Anyone else dislikes Nintendo's current love for washed out color schemes?

In case you missed it:
-OP doesn't like Nintendo
-OP hasn't even played the game
-OP has a god awful aesthetic sensibility where he thinks increasing contrast and crushing blacks is good idea.
-OP makes thread where he posts cherry picked screenshots from Google search one of which is a screencap from a Youtube video.
-OP gets super defensive when called out on any of this saying "he knows the game"
-Somehow the thread is still up despite the OP spreading misinformation and becoming more Nintendo bashing troll bait.

Know what?, i'm gonna call you out. I can't call reply to all posters whose cats i inadvertently ran over so sorry, but you kind of cover all the bases with all of your bulletpoints.

-My first console ever was a Nintendo and i have owned every single home console minus the Wii U and Switch, the Wii U i'll buy before they dissapear and i'll get the Switch after they fix all the HW kinks.

-No i haven't played the game, but the game does not come with eyes. My eyes can see pretty fine, not only that. Several other posters have said the same so... come again?

-Again, not alone in my sentiment including *shocker* members who own the game!

-Already said that i see the same issue in most of the pictures posted on this thread, there are a few that look okey but they're not the majority.

-I don't get offended, i just don't see the reason why you, jpop and several others keep trying to "lol" my arguments away while dismissing the other users who have said they see the same thing.

-I am not spreading any misinformation, ignore my examples if you want. Use the ones posted by several other members, and besides people have eyes and they can make their own opinion. I don't see the whole "Nintendo bashing troll bait" you speak of because there isn't one, you (among others) seem to be hurt somehow by my (and other members) opinion.

They've played the game, you haven't.

Their arguments have veracity, yours don't.

You can't claim BoTW is washed out when you haven't actually played the game. You've formed your opinion and have found evidence to back it up. It's simple confirmation bias.

I can go through your post history selectively quote you and completely misinterpret the essence of who you are. Does that mean my opinion has veracity? No it doesn't, it means I'm full of shit.

Same goes for you.

Okey, you know the world is round right?... why?, well astronauts have seen it from the moon and whatnot and you have seen pictures and videos. But wait!!!... you haven't seen it in person from orbit, as such... your opinion is invalid, the astronauts surely is, but yours is... well it's not.

EDIT: Sorry, double post.

How do you know dinosaurs existed? YOU WEREN'T THERE! Fossils are fake and planted there as red herrings. YOU'RE NOT ALLOWED TO FORM AN OPINION ON SOMETHING UNLESS YOU EXPERIENCED IT /s

I think mario is a good example of Nintendo not using washed out colors...I think that BOTW is the only one that just is.

Though I feel like BOTW would be more appealing visually with that color set tbh and less of that overwhelming yellow filter

That's an awful comparison. Dinosaurs existing is a widely accepted fact in the scientific community. OP is unironically doing this.

No i am not, i have made valid arguments (that other members have agreed with and even provided their own screens, people who own the game if you wish to ignore my opinion). Some people agree and others don't like with most everything. You however seem to be hell bent on making me look like a troll for whatever odd reason.

I don't like the haze at all and is one of my primary gripes with BoTW. I liked the original teaser with the vibrant colours and was disappointed when I saw the faded colours later. I get that Nintendo is aiming at a specific artstyle, but they cranked up the haze too much IMO. The region right around the character shouldn't be as hazy as a few hundred meters away if the haze is intended to be atmospheric scattering. Also, if they were going for a Ghibli artstyle, the colours are too light compared to Ghibli art IMO.

Remove the excessive haze, and you can see the Ghibli inspirations. I tried editing many screenshots, and I think this one best shows the difference the excess haze makes.

This one has an overcast sky so it looks a bit gloomy.

Here's another edit for "popping" colours.

Are you me?

This is exactly what I wanted snd as you said, what I expected after the initial announcement.

Anyway thats a matter of taste though.

Regarding the two Playstation screenshots in OP the looks hideous, Im tired of the rudiculous contrast in everything.

Edit:
But come on guys, attacking the OP for not gaving played the game? Are you saying that we dont discuss games before relesse in NeoGAF?

I think the colors in BOTW is muted (playing on the WiiU) version. To me, this adds to the aesthetics of the game of a world after it has been ravaged and its main civilization devastated, kind of a return to a new world feel. I absolutely love it. I don't agree with you about color usage in other Nintendo IPs. I think games like 3D Land and Kart 8 are vibrant and colorful. I think Odyssey looks great as well.

BotW looks perfect. In fact it's one of the best looking games I've ever played art-direction wise. The way they have handcrafted all the lighting scenarios and managed to keep them dynamic is mind blowing.

What do you prefer? This or those gray colors of most aaa games? I thinks thats a bigger issue. I can understand that you say it about Mario switch but all the rest... Let's take mario kart as example or zelda with his artistic style or xenoblade, fire embled, mario sports, they don't have this. You're using one game with some parts in it that has that different colors. But the rest look the same like the mostly use. But maybe something different is fine.

So yes I think this topic could be closed.

I wonder how people can even comment on gameplay reveal trailers, they should be banned because they haven't played the game /s

This isn't the PS3/360 era were AAA titles were (mostly) devoid of color. Overwatch, Horizon, Sunset Overdrive say hi. I do prefer colorful games of course, i also like good contrasting ones.

The thing is a few users agree with you and provided screenshoots while a lot more users also provided screenshoots and argued that your opinion is wrong. What do you make of that?

Do you think people who provide screenshots that prove your OP title wrong are lying?

When we look at the game as a whole only a few scenes look washed out and lots of them look vibrant and colorful. You can make anything look bad if you cherry pick for the sake of your argument.

So what I am trying to ask is that, would you say the screenshoots that have rich, powerful colors are irrelevant to the discussion?

This and also dark souls has moments that are the same. Its better to complain why many none nintendo games have no colors.

I don't mean to be rude, but i have already replied and gave my opinion on them more than once on this thread... but okey. Majority still look like they could use more contrast and some do look good, the ones that look good however are the minority.

Also (and not just directed to you) if you're going to reply to me and argue have the decency of checking my previous posts on this very thread because more likely than not, i already answered your question. If not then go ahead.

OP is trying to establish a trend that is not there. C´mon, trying to give the impression Nintendo´s games are washed and need more color is as twisted as it can get. This is Nintendo, the company that constantly gets called out for making colorful games for little kids and that needs to make more mature and darker games. This makes me think OP has some kind of bias against Nintendo for whatever reason as I find it really hard to believe someone can make this type of claim while goodwillingly ignoring +30 years of output that go totally against it.

Got to love the people that will fuck up the settings on their TV because a game doesn't look like they want it to despite it being a choice of the developers.

BGBW

Maturity, bitches.

the game...the game

the game...the game...the game!

That's nice.

So we get no one can change your mind about BotW. But that's still one example out of hundreds.

Where are the examples from the rest of Nintendo's output that this apparent "issue" affects?

You clearly claimed this was widespread and yet for six pages this thread has only focused on one title.

at times "the haze" just comes off as atmospheric perspective, but other times it does seem like they chose kind of a desaturated palette for whatever reason. Perhaps its part of how the game is rendered to lower detail.

BotW might seem washed out at times but there's always a massive dynamic range on screen and even distance cliffs etc won't be crushed in the shadow details.

I am fine with it, coming from photo editing for real world images this is how things look when they aren't photoshopped to hell.

That same aesthetic was also a bit much in The Last Guardian. Not a fan, and is one of the worst pairings with framerate drops -- it does not mask them well.

I love BOTW but it really does look like there is a grey sheen to everything, especially outdoors. Pre-release I attributed this washed out look to people using incorrect rgb settings but I've been unable to fix it on my Switch. It seems to be intentional, and that's really unfortunate. I still think the game looks great for the most part but I think it would look a lot better without the 'smog'.

Yeah it's one of the best looking games I've ever played. It looks alright in screenshots but in motion it's something else.

Most capture footage of Switch games seems to have come from improper calibration of capture device-console settings.

You have to actually change the settings to full range RGB, along with the capture card. Game looks great, I just wish it didn't rain so much lol.

Are you trying to replicate the the switch's gigantic bezels with that setup?
I set the Switch display at 90% on my 65' 4K TV as I play 1,5 meter away from my TV. It also looks sharper this way.

When I play from my couch I bring it back to 100%:

I agree with you, when you play it's really someting else.

And this thread doesn't make sense.
Taking one game to make a generalization is pretty silly, or the title is just wrong.

Yeah, some areas look washed out but others are the most fantastic shades of green. I think the images banded around just look that way because of either the weather or the zone, the game looks fine and most of those modified images or TV tweaks people have shown off have such a loss of detail that its not worth doing.

Game looks great, those moments when everything is a brilliant green are lovely moments. I dunno, maybe my TV is different compared to most? Just seems like an odd complaint.

Fuck, that first picture spoiled something for me.

Knew it was probably in the game, but I've been trying to avoid as much as I can until my Switch arrived here in Korea.

Oh well.

If it's Link's signature green hat, it's actually an Amiibo hat I got from 8-bit Link. This one isn't really a spoiler :p

Wait, this dude hasn't even played the game? lmao

The weather system in this game is amazing and not everything is going to be perfectly crystal clear every day. That's the point. As someone who does photography as a hobby, I can't stand when people try to clean something up and crush the blacks so hard that the image loses quality to it.

That's no different here. No thank you, I'd prefer not to have Zelda look like an HDR edited photo on the extreme when that wasn't what the intended vision was. I don't need Breath of the Wild: Trey Ratcliff edition.

Not related to colors at all, but I love how the wind blows grass, flags, clothes, fire, little dust clouds, hair, pretty much everything you would expect. And is all dynamic, if the wind direction changes, gets more intense, etc. I don't think ive ever seen a game with this much detail in this regard

Indeed, that looks hideous. lol

The biggest factors are the time of day and the weather conditions, which constantly change.

That rgb setting completely change the game
And this of course!

One issue I have though is when I set both my TV to Full RGB and the Switch I get a washed out picture.
I need to set my Switch to Limited and my TV to Auto for it to work properly.
No other system does this on my Panasonic Plasma though, which is rather weird. :-/

I feel like this thread is a prime example as to why the Xbox has such a weird contrast setting, that colour pop everyone seems to love.

Should the game on your TV look like how it does in handheld mode? Because handheld mode has bolder colors and higher contrast, alleviating some of the washed out look the game has on your big screen.
