Mass Effect Andromeda Graphical Downgrade

This is so jarring and creepy. Different lighting in these two shots and the eyes resemble stickers.

Ok, I'm not saying the facial animation is stellar in Horizon (though I think the robots animate nicely) but something like this
tumblr_omeewcGvw91rpd9dfo2_500.gif

Maybe it's the different camera work but I don't see the dead of a robot, it feels decent to me. And yes to reply to Heckler 456 since they game is much bigger, with a bigger cast I don't expect the same variety of unique faces or even V.A for that matter.

didn't said it but i was thinking only of dialog animations (cutscenes animations are better)
and this guy is the best so far
it's a shame previsible scenario make him have previsible fate

Is that custom dad ryder based on the son here? At least the generation of the dad is pretty good with the face choices you've made. Do we have any footage of the sibling?

As I noted we don't know what percentage of that is specifically animated for cutscenes and conversation trees that focus in on the faces. There is a great deal of in-world conversation that happens in bioware games, which they do not animate with care, nor would they need to, on account of the player being focused on other things.

However, I don't think it is much to ask for them to take more care in the parts where they focus in on the heads.

Well, if you don't even want to entertain the notion that a game that is at least twice as long, with provably twice as many characters, and the amount of direct dialogue being equal to two of its three prequels, then I don't know why I'm having this conversation here with you. I think it's pretty evident that it's safe to assume that they had significantly more animation to do than The Witcher 3, which was the entire point.

Now can you imagine how many more lines they had to animate for Andromeda than they did for The Witcher 3? I'm sure it won't have increased linearly, but given that the cast size has doubled when compared to Mass Effect 3, I'm sure it'll be significantly bigger. My guess would be around Dragon Age Origins size, which has a script size of 740.000 words. .

Well, regarding The Witcher 3; they used an algorithm as a base, and fine-tuned it by hand. And I imagine that the same goes for games like ME:A but also Horizon. The thing with Bioware is that their animation rig/setup in ME:A seems to be severly lacking (or at least, they made some weird choices) compared to other recent games. It wouldnt surprise me if they have like, one specific rig for dialogues for every type of character (including alien species); maybe thats why this looks so incredibly weird, because the rig also has to work with a Krogan character for example. /assumptions

I just can't believe that someone at Bioware saw this and thought "this looks great!"

Yeah I don't wanna post other gifs of different other characters talking cause people will complain of spoilers and well it's an Andromeda thread still but I agree with you, the uncanney valley is strong in Horizon but somehow I don't even get that from Andromeda.

They just look like goofballs with doll eyes for the most part. OG daddy Ryder is alright though so it's strange that the other characters couldn't be held to the same standard. Liam is alright too.
And yeah Rost was so good

Can PC mods fix the faces?

There were some hair mods here and there for Inquisition but I don't think you'll see face mods. It's a shame that this engine is not moddable. Fallout 4 mods came made things bearable.

Not really. Because it clearly looks like most facial animations are algorithmically generated. CDPR also used algorithms to generate a baseline and then went and idividually adjusted each cutscene by hand to improve the quality.

Here, all I'm asking is for Bioware to do the same for their main cutscenes. They're not even doing that. So in volume, I'll concede the point, but in terms of unique animation work, I'll certainly not.

What is it with Bioware and making all the women resemble goblins? Like there's something really goofy going on.

Edit: Seems the men didn't fare any better

If the scope of the game forces development to mitigate quality below what might be considered par for the industry at time of release then that scope should be limited.

Unless the scope itself is part of the actual product (minecraft) then there is little reason to sacrifice quality for just more of the same. If witcher 3 was 10 times its size but 1/10th the quality no one would care about it. If there were 100s of dungeons in Zelda OOC but a fraction of the design quality it would make it a worse game, not a game of equal value.

The scope of a game isn't an excuse, because the scope is something they themselves control. If the scope limited the quality of the animations, then a consumer is allowed to critique the scope by way of animation quality.

God damnit GAF. All i'm seeing when i watch the characters now is the freaky eyes and it's your fault lol. If this ruins the game next week for me i'm gonna demand $60 from EvilLore.

Also, I do think that the art style is partially responsible for what we're seeing. Bioware seem to be going for a more Naughty Dog-esque 'styled realism'. Naughty Dog uses it to negate the whole 'uncanny valley' issue, but somehow Bioware to a wrong turn somewhere.

lol, Wildlands characters look like shit and the lipsync is horrid, I'm still enjoying the game (with a friend), I'm sure it will be same here too unlike the game fails terribly in gameplay & story departments.

I have seen two negative previews so far so I'm keen to try it myself.

They should definitely do something about the eyes and facial animations lol. I will just have to spend an hour or two trying to make my Ryder as attractive as possible to make up for it.

I think graphic is still good.
What I think is terrible it's the new artistic direction...they ruined Asari, also humans... it's really creepy... every living being... :\

Bioware didn't just walk down a wrong path accidentally in to uncanny valley, they fucking bungie jumped in without the rope being held in place.

I find all the humanoid characters extremely off-putting when it comes to the model/animation quality (not just talking about faces). They're all rather creepy. They all seem to have a knack for a real shit-eating grin too.

Glad I'm still going through Horizon Zero Dawn. Game is gorgeous.

This on the other hand...Yikes...those animations are pretty rough.

The reveal was an in-engine trailer using game assets and post processing effects

Super disingenuous to compare it to actual gameplay, especially when the lighting on the eyes is completely changed

Didn't someone link to a Bioware dev claiming it was gameplay or something?

Looks like Mass Effect faces alright. Gameplay looks great though and IMO the game is a nice looking game with varied areas that have been shown. Definitely a day 1 once it runs fine.

It would be ok if they didnt claim it was representative of gameplay.

I mean, I would have been ok if they kept the quality like that only for conversations at least.

Forget the look they are going for, it's the execution that has me laughing. I couldn't care less if the game was full of average looking faces, rather than everyone looking like a model, but the mix of the strange features, lip sync puffy lips, and unrealistic facial animation is rather off-putting. Looking plain is fine, but the eyes are so strange, I can't help but picture that faceless Assassin's Creed gif.
