How do you keep the goofy ass text style on the front of the book but turn it from a standard high school notebook into some yellowed journal? That is literally the exact opposite of how I would have made those two decisions. It's actually way more stylish and weird for this demonic death book to look like a mundane object from our world

Why do people always consider Death Note edgy? It was NEVER presented that way. It was fans who took Light as being anything, but a psychopath, but the author very much didn't try and paint him as anything, but. It was never needlessly violent or dark either, and aside from some of the choices made by the anime, I wouldn't really consider it edgy.

It's the aesthetic. Nothing in Death Note would be out of place in a Hot Topic. Just needed a Panic at the Disco/AFI/etc.. soundtrack and it would've been a perfect mid-2000s emo show.

I like it ... sounds like a reboot in the same universe, not the same story.

If you are going to adapt changing stuff than change as much as you want.

I guess they thought it would come off as lazy?

I didn't even know this was happening. Even if this is absolutely terrible, they sure nailed the atmosphere. At least that looks great.

I'm not yet convinced Death Note can be done justice/faithfully as a standalone movie, its just this whole crazy thing that just keeps getting bigger.

It would make a great mini series though or something that just runs for about three seasons.

Will watch the hell out of this and hope for the best.

I love Pokken!
Really should have been done years ago with Zac Efron as lead.

I could see it. And Ezra Miller as L would be a better casting.

I like Ryuk already, which is not surprising.(Willem, great choice)
still have high hopes for L.
what was that ferris wheel Michael Bay shit though at the end?

God, I hope they don't turn Light into a bullied social outcast that just needs a love interest to mend his poor misunderstood soul.

They did such a good job of making Light absolutely disgusting in the manga/anime in his own righteousness. He had no tragic past or secret, he just thought he could play God.

I can't really think of an anime sociopath thats ever struck an emotional chord with me like he did. He was perfect evil law.

Only show I could ever remember watching the finale of and actually being nervous as shit that the wrong guy was going to win.

Keeping Ryuk as a creepy shadow seems like a great idea to me. Show him just at the very end

Ryuk doesn't translate well to live action

I'm still weary about this. The teaser seems to have kept true to the spirit, but who knows what the final film will look like.

I can already tell that Dafoe will carry this.

I came in here expecting to see Zac Efron as the lead and couldn't understand why I had that image in my head. Then I saw that Efron and Light image that used to be posted all the time many years ago and realized that it was ingrained deep in my brain.

TBH it doesn't look bad. I'm looking forward to it. I have a feeling this will turn out decent.

Offtopic, but I know this was another anime/manga adaptation were they would't even consider an Asian for the lead roles.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
They should have updated this for modern times and Western audiences. It should be a smart phone or tablet that has twitter with a special profile. Whenever you tweet someones name they end up dying.

Boooo I liked the dumb look of this waaaaay more than i thought I would. I think in part because it looks kinda bad but knows it? That shot with the cheerleaders really clues you in on the tone i think this is going to take ie hopefully more campy.

Casting and everything looked like boring shit in that short trailer.

Buuuut I am hopeful because it's Death Note and Netflix should know to not fuck this one up. Hopefuly.

I never understood why someone would touch the notebook, see the shinigami, and still voluntarily choose to turn into nothingness when they die.

It's just a trick to scare people off. In Death Note, all humans go to nothingness anyway.

I'd pick it. It's better than Hell.

Wouldn't that be obvious though if you search the persons name on Twitter?

It's a magic killer tablet/twitter handle. Does it matter? Would anyone even put two and two together considering the millions and millions of twitter profiles out there?

No offense but oh my god that's such a bad idea

Like the Death Note as a notebook was any less silly? The concept is silly, its how you present it.

I feel like Death Note is a really weird source to base a single film off of. I moved past the manga/anime pretty quickly after my early teens, so I never actually saw the movies, but I heard the Japanese live action films weren't really that great either. I'd imagine there's too much world building to be done sufficiently in about 120 minutes. I think a (mini)series would probably be better; hell, the god-damn tennis scene needs its own episode.

Maybe I'm wrong, I guess we'll find out in August.
