dean Georgaris, For God And Country is described as a heart pounding look into the complex world of our bravest military heroes who make personal sacrifices while executing the most challenging and dangerous missions behind enemy lines.

The project fits into the mood of the country and the networks’ ongoing push to get more programs featuring military heroes, which was triggered by the success of American Sniper. As TV nets have been looking for series that reflect and appeal to blue-collar audiences [fucks sake, you mean white. Just fucking say white] post-election, the pilot order for For God & Country comes on the heels of two new drama series about military heroes that have launched successfully since Nov. 8, USA’s Shooter, which already has been renewed for a second season, and History’s Six. The CW Orders Military Drama Pilot ‘Valor’

The CW is the latest network this season to order a drama pilot spotlighting America’s military heroes.

The CW has greenlighted Valor, a serialized military drama/conspiracy thriller written by writer-musician Kyle Jarrow. In Valor, the boundaries between military discipline and human desire are tested on a US Army base that houses an elite unit of helicopter pilots trained to perform clandestine international and domestic missions. The drama unfolds in the present as well as in flashbacks to a failed mission involving one of the first female pilots in the unit, ultimately uncovering layers of personal and government/military secrets, and leading to a season-long plan to rescue a group of MIA soldiers.

Now this is interesting: CBS is ordering a buddy comedy...about two cops...in Detroit...with one being African-American and the other being...Pakistani.

The network has ordered a pilot for the cop comedy Brothered Up, created by Mark Gross (Mike & Molly), TVLine has learned. In it, two cops — one African-American, the other Pakistani — get partnered up to patrol a neighborhood in Detroit. And naturally, they’re polar opposites, personality-wise, with the African-American cop being more guarded and the Pakistani one more open.

Watch it get cancelled because it doesn't gel well with CBS' core demographic of old white people.

HBO has given a 10-episode series order to Succession, its drama pilot directed and executive produced by The Big Short’s Adam McKay.

Written/executive produced by Peep Show co-creator Jesse Armstrong, Succession follows the saga of the Roys, a fictional American global-media family that is not only rich and powerful but also powerfully dysfunctional.

The drama, which explores family loyalty, international business, and the perils of power in the 21st century, comes on the heels of the Redstone family real-life soap opera, which unfolded over the past year and may not be quite done yet. Meanwhile, the Murdoch family is now firmly in control of 21 Century Fox, with Rupert Murdoch’s sons taking on top posts.

Armstrong, who serves as showrunner, is executive producing with Gary Sanchez’s McKay, Ferrell and Messick as well as Frank Rich, who is under a creative consultant deal with HBO, and Ilene S. Landress.

Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong and Kieran Culkin star, along with Sarah Snook, Nicholas Braun, Matthew Macfadyen, Hiam Abbas, Rob Yang, Parker Sawyers and Peter Friedman.

Succession was ordered to pilot alongside drama Mogadishu, Minnesota, executive produced Kathryn Bigelow, and written/directed/executive produced by rapper K’naan Warsame. It has been completed though there is no decision on its fate yet.

More interested to know about Mogadishu, Minnesota. Do we know if the pilot was intended to be contemporary or perhaps a slight period piece? I can see the former being incredibly complicated to pull off, while the latter is workable and would enable the show to avoid creating an alternative political reality. Cuz like, if it were to be contemporary and firmly in our world, you'd immediately be expecting discussion of Trump's executive order and other issues. They would be extremely relevant.

Amazon is teaming up with ”Drive" director Nicolas Winding Refn on new crime thriller, Variety has learned exclusively.

The drama, titled ”Too Old To Die Young," has been greenlit with a straight-to-series order with 10 episodes, according to sources. The show will shoot this fall in Los Angeles.

”Too Old To Die Young" explores the criminal underbelly of Los Angeles. The series is described as being in a similar vein to Refn's Pusher trilogy, which looked at Danish criminals caught up in the drug trade. It explores various characters' existential journeys from being killers to becoming samurai's in the city of angels.

Refn will serve as co-writer with Ed Brubaker, who will be an executive producer. Refn will also direct the series and produce it.

The project is eyeing several big-name stars — Variety sources have mentioned three notable male actors who have been offered roles, though no deals have been made. Should the series lock down one of the names on Refn's wish list, the show would follow Amazon's hot streak of expanding its lineup of original programming with A-listers, including ”Transparent" with Jeffrey Tambor, ”Goliath" with Billy Bob Thornton, plus upcoming projects with Julianne Moore, Robert DeNiro and David O. Russell and a drama series from ”Mad Men" creator Matthew Weiner.

Launching a medical drama is a priority for Fox this season, and this is the second pilot in the genre ordered by the network, joining The Resident. Both hail from 20th TV.

Written by Law & Order: SVU veterans Naer and Dawn DeNoon, The Beast is a life-and-death procedural. Literally. Each week will follow three challenging medical cases. In the end, two of the patients will live, one will die. The series will center on their doctor — with a clinical fear of death — who never stops fighting the odds.

With odds that consistent, the other hospital staff better be placing bets on the outcomes.

‘Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams’ TV Series From Ron Moore, Michael Dinner & Bryan Cranston Picked Up By Amazon

Amazon has picked up Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams (fka Electric Dreams: The World of Philip K. Dick), a 10-epiosde sci-fi anthology series from Ronald D. Moore, Michael Dinner, Bryan Cranston and Sony Pictures TV, sources say.

The show, based on short stories by the award-winning novelist, was previously commissioned by Channel 4 in the U.K. last May. At Amazon, it will join the streaming network’s flagship drama series The Man in the High Castle, which is based on Dick’s award-winning novel.

Cranston is set to star in one episode of the series, which he is executive producing alongside Moore and Dinner, who are writing.

Each episode of Electric Dreams will be standalone based on Dick’s shorts stories as adapted by a writer’s room made up of both British and American writers. Joining Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Outlander) and Dinner (Justified) as writers are Tony Grisoni (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas), Jack Thorne (Harry Potter & The Cursed Child), Matthew Graham (Dr. Who), David Farr (The Night Manager), Dee Rees (Bessie) and Travis Beacham (Pacific Rim).

It’s official — Hulu has given a 10-episode order to Castle Rock, a psychological-horror drama series from J.J. Abrams and Stephen King. The streaming service also has released more details about the show, whose production is set to begin this year.

As previously announced, the series, which hails from Abrams’ Bad Robot and Warner Bros TV where the company is under a deal, is based on world created by King in his works. It is named after Castle Rock, the fictional town in King’s native Maine that is featured prominently in a number of his novels, novellas, and short stories, including Cujo, The Dark Half, IT and Needful Things, novella The Body and short stories Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption.

Per Hulu and the producers: A psychological-horror series set in the Stephen King multiverse, Castle Rock combines the mythological scale and intimate character storytelling of King’s best-loved works, weaving an epic saga of darkness and light, played out on a few square miles of Maine woodland. Showtime Networks has ordered Melrose, a five-part limited series toplined and executive produced by Sherlock and Doctor Strange star Benedict Cumberbatch.

The project, a co-production between Showtime and Sky Atlantic, is based on the Patrick Melrose series of semi-autobiographical novels written by Edward St. Aubyn. David Nicholls (Far From the Madding Crowd), who called Cumberbatch “the perfect Patrick Melrose,” is writing all five episodes of the TV adaptation. Search is underway for a director.

Melrose skewers the upper class as it tracks the protagonist’s harrowing odyssey from a deeply traumatic childhood through adult substance abuse and, ultimately, toward recovery. Cumberbatch’s Patrick Melrose is an aristocratic and outrageously funny playboy who struggles to overcome the damage inflicted by a horribly abusive father and the mother who tacitly condoned the behavior. Each episode will follow one of the five novels, and take place over the course of a few intense days in the life of the protagonist. The settings range from the South of France in the 1960s to New York in the 1980s and Britain in the early 2000.

The thing that holds them together is that all of the stories involve people who believe themselves to be descendants of the Romanov [family, the last imperial dynasty to rule Russia. The mystery surrounding the family dates back to 1918, when revolutionaries brutally murdered the czar and several members of his family. The remains of one of his daughters and his only son were never found, and in the years since people around the world have claimed to be a Romanov survivor.] And that’s the title of the show, The Romanoffs. [Weiner's spelling choice reflects the pronunciation as well as the way the family name was commonly spelled until recently.]

What inspired the choice?

When I was writing my novel [the dark contemporary fable Heather, The Totality, will be published this fall] I started collecting these stories — we’re coming up with new one, too — but I loved the idea both as a viewer and as a writer of being able to tell a story that really commits. I don’t mean that we didn’t do that on Mad Men or that you don’t do that on continuing series but when the characters are not coming back the next week you have a chance to tell it in a different way — to resolve it. Black Mirror is a different genre, but if you enjoy the idea of seeing a new story every week, that will be part of it. And the reason that I picked the Romanovs is that in an era where we have social media and so much theoretical connection to each other it really seems like we’re further apart than ever. And I love this idea that these characters believe themselves to be, whether they are or not, descendants of this last autocratic family who are part of one of the great true crime stories of all time. I also love that it’s the chance to talk about nature v nurture, what they have in common and what is left of a grand heritage.

Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s MRC Series ‘The One Percent’ No Longer At Starz, Moves Forward With Greg Kinnear As New Lead

The One Percent, MRC’s drama series from Oscar-winning filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu, is on the move. The project, which originally was picked up by Starz in summer 2014 with a 10-episode straight-to-series order, is now in turnaround after several production start delays led to the pay cable network pulling out as U.S. broadcaster.

MRC, which previously worked with Iñárritu on the Oscar-nominated feature Babel, remains fully committed to the series, which will star Greg Kinnear and Hilary Swank. Swank had been attached from the get-go, Kinnear was recently cast as the male lead, replacing Ed Helms who was originally set to play the role. MRC will look for a new distributor.

According to Variety, the network has ordered 10 episodes of a weekly, half-hour late night series starring Jefferies, which was ordered to pilot last year. The show will “take on culture and politics” and “show Jeffries traveling around the world to take on the top issues and most controversial stories of the week.” Jason Reich (Daily Show, Full Frontal) will serve as head writer and co-executive producer on the show, which is slated to debut sometime this summer.

‘The Age Of Miracles’ Series Adaptation From Shawn Levy In Works At AMC

AMC has acquired TV rights to Karen Thompson Walker’s bestselling novel The Age Of Miracles, which will be developed as a series produced by Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps (Netflix’s Stranger Things).

Sinead Daly (The Get Down) is aboard to write the script.

Published by Random House in 2012, The Age Of Miracles follows a Southern California teen as she and her family awake to discover that the rotation of the Earth has suddenly and exponentially begun to slow. As the days and nights grow longer and longer, gravity is affected, and people start falling sick to a mysterious new illness. The girl is also forced to cope with the normal disasters of everyday life when her parent’s marriage falls apart and she struggles with lost friends and first love.

HBO & BBC Team For Sally Wainwright Drama Series About Anne Lister

HBO and BBC One have partnered for Shibden Hall, an eight-episode drama series from BAFTA-winning writer Sally Wainwright (To Walk Invisible, Happy Valley). The series is a Lookout Point production for the BBC and co-produced with HBO.

Set in West Yorkshire in 1832, Shibden Hall tells the epic story of the remarkable landowner, Anne Lister. Returning after years of exotic travel and social climbing, Anne determines to transform the fate of her faded ancestral home, Shibden Hall, in Halifax.

To do this, she must re-open her coal mines and marry well. But the charismatic, single-minded, swashbuckling Anne Lister – who walked like a man, dressed head-to-foot in black, and charmed her way into high society – has no intention of marrying a man. True to her own nature, she plans to marry a woman.

This is amazing. Been wanting someone to tackle Anne Lister for a while now and Sally Wainwright is definitely up for the task.

- ‘The Night Manager’s’ David Farr Developing ‘Hanna’ TV Series With NBCUni International Studios

David Farr, the writer behind the hit BBC/AMC show The Night Manager, is developing a TV version of offbeat assassin pic Hanna with NBCUniversal International Studios.

It’s familiar territory for Farr, who co-wrote the 2011 Saoirse Ronan starrer with Seth Lochhead for Universal’s Focus Features. The film, which earned $63.8M worldwide and $40.3M domestically, was directed by Joe Wright and saw Ronan play the badass daughter of an ex-government operative who turned into a killing machine and then used all of her assassin skills to try to reunite with her Dad. Eric Bana and Cate Blanchett also starred.

Farr is also writing BBC historical epic Troy: Fall of a City, a limited series set around the events of the Trojan War and the love affair between Paris and Helen of Troy. Netflix announced last week that it had boarded the big-budget project as a co-producer. Farr also co-wrote The Man With The Iron Heart, starring Rosamund Pike, Mia Wasikowska and Jack O’Connell, which is currently in post, and is one of the writers on AMC/BBC co-pro McMafia, a drama series set in the international world of organized crime. He made his directorial feature debut in 2015 with Clémence Poésy drama The Ones Below.

The Donald Trump miniseries will be based on Mark Halperin and John Heilemann’s upcoming third installment of their “Game Change” series, which will be published by Penguin Press.

Taran Killam-Fronted Comedy Mating Not Moving Forward at Showtime

Taran Killam‘s relationship comedy Mating won’t be going the distance at Showtime.

The cabler has opted not to move forward with the Jason Katims-produced project, which found the Saturday Night Live alum playing a young divorcé who found himself completely unprepared for the brave new, frank and fluid world of dating and hooking up.

Mating was designed as an anthology series, with each season focusing on a different protagonist’s journey through modern dating and relationships. TVLine has learned that Universal TV, the studio behind the project, is currently looking for a new home for Mating.

- Ryan Murphy Sets His Next TV Series: 1980s New York Drama ‘Pose’ At FX

Ryan Murphy helped put FX on the original drama series map with Nip/Tuck. He then reinvigorated the anthology series genre, turning FX into a limited series powerhouse with American Horror Story, American Crime Story and Feud. Now Murphy is returning to the ongoing cable drama series format with FX’s Pose, which he will produce with Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson. It is slated for a 2018 premiere.

Written by Murphy, frequent collaborator Brad Falchuk and Stephen Canals, an up-and-coming writer discovered by Murphy, Pose has gotten the go-ahead from the network for an October production start in New York, with Murphy directing the first episode as he does on all of his series.

Set in 1986, Pose examines the juxtaposition of several segments of life and society in New York City: the emergence of the luxury Trump-era universe, the downtown social and literary scene and the ball culture world.

Murphy has begun casting for a show, which is expected to feature largely new and unknown performers.

On Pose, Murphy also is re-teaming with American Crime Story producers Jacobson and Simpson, who have an overall deal at FX Prods. The duo will produce with Murphy, Falchuk and Canals. Sherry Marsh will also serve as a producer on the project, a co-production between FX Prods. and Fox21 TV Studios, the cable arm of 20th Century Fox TV where Murphy is based.

Murphy is in various stages of production on the third and second installments of American Crime Story; Katrina and Versace; he’s pepping the seventh season of American Horror Story and just announced that the second Feud installment will tackle Princess Charles and Diana. The first installment of American Crime Story, People v. O.J. Simpson, was a runaway ratings and critical success, winning nine Emmy Awards, including best limited series.
